Anyone own a mineral mountain hatchet works Bowie? Some insight please.

I stumbled upon MMHW’s website and was throughly impressed with their utilitarian and rugged old school Bowie knives. There are 3 that caught my eye: 1) 10” deep woods Bowie (probably gonna get this) 2) 10” cabin fever Bowie (close behind) 3) 10” survival Bowie (love the handle shape, blade shape is decent). Are there any owners of MMHW knives that can attest to their quality and ruggedness? Does anyone own one or more of the 3 I listed? I would to see pics. Thanks guys, Damien.

I don't own any of their Bowies, but as I mentioned in a recent thread - I love MMHW. They are incredibly underrated. I have been more than pleased with mine. The heat treat and edge retention is incredible for 5160 steel.

I doubt you will be disappointed with any of their offerings.

A MM Bowie is on my to-do list.

I have one. Tried several times to post a picture. Gave up.

They are beasts. And, reasonable for what you get.

Very good value for your money in my mind. I have many of Ted's blades. If there is a weakness it may be the simple sheath. Forget which bowie I have of his, sorry.

I would only consider the sheath sub-optimal from a collector's standpoint. From a working man's standpoint, it's nothing you don't need, just a safe covering for the blade. Both views are correct.
Ted makes tools to be used. I know he likes the fact that some people collect his knives, but he's much happier about the fact that the majority of his customers actually USE the blades, and some
use the hell out of them. Count me in the second group....

I've owned a MMHW fighting axe for about 30 years...

Twice a year, Tulsa, Oklahoma, hosts what is billed as the largest gun and knife show in the world( I've missed about 4 in 35 years). True, or not, it IS a big show, and is where I met Ted and his brother Barry, 30+ years ago. I'm there for the blades, and I've seen a LOT of them. After Ted and Barry were banned from the Tulsa shows, mail order, or a trip to Arkansas, was the only was to get a MMHW knife or axe. Only rarely do I see one on the secondary market. The folks that buy them tend to hang on to them. There's a reason for that.

Just found/ordered this today. Pretty excited.

“Woodland Bowie” design. Not currently offered on their website - anyone know when this might have been made?

I only recently heard about this company and it sounds like they do great things with a shallow hollow grind and I’m a big fan of 5160. Should be quite a chopper (although I might wrap a bit of cord around the beak if it’s a pinch point…) :)

Take some 200 grit emery cloth and round the edges of the beak. Hit it with some cold blue. Good to go.....

Why were they banned? I bought my knife from them at Tulsa. Haven’t been in a few years.

I have had several MMHW knives. As mentioned already, the knives are good, but the sheaths are basic and weak. They are usually made of thin kydex and few hollow rivets.

I came close to seriously cutting myself while cleaning one of these knives. I was prepping a newly received knife for storage and had lubricated the blade. The sheath was in my off hand and I slid the 12+ inch blade carefully in through the top only to see it pop out the side, right by my hand. For some reason the sheath had been left unriveted and open for the top 6” on either side and there was no belt loop or retention system. If I had been going any faster I would have had to clean the blade again after the emergency room visit. The sheaths work for storage and may even work in the field, but you need to be careful and creative to use them.

Ted's brother, Barry, is/was (no idea if he's still living) very opinionated, very outspoken, and very loud. And his voice carried, amazingly well, in the IPE building. He'd been asked, on many occasions, to tone it down a little,
but that just made him louder! It got to the point where vendors several aisles over were complaining, and threatening to pull out of the show if Mineral Mountain was going to continue being there. One table versus 30-40, the writing was on the wall, and they were asked not to return. That was probably around '96 or '97. They've not been back since.

Mine was cheap ax sharp. When I called and complained I was cussed out. Very thick behind the blade. After many hours sharpening it will chop well being heavy as hell.
won’t slice for crap.Looks cool though. Reprofiled it would be nice.

So quick update on the Bowie (I actually forgot about this thread).

I got it from ACK.

Unfortunately I sent it back the next day.

Blade was slightly bent and edge was slightly bent in a different direction.

Third bent blade I’ve gotten from them (ACK) FYI, so now I always check.

The good news is that since I didn’t keep it I was able to get an even better (albeit more expensive) Bowie from Bill Siegle:

Amazing knife - can’t put it down.

The MMHW was nice and had it been straight I would have kept it, but it did feel overly heavy and was kinda thick behind the edge. Very sturdy design though.

I would love a Bill Siegle Bill Siegle Bowie. I’m not sure how to get one.
