Sooo...As my EDC habits continue to spiral out of control, I decided that it might be beneficial and interesting to track my EDC carrying habits. However, when I jumped into the iTunes Store, I found nothing remotely related.

Does anyone else use an app to track this?

Would you use a resource to track your EDC carrying habits? I can't be the only nut out there who would.

I wouldn't find it necessary, but it could be interesting. Assuming you just want to add duration to a basic inventory app?

I grab the knife that suits me for the day and all my other normal daily items. I only put thought into my knife and watch as those are the only items I have multiple options for. I carry to suit the clothes I am wearing and the place(s) I am going and my expectations for what the day will bring.

I may carry the same knife for a week or a month or I may carry a different one everyday ... I carry different items depending on my day ... all I can say is I always have a knife ... a flashlight ... and a couple other items ... but those vary also depending on weather my plans etc ...

but never felt the need to keep track of it.

I usually carry a smaller knife (para 3, Persistence) and a larger, heavier blade (cryo 2, 0566). Sometimes I just carry one knife. Really just depends. I usually just have trouble deciding what to carry! Enjoy using all my knives. Cheap, not cheap, don't care.

First, no, I would never track my EDC habits. I'm the one using and carrying my stuff so I already have a pretty good idea of what I do on a daily basis. If you feel the need to do so, then I say go for it.

Second, if I did track my EDC habits I wouldn't rely on some app that no doubt wouldn't cover things I would be interested in (like weather conditions, things I was doing that day, etc). I'd make my own spread sheet/database so I could track information that would be useful to me.

Having a ton of EDC stuff, I want to know how often I carry an item in a given week, month, etc to help. Duration would be a start, but I can it expanding beyond that. I looked at the inventory apps out there, but they only fit the basic "do I have it" need.

Seeing % of item combinations would be interesting too. Add an element of EDC type (e.g. weekend, work, hiking, home, etc.). Could get fancy and add some ML to predict combinations or suggest based on an item and activity :D

Unnecessary, but if you really want to make a spreadsheet on Excel or Google Sheets - it isn't complicated.

Even with a lot of EDC items, why do you want to track it? What problem are you trying to solve by doing this? If you're worried about an item being left in the drawer and not given any love, we'll it's because you just don't like it as much as the stuff you find yourself regularly carrying. You don't need a spreadsheet for that. o_O

But hey, you do you friend.

Yeah...I feel like with a little tinkering and consideration, it could be a useful app.

I like the EDC type ID aaa well. I was thinking you could create any # of groupings, based on location or container and that would fit right in. For instance, I always carry my comb, mini Bic, handcuff key, pen, SAK MiniChamp, Leatherman Squirt PS4, and RovyVon Aurora flashlight in my "wallet". These are my GUARANTEED every day items and I wouldn't want to have to enter EVERY item. So, by grouping, I'd just select my "wallets for the day and then load my knife and any other items I'd carry depending on the day.

For now, I've created a simple form on one of my websites for me to test the basic principal of logging my daily EDC carry. I can then export submissions to CSV and manipulate as needed. Once I have some data, I'll start tinkering and see where it goes from there.

I could see where this would be a good idea. It could help you evaluate a new purchase, before you make it.

Now, I grant that you could just look at the knives/flashlights/multitools you have, and get a pretty good idea of your buying trends.

I could also see where, if you're looking to slim down the collection, tracking what you carry could give you insight into what you don't carry.

Yeah brother...I'll start by saying that I'm OCD like a mofo and analytically minded. I've always enjoyed pulling value out of numbers (well before Billy Bean and sabermetrics).

Thx for the advice to use a spreadsheet. I use that for financials, etc, but what I'm thinking of is well beyond a spreadsheet.

I'll tinker with my form and see what useful/helpful information I can derive from it over the next month or so, if any.

If anyone has any other thoughts on how it might be useful, please feel free to spitball.

Unlawful detainment

By police or by a criminal? If by police I can't imagine the outcome will be good if you manage to undo the cuffs and they have to chase you down, lawful or not. Perhaps an attorney on retainer might be a good idea if you regularly find yourself in situations in which you may be detained by law enforcement.

What you want is moving into database territory to do it right.

Oh yeah...It would definitely be a SQL backend if really turning it into something others could use. Was looking to gauge the audience before putting too much time in it just got myself.

I don’t use an app or document it. Most of my knife use is at work, so that wouldn’t be a good use of time in the moment. I do occasionally keep a kind of running, ‘round down’ mental log. For example, since the last time I stropped my purple Keen, I’ve cut over 80 zip ties, 140 feet of cardboard, and 50 plastic straps, as well as countless little one cut tasks.

Expectation in my head is detainment by a criminal, but you never know when it might come in handy.

Never been close to a situation that requires it. Never even had cuffs on me. But for <$2 and minimal space in my wallet, it's there if I'm ever in the unfortunate situation to need it. Same principal as EDC'ing a Gun IMO.

I used to carry one on my belt (in case my wallet is taken), but I lost it and never replaced it.
