Anyone like METAL handles on folders?

My only all metal handle knife is the BM monochrome, which I really like. The handle fits my hand perfectly, and isn't too thick for an EDC. If the pocket clip wasn't there, it would be too slippery, I think.

I'm in love with mine, but it is slippery. I'm not very handy, but I'm thinking of using a dremel tool to score some lines into the handle to get a better grip. I know it will look funky, and I don't really care about the looks. I want it to be an EDC.Does anyone think this could help ???

I think you should look around here and see if one of our knifesmiths would checker that handel....really anybody who has this problem should try checkering;)

Solid metal handles probably aren’t my favorite, but I do like them. They’re simple and attractive. Plus, they don’t have to be thick to be strong, which makes for easy carrying.

The coldness of metal handles can be uncomfortable, but when you carry the knife, your body heat keeps it warm. It is weird how Ti doesn’t seem to have the same cold feel to it that steel does.

My preference tends to run towards smooth handle materials: horn, wood, non-jigged bone, metal, and paper or linen Micarta. They feel good in my hands and are easy on my pockets.

I think the shape of the handle and how you hold it is much more important to the security of the grip than the texture of the scales. Some designs are very curvy and sort of lock your fingers into place. Even if the handle is straight and doesn’t have a guard though, you can often wrap your pinkie around the pommel end (or brace it against your palm) to keep your hand from sliding onto the blade.

I agree with others in terms of looks , slim profile and heft. They wear well after time in pocket and I haven't had any problems with one slipping form my hand. Had a SS Spyderco Rookie and it was probably my fav EDC on/off duty, but it may have been handle shape and fit in my hand. I never really thought about it until now. That said, my FRN Spderco Snap-it is now my work knife and I carry a CF M16 as EDC. You can't even think about comparing the SS against either of those two in terms of grip. The M16 scales will actually file your nails; it has that much texture. That said, IMHO, metal-handled knives have an almost timeless appeal to them. Seems like something you would pass down to your kids, unlike FRN, which still seems too much like plastic and to some extent, cheap.

I like some metal (as others have already stated) IF it has a Coating, coloration, Inlay, etc. But plain SS handles are enough reason for me NOT to purchase a particular design.

The titanium handles on the CUDA MAXX's are cool with me,they work,at least for me,better(better grip) with gloves.Kinda' don't like aluminum handled knives, don't know why.

I think it will make it easier for them to pry it from my cold dead hands!!!

Either will work for me.

Just curious, Who lets thier knife get cold out of thier possesion?

Mine goes from my pocket, to hand, an back to pocket.:D

Lord forbid, dropping it in 1-5 feet of snow, they sink fast when warm :D

I like the titanium handled knives. Never had an issue with them. The metal handles are slimmer and it's easier to carry a bigger blade.

What he said, exactly.

Checkering my Leek
Krull, thanks for the idea. That'll look better than my crude attempts. I'll try to make contact with a willing maker.
Any leads on a good guy ?

I think that it really does depend upon the knife.
I had a Spyderco SS Endura and it was too slippery, as was my Benchmade 720.
But my Camillus D.Ralph EDC (steel) is very secure, as was the Benchmade Crawford Leopard (aluminum) and the CRKT S-2 (titanium).
I think that cutouts in the handle are more effective than texturing--the flesh of your hand just presses in to the cutouts, offering a non-slip grip.

Allen.

I would think a knife maker here on the fourm ask 'round folks here are friendly :D you might try a local gunsmith in your area too..they checker pistol grips on 1911's so a knife might be doable.

I think that if we try to say bluntly that metal is better than G-10 or FRN or whatsoever, we're comparing apples to oranges.
My handles material of choice is FRN (or zytel, if you like), but I do love metal handles too.

Personally, I love SS handles. I've gone with metal for both of my Spydercos so far. I tried the synthetics but they always felt kinda cheap to me. SS handles have a pleasing heft to them and I like the look.
