I've been smoking a pipe for at least forty years, if you don't count a 13 year hiatus. Don't buy cheap pipes. They are made of low quality briar, have lots of filler in the wood, and usually smoke hot. Buy something in the mid range, which will probably cost you at leat $50. A decent peterson or savinelli will cost $100 +. If you can get to a real tobacco shop, get samples of several tobaccos that smell good to you. (But, eventually, you'll discover that changing tobaccos often will make the pipe smoke "raw" i.e., it will taste bad. Keep the inside of the stem and mouthpiece clean, and don't let carbon build up inside the bowl more that about.10 inch. If it gets too thick, it will crack the bowl. As you smoke the pipe, use a tamper to keep pushing the ash down GENTLY. You should smoke it until there's nothing but ash in the bottom.

Have a good time, but remember it will be difficult to quit.

Kirsten pipes smoke cool and dry. The are easy to clean, use no "filters", are easily customizable, and replacement parts are easy to find/get. They are not the most stylish thing in the pipe world but they smoke great...

I smoke my pipe tomahawk.I've gotten some strange looks from people walking home from a long hike smoking a tomahawk on the side of the road.

I smoke my meerschaum, good smoke, cool, and proper humidity levels in the tobacco help.

Hey, by the way meerschaum pipes are light as get out and fragile, make sure you get a protective case.

I think i need to acquire a pipe hawk just to see the looks i can get... :D

I started out with a cobb but have since also acquired a low quality estate briar and a beautiful Ben Wade meerschaum full bent that seemed to be unsmoked until i got it. My favorite tobacco so far seems to be john's lament, it is described as cherry, cherry, cherry.

One day i will also acquire a giant calabash, if for nothing more than the looks it will get me. :D

So do you all like Cpt. Black as well?? I am looking for a cheaper alternative to Lane Ltd. 1Q. i think ive read that cpt black was made by lane...friend just got a pouch and said it was good. i know it is full of propylene glycol..yada yada...just dont want to spend the close to $50/lb for the 1Q they are asking at the shops here....

I smoke clay pipes like the ones in this picture...

I like smoking the old clays better than briar or any other pipe. To light up a smoke I don't use matches or a lighter....too modern. I actually use a flint and steel. I just take about a dime sized piece of char cloth and my flint and steel to strike a spark. I simply lay the glowing piece of char cloth on top of the tobacco and take a few puffs. I find using a flint and steel this way works even better than matches or a lighter...you don't get the sulphur smell and no problems with wind blowiing out your light. Another plus side is that it gives you an excuse to practice using your flint and steel for more than just lighting fires.:)

One other thing I almost forgot to mention... I found that to clean my clay pipes, it works really well to use a steel piece of pipe like Tai Goo's "muffle forge". Just stick the pipe into the "muffle" and then fire it in your forge. Works great and gives a nice even heat.

Go to the web site of J.R. Cigars, and go to bulk pipe tobacco. Order a 12 once bag of the Smokers Pride for abut 14 dollars. It's made by Lane, and is a Captain Black sold in generic bulk pack bags. A good smoke for very resonable price.

Never buy tobacco from local shops, it's a rip off what they gouge you for.

I like Captain Black Gold. The store where I live sells all sorts of fancy flavored tobaccos, but I prefer the plain pipe tobacco. People around me always say the Captain Black Gold smells the best....like freshly baked cookies.:D

True story:I was at the end of a long bush hike .I was passing through a thinned zone full of skinny trees when I came across a moose. It's late October and this is one of the biggest Bull moose I've ever seen.He turned to run away then he turned around and came back towards me.we stood about 10 yards apart staring at each other for about a minute.I was shaking in my boots.all I had with me was my pipe hawk and my bushcraft knife. He slowly turned and walked away.Almost as if he was saying "I could have but I didn't".I was scared as hell.I've never heard of a Moose doing that before.I sat down and loaded my pipe hawk up with some captain Black Gold and tried to calm my nerves.I was still smoking when i came across an crew of woods workers. The looks I got were priceless.A sweaty pale faced dude covered in mud smoking a small Axe was a little more than they were used to I think.

Pretty much.

Smoker Pride is the generic bulk tobacco of Lane LTD. The Vanilla cavendish is the regular Captain Black, the Whiskey Cavendish is a pretty close likeness of Borkum Riff. I doubt the lane company kept two lines operating for the tobacco, so they gave you a bulk bag instead of a nice round tin to save a bit of money.

I've been dealing with J.R.'s about 20 years now, and they're strait up people. If you talk to them on the phone, they'll work with you to match you up with a tobacco that you'll like.

......I recommend picking up a corn cob pipe to start out with, they smoke great even compared to very expensive ones..........

Sound advice.
I am still using the one you gave me, Spooky, and my Nordings don't get the use they once did. A lot easier on the choppers than my freehands as well.

OMG, can't believe I just fount this thread. Spending too much time arguing in Prac Tac I guess.

I smoke the pipe at least once a day. My favorite tobacco is Newmans Own. I love it, smoking it right now in the Man Cave.

I think every man should try it, forces you to slow down and enjoy life. It will take you a while to learn how to pack it correctly but that is all part of the hobby. It is a very valuable distraction.

Not sure if anyone else has any Christmas Tree Shoppes around them but they are a great source for classy glass containers to store your tobacco.- George

Well, you can suck it through a pretty pipe but it is still poison. Get that monkey off your back while you are still young enough to recover.

I guess it could be shaving years off my life, hopefully they will be at the end and would be shitty ones anyway.- George
