Anyone really impressed by Cold Steel's DVDs?

The knife industry cannot even agree on standard testing. You think ANYONE would agree to a side-by-side torture test for-the-record. I'm sure there are legal reasons you can't use other people's wares in such a manner. As least CS is willing to make a statement.

Yeah, I realize that. I still believe that saying my knife is better because it can do these things doens't mean much unless a competitors knife won't. Otherwise it is just saying that a CS knife can do what many other knives can do.

Seriously, try some of the "stunts" sometime with your knives(be safe of course). ANYONE can say "So what?" But few have any real base for calling people out. Nothing against you personally, but more people need to understand this.

Actually I have tried some of the "stunts" or "tests", whatever you want to call them with my own knives. I haven't taken it to the same extent, heck I don't have a whole day to sit around slicing cardboard. I don't happen to have a spare car hood to stab at so I substituted some empty cans, but still the same idea. I have also done some free rope cutting, chopped 2x3's, tons of cardborad cutting, some fixed blade bending, and spine whacking folders as hard as I could. The only things on the video I haven't tried myself are hanging weights from the knife, and doing pullups on the knife. On all of the knives I have tested on my own I haven't seen any major failures yet.

Honestly at times I have thought about getting a CS knife or two. They have some wild looking designs, and some of their knives do get pretty steady praise. I just never really have found the desire to go out and buy one though, as I feel so many better options exist. I think I might just buy one or two CS knives and see how well they hold up in those tests if I do them for myself.

For the majority of the video I sat around laughing my ass off and mocking the funny looking fat man in tight safari gear. My gf and brother were equally amused.
The best part was his advice on killing a lion. WTF? Did you ever killl a lion with a F*ing spear, if you did your advice is wasted cause I sure as hell won't be seeing an in NY. "If you have time be sure to twist it around to enlarge the wound" WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?? Listen to yourself fat man!!

With that said I felt like I really needed a spear, and bought 3 other CS products. Yeah I'm a sucker. I also spent hours in my basement chopping at various different materials and shooting things with a crossbow. It got me hyped.

Amused, yes, impressed, on some things, they seem to hold up better than most cheap imported crap, I have 5 Cold Steel knives and for what I paid, am very happy with the knives.

Oh yes! I also laughed my head off with this "lion killing sequence". It's too bad that the fat dude did not show us how he does he on his trips to Africa with *real* lions, isn't it?!

I also noticed the size of the plastic lion he was showing this on, something like a Golden Retriver, or maybe a goat...

All that was missing was a disclaimer "this is a staged sequence, made by a highly trained professional - do not try this on your next safari"!

LOL

Needless to say, I am never *ever* getting a CS knife...

Jerry Busse has a standing invitation to 'live' torture testing (with real people there, not out behind the shed) to any other knifemaker or company side by side with Busse at a knife or gunshow. He has no takers as of yet.

Pretty ballsey to offer to put your hard won reputation out there in a live side by side test against any challenger.

I think Cold Steel products are pretty much "buy at your own risk". I wouldn't buy any more CS knives unless I got a chance to inspect and handle them first. Whereas other production companies (BM for example) are consistently high quality. That being said CS does make a few nice items in what sometimes appears to be a sea of crap.

Well, I don't understand why some post are so offending against the figure of Lynn Thompson? Nothing wrong with being a bit overweight!
Let's talk knives instead of offending the way someone is build. I bet more than 50% of us "forum members" are a bit overweight, or we know someone close who is!
So lets stop this crap and why don't we show some respect to the big guys/girls among us "respected forum members"!

Ok, I love the CS SRK, Ti-Lite (titanium handles) and the Gunsite serie, nothing wrong with those knives.
The dvd is somewhat overdone, but then again, I love knives and the dvd is amusing.

Regards.

i just received a Ti-Lite yesterday. it's quite a nifty little knife. good blade length, nice fit & finish for the price, and pretty fun to boot. of all the knives i've handled, Cold Steel ships some of the sharpest from the factory, second only to Spyderco (and perhaps tied with Kershaw).

Well said. I dont like Thompson's attitude or his products, but the personal shots about his weight are bush league, grade school stuff. I think there are plenty of legitimate gripes about him and his company, no need to go low road.

Whatever faults people may find in LT's personality or salemanship, I can say that I first became interested in knives because of the More Proof DVD.

Was I impressed? OH Yeah. When I first saw the More Proof DVD I though that Cold Steel knives were the best in the world. Of course, I didn't know anything about knives except what I was told in the DVD. I didn't know anything about different types of steel, blade geometry, lock mechanisms, or handle materials.

Now I know better. CS makes some excellent stuff, and some junk too. But truth be told, that over the top sales pitch called More Proof was my first step into becoming a knife knut. Now my dad and brother are knuts too. :)

If nothing else, that makes it OK in my book.

I enjoyed watching the DVD. It's entertaining. I've only seen the folding knife part of the video but I'm going to make sure I go back and find that lion killing sequence! Sounds pretty darn good!

The CS marketing hype on that DVD is no worse then the product hype I see in the commercials on TV. The CS DVD is just longer.

Hell, we do it to Mr. Moore, we can do it to Mr. Thompson. If you are grossly fat and put out a video of yourself, I guess personal remarks are kinda unavoidable.

As a 300+ pounder myself, I get kind of upset when people comment on politicians' weight, or a regular person's weight, but when someone is putting out videos asserting their physical prowess, I think they're fair game if they are out of shape.

"Conditioning is the greatest hold"

Wow, I hope if any of the other owners of knife companies are heavy that they dont show themselves in public, some of you guys would have a time with that. Lynn maybe heavy and not in that good of shape, but I suspect he is probably much tougher that most of the ones slinging the insults. Apparently he has participated in full contact matches, including a reference I found to dog brothers full contact stick fighting. It would appear he made a pretty good showing of himself.

If you dont like the product fine, dont buy it. You dont like him, fine. But if you find that you simply have to poke fun at his being a bit on the heavy side, well im sure most people could find plenty of your physical faults to poke fun at.

Yes, as I said, I'm a 300+ pounder myself. I would get upset if I did a video on courtroom techniques and people commented on my fatness. But, if I did a video trying to establish my athletic prowess, particularly as in the warriors series, then I think people would comment.

The DVD's are entertaining, but like everything else, they should be taken with a grain of salt. I own several CS knives, the Ti-Lite, X2, OSS, UWK, Peacekeeper II, and the Mini-Tac. I am very happy with the quality of these CS knives in relation to the price I paid for them (which was wholesale, so that really helped!), though I wouldn't submit any to the kinds of torture shown on the DVD's.

I'm kinda on the heavy side myself, so I found the remarks about LT's physique rather insulting, since a man's physical shape has nothing to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of a knife.

That's true. I guess I should apologize to y'all forumites. I'm a bit of a PT nut and have strong opinions about physical fitness.

But once again, why is it ok to make fun of Michael Moore's fatness? Is it because he casts himself in the center of his movies and puts himself on a pedastel?

Doesn't Lynn Thompson do the same?

Now, I ain't for or against CS knives. They have some good stuff and some lemons. But this thread is about the DVD's.

I wouldn't be surprised if LT is a handful to spar with. I've sparred with guys who are far more overweight than LT, and they gave me a very hard time. That's with knife-fighting, BJJ, boxing, etc. Don't let looks fool you.

Sure he put himself out there to be made fun of, but it certainly doesn't make us look good by taking the shots that have been taken.

As for the DVD, yeah I love watching it. It's about knives, whaddya expect? Did it make me buy CS products? No. They do make some nice products amid a sea of crap (the 420 series, etc.).

CS trailmaster? CS black bear classic? CS Laredo? CS X2 Voyager? Those are some of my favorite CS products, and they hold up to hard use.

They make some good stuff. Not everything they make is a winner.

But I like the DVD.
