Anyone here smoke a pipe?

I guess it bothers me that after that many years, I still reach for that shirt pocket after a good meal and with a cup of coffee. It was hard for me to quit but I was worried about the second hand smoke with three youngsters in the house. To each his own but I hate to see anyone go through what I did to quit. Not trying to interfere in others business.:)

JIM, I have to step in and agree with you here..I just recently quit Nicotine, after years of smoking and dipping:barf: It was early morning, I was about to leave for work..and I just quit...cold turkey. I had just looked in on my sleeping daughter and pregnant wife. I can imagine what it would be like for my kids to loose me..as I lost my father, and grandmother, and great aunt to lung cancer.
I can say that holding a loved ones hand as they die, is not fun..and I have seen lots of ways to die..CANCER is not one of the GOOD ones. Seeing my father..that everyone refered to as "BIG Gene" (I'm "little Gene", no kidding) shrivel up to about 135 pounds was very tough to go through. And my wonderful grandmother, the hub of the family..had quit smoking in the early 80's..only to still die a painful death of cancer 25 years later.
I can only hope and pray that I didnt kill myself in this manner.
I hate to preach, or get on a soap box..but we sit here, on this forum, and split hairs all the time about this or that , that can kill us....and sometimes we argue over the smallest detail. I can tell you..if you smoke, you are gonna die of cancer....period. Maybe your not scared of dying, but think of your loved ones...its what worked for me.

from the moment i saw this thread I've been searching for a pipe I found in my grand dad's stuff after he passed away... this is driving me crazy @_@

I smoke a pipe too. It started out as an occasional intermittent relaxing type deal, and then I got myself hooked. Still enjoy it too much to quit, but lately I've been having a lot of thoughts just like the sentiments expressed by gunknifenut. So if you're not already addicted to nicotine guys, don't put yourself in a position to be. Sure, enjoy the occasional smoke to relax, but just make sure it stays that way- occasional.

With that out of the way, lately I smoke a semi churchwarden the most. It has a small bowl to allow a quicker smoke with the finer cut tobacco I've been smoking. Have about a dozen different pipes though, and hopefully soon I'll be making a pipe tomahawk. :) Used to have a King's Cross 3/4 bent Featherlight that I really loved. It's small size allowed for easy carry and a hands-free smoke. Then I broke the stem.

Whatever you use, just be sure to clean the stem and condenser/filter regularly.

those look cool langston.... this thread is making me want a pipe even more now.. i think i might have to go and pick one up soon...:o

My buddy has always wanted one of those looonnng churchwardens that you see Gandolf smoking in the Lord of The Rings movies. His criteria is he wants to be able to hold the bowl and rest is hand on his knee LOL.. What's that like 24" or so mouth to knee?

Do they make such a thing? I would think it would be very hard to pull the smoke through that much pipe.

Ha, a quick search and I found one http://www.lotrfanshop.com/lotrshop/pipes/whitewizardpipe.asp?ReturnPage=/lotrshop/pipes.asp

I guess the question is, do they make a "real" one of these? Or would this guy still work? He's not much of a pipe smoker, I just think he wants to be goofy :)

You need to beware all those 'lord of the rings' look-alike pipes. You'll notice most all the pipes we're discussing have plastic stems. Those LOTR pipes are all wood, and the tips won't last through the constant saliva.

Hey Langston...Not to drift, but what was the name of those Cigars you suggested to me on the phone?? I totally forgot.

Former pipe smoker here. I gave it up reluctantly. I had a pretty decent collection and sold them all off.

I was a very infrequent smoker- and I only smoked outdoors- say when camping or out for a walk. But, I was on my wife's insurance then, and I had to sign a "no-tobacco" affidavit or face exorbitant premiums.

I smoked only straight-stemmed smooth canadian billiards, usually with fairly small bowls. They would heat up faster, but I was a very light smoker, so it never became an issue.

As for recommendations for the pipe- pick a style you like, be aware that a longer stem or a larger bowl will give you a cooler smoke. Filters can be good, but cheap ones do impart a papery taste to your smoke. in-stem dampers are good because they prevent an inexperienced smoker from sucking down cinders from a poorly-packed pipe.

Tobacco- try as many as you can. I would stay away from the bulk stuff in the drug stores. Find a local 'Tinderbox' or somesuch and talk to them. You can purchase small samples, and they can tell you what is in the blend so you'll know how your tastes run.

Enjoy! (In moderation)

I ordered a cotton bag of local African tobacco last year, the exchange rate is insane (cost me nothing really, even with shipping). The tobacco had a musty earthy leaf smell, it packed very well into the pipe and lit and stay lit for hours. It was kinda like smoking leafy dirt to me.....but i perservered. I gradually was able to pick out different 'notes' from the tobacco, i could pick out the shredded leaf tobacco, some virginia, there was local plants mixed in, almost a kninicicck (speeling?) blend, but MUCH stronger. It made pure black latakia taste like candy. The nic content was extremely high , the first time i smoked it , according to my friends, i went a shade of death grey, had sweat all over me and i felt sick. I had to be led to a chair to sit down, my friends said i would have blacked out.

My buddy in Afrika (hi Jim!) laughed for hours "thats our local blend, we roll it in paper and smoke it or use a corn cob. Its very strong yes? "

anyways, moral of the story, stay away from a certain local afrikans blend (Horseshoe Cotton) , its sold thru wesleys in a cotton drawstring bag. Brutal stuff, its like Perique tobacco x 10000.

now, frog Morton on the Bayou is my all time favorite. I'll go thru a tin in several days. Big, puffy, rolling white clouds of smoke, its very nice for smokerings, The aroma is incredible.

OK, I probably shouldn't admit this, but the best thing my ex-husband ever did for me was teach me to smoke a pipe. His smelled so good...I could never tolerate cigarettes...and I still enjoy a pipe full of MacBaren's Virginia now and then. For the record, they do make specialty "Lady's" pipes, but I am fond of a handmade briar I bought in Jackson many, many years ago. My advice is to take your time, much like scotch it can be an acquired taste!

I took a picture of my junky pipe drawer. I actually can't remember the last time I smoked a pipe though. Every once in a blue moon now, I'll have a bowlful and a couple of fingers of a good whiskey. Usually in the winter, sometimes when camping.

If anyone ever wants to pick up a refurbished "estate" pipe, I can highly recommend either of these places. You get a lot more pipe for your money if you're willing to get one that's been smoked but has been cleaned, sweetened, and buffed/polished.

I've got to fly to Ft. Huachuca later this week and hopefully make it back for this weekend and hoping I'll get a breather and get to smoke a bowl and have SEVERAL fingers of whiskey:thumbup:
