Anyone order one of the new BOB knives from TOPS?

You won't have any see through slices of carrots...

You know, in all my years, I have yet to encounter a carrot outside of my kitchen (in which are some specialized slicing blades) that needed to be sliced any thinner than I could do with my bare hands. Maybe I'm doing something wrong though...

Thats what I was thinking. IT takes care of the writing on the blade to...after you sand it a bit.
Soooo...does anyone have one? I like the looks of this one. 3/16" doesn't scare me at all. Its all in the grind, when dealing with scandinavian whittling power!
Looks like a nice high grind, should cut very well. You won't have any see through slices of carrots, but nothing I carry does that very well anyway.
I have rehandled a couple TOPS, and the lanyard tube isn't an issue, it will slide out of one side, staying in the other slab..usually.
I will be picking mine up today, was gone all week so it has sat at the post office waiting. I am really curious to see how it feels in hand.

I received mine on Saturday but with the holiday, I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. First impression is pretty good though. I like the blade shape, it is a departure from the standard Woodlore style bushcraft knife with a nice belly sweep. I really like the sheath setup with the metal clip, it gives me a lot of carry options since I usually don't wear a knife on my belt. Some cons: the handle is on the thin side and a bit blocky, don't know how comfortable it will be in extended use. The blade is also on the thick side for a scandi grind, but it should be pretty bombproof overall. I'll post more as soon as I can get it out to play with. For now here's a few pics.

Be sure to ask if they have knives in stock to ship. I waited 5 months for one, and finally had to cancel my order. Every time I called to check on it, I was told, "5 more weeks, 5 more weeks, 5 more weeks!" I finally gave up.

nice pics TK.... well I picked up my set at lunch, haven't had a chance to play with them at all but got to hold them abit before putting them away until this evening. Initial impressions on the BOB blade, I am pleased with how it turned out, at first feel the handle felt comfortable, the edge was definitely useable. The sheath is nice and for the price I won't complain but I have a leather horizontal bushcraft sheath that fits the blade so I will be using that instead. I will get pics up when I get a chance, it will make a nice companion for the Power Eagle which also arrived today. That one is nice (except the artwork on the blade). Feels like it will make a really nice chopper.

Thanks, I always like seeing in hand shots for reference so I figured I'd post some. Also, maybe Joezilla can chime in here but I'm a little confused on using the notch in the pommel for the firestarter. Can't seem to get a good spark off it.

I have a stupid question too, what are the 3 different fire rods for, does each one have a different purpose?

I could be wrong but I don't believe so. It's just a different take on the magnesium/firesteel idea as far as I can tell. Scrape the magnesium off the silver bars and spark them with the black firesteel.

gotcha, cool thanks I will try that when I get home.

To the gentlemen that have them in hand, the photos tknife posted make it look like it has a secondary bevel, i.e. NOT Scandi, as advertised. Which is it?

Thanks

It's pretty tiny, like half a mm maybe. But with the blade thickness it would be some work to get rid of it by hand. But look up richardj, he could get it to a true scandi for you fast and cheap and he does great work. I will leave mine as is since it will be easier for me to sharpen.

I like the looks of that a lot. I don't see what the big deal is with the markings on the blade.Lots of knives have markings and such. Do I love them? No. Would it affect me buying a knife that I thought was a good useful knife? Heck no. The stuff your cuttin doesnt know if the blade has any markings or not.

Unless you were cutting people, they could probably tell.

This might be the second Tops knife that I like the looks of. I kind of liked the Paysan (sp?)or something like that but everytime I saw one the price was a little high. No make that 3. I liked Swiss Bianco's too.

It IS a good looking blade. That doesn't really look like an actual scandi type grind to me, whether it is supposed to be a true 0 degree to the edge or similar to a Mora with the secondary bevel.

A quick update. I got a call from Mike Fuller (owner of TOPS) and he told me that some of the very first BOB knives to be made (which mine is) may have been made from a batch of steel that was set aside to not be used. He said I could send it back for a replacement, or use it and if any problems arose they will refund my money or replace the knife including shipping costs. Now I have used the knife for a grand total of two times. One to trim bottom branches from our Christmas tree, and also to process some firewood. Needless to say there were no issues. But I thought it was very cool, and in this day and age also uncommon to get such personal attention from a company (let alone the owner of a company) Just thought I would share that, and thank TOPS, and Mike for being honest and up front
