Anyone in PA want to plan a M&G?

Is there anyone in the PA/Pocono area that would be willing to kick start a Meet & Greet to get some forum members together? I'm thinking something like a day hike or even maybe an overnight trip. Something like a mini CT trip that just went on.

I am willing to help plan and organize any way I can but since I'm in DE there aren't too many places to get out and enjoy the wilderness in the kluge state.

Any interest at all? Summer is coming and would be nice to take advantage of the spring weather while we still have it.

I've got a baby that'll be here the beginning of August so I'd love to do something prior to that.

Hope to hear some feedback from you locals!

Just throwing some dates out there - let me know what you guys think. Of course the dates are contingent upon finding a place to go.

I'd come down from CT, as long as the dates work. Do you have any place in mind?

I'd be interested and even might be able to bring my dad along. I'm from central PA so as long as its relatively close i should hope to make it.

Nice - it's good to see so much interest so quickly. I'm going to do a bit of research and try and narrow down some selections based on location, size, hiking/camping party size limitations, etc. and will post some places tonight or tomorrow and see if anyone has feed back on these places.

Like I said - My hiking/camping has been limited to DE and places that we vacation to. I've only been camping once in PA and that was in Jim Thorpe when I went white water rafting. But I'll do my homework and get back to everyone!

Yes, great idea, I'd be interested to join in too. I'm in eastern PA and know some good areas for hikes in varied terrain. If you want to compare potential locations please contact me. I was kicking myself because I missed the CT adventure so this is a timely suggestion.

I'm in jersey until early july, after that, I'll be in Tx. As long as it was early enough I'd be game.

I just did some camping in this area. I was at in the Delaware State Forest, which ironically is in PA just west of the Delaware Water Gap. I was along the Thunder Swamp Trail System. I was out for 2 days and didn't see a single person, but there were obvious camp sites set up from other peoples previous trips. So you may run into some people, but not many. Also it should be noted that hunting is allowed here and I did hear some gunshots in the distance. Overall it was a nice experience.

Lots of good info. Thanks for posting. I'll probably be shooting you some PMs to try and get this thing moving. I saw a few different state parks that were in the Pocono area, but when I started looking at restrictions there were things like no overnight hiking and one did not allow hiking groups of over six people.

I'm not too crazy about seeing other people, although it would be nice not to see anyone since we'll probably have a bunch of knives and other toys out. Don't want the sheeple going nuts.

I saw the Allegheny Front Trail and thought it looked ok, but I know nothing about it other than what I have read.

I'd love to have this prior to July since I've got my first kid due the beginning of August. It'll be hard to get away from the house that far away for a weekend with an 8 month pregnant wife.

July in TX..... you picked a perfect time to move:(

I live about ten minutes from Jim Thorpe, so yeah, this could be good. . .my schedule might make it difficult though.:(

Let me(us) know what you can come up with.

Yes, PA is pretty strict on camping. This was the only place I could find that allowed camping before April 1st. Now that it is camping season, you can go in a bunch of places. There is the Delaware Water Gap, Round Valley State Park, Delaware State Forest, Rickets Glenn State Park, Nockamixon State Park. Those are all I can think of right now, but check out this link to find state parks: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/index.aspx

As you may know, State Forests are usually more lenient on things such as where you can camp, where you can build fire, etc. So I would recommend one of these.

Feel free to send me some PMs with questions. I have not been to most of these state park as I have only been going to college in the Lehigh Valley for a few years and am too busy to get out much, but I have done a lot of research on the areas.

The Allegheny Front Trail is great I've backpacked it. It circles the
Black Moshannon State Park which has a nice campground. I didn't hike it last year but there are a few places where a larger group could camp water is generally no problem and there are day hike options with it.
The Quehanna Trail is a good option too for day hike or overnight.
One of it's trailheads starts at Parker Dam State Park. theres also the Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company trail which connects Parker Dam to S. B. Elliott State Park I believe it's 8 or 9 miles long good day hike or short overnight , you can park a car at each park and shuttle. Both have nice campgrounds though Elliott State Park's is slightly more primitive and much more quiet, you wouldn't have the crowds to deal with like Parker Dam. All 3 places are easy to find off of Interstate 80....

Thanks for the input so far.

S.B. Elliot State Park sounds good. Looks like there are a bunch of trails and it also connects to the other state forests as you have stated, 7.5mas. Here's the link:

Annother is Parker Dam State Park - It has a connectors into different state forests. It also has campsites that in a "campground" area of the park. But it has bathrooms, no showers. I'm not sure anyone really cares about showers :)

Here's a list of trails in the Park Dam State Park:

Another great idea is the Delaware Water Gap

Here's some info on campsites near the Water Gap:

This is Dingman's campground and looks pretty cool. It's on the banks of the Delaware.

Car camping may not be a bad idea considering the potential we have for getting a large amount of people attending. Also - I really don't have a tent that would be good for backpacking.

I know this is a long post with a lot of links, but we've got a lot of good input and welcome more.

I'm going to throw some proposed dates out there in the next few days. I've got to look at my schedule and figure out the best weekend. I'm good for two nights, but I'd imagine that most people are going to come for one night. Either way I think it should be a blast once we get all the details out of the way.

See ya,
Anthony
