I don’t use an app or document it. Most of my knife use is at work, so that wouldn’t be a good use of time in the moment. I do occasionally keep a kind of running, ‘round down’ mental log. For example, since the last time I stropped my purple Keen, I’ve cut over 80 zip ties, 140 feet of cardboard, and 50 plastic straps, as well as countless little one cut tasks.

That's the sort of S that I'm talking about right there. Roll in EDC tasks performed to determine a maintenance schedule.

I've got a list of features going now for a theoretical one-stop-app for all things EDC in your life.

I get it...Some will think it's dumb or a waste, but I see potential. Having joined this forum ~1 month ago, I quickly realized that my wife was right and that I have an EDC sickness. But having found you guys here, I now know that I'm not completely alone in this journey.

You know, maybe if one took one's nose out of their smartphone and EDC apps, and kept some situational awareness, things like that might not happen.

Definitely don't disagree there. Phones make easy targets.

Took my wife years to really understand why I always ID exits anywhere we go and never sit with my back to the door.

So am I.

Here's my EDC algorithm:

1) Look at my knives.
2) Pick one or some.
3) Put in pocket.
4) Repeat later.

You're missing my first step:

0) Based on what I'm wearing and where I'm going, select the appropriate firearm and carry method

. . . otherwise your method is exactly how I decide what to carry.

1. You record your EDC loadout via a smartphone App.
2. App sells your data to someone who wants sell you their knife/flashlight etc.
3. App data gets uploaded to the cloud.
4. Cloud gets hacked.
5. Personal information about what's in your pockets becomes available to anyone.

Personally, I think we need fewer Apps in our lives, not more. We already give up way too much of our privacy to subsist in a digital world. Just say "no" to Apps and sharing of your personal data.

But then again, I'm an old fart.

Glad that works for you brother.

Don't need an app or WiFi or even Bluetooth, brother.

If you can build around scenarios where your home is invaded, your wallet taken, and then you are handcuffed, I'm sure you can envision a scenario where internet goes down....EMP or something like that.

Then how are you going to pick a knife, brother.

Appreciate your insight. Don't totally disagree with that. Spending my career in corporate IT, we're definitely in a world where your data is likely to become public regardless of what you do. This is simply because your personal data is in the hands of many who are ill equipped to protect it (ie Target, Best Buy, Macy's, etc). So, definitely the less you put out there, the less exposure you have.

I'm also mostly behind with on sharing personal information. Depending on the circumstances, I may be willing to give innocuous data that has been sanitized/obfuscated of any identifiable detail to better the product, like add a knife model or flashlight to the product list.

That being said, I appreciate a good app. What I had in mind would be homegrown for the EDC communities that I'm involved in. So, financial interest and selling off data isn't really an interest. But hey...It unfortunately seems to be the standard model these days. So, I agree with that mindset.

This scenario is about daily convenience, but I see what you did there.

Have you ever qualified an App for distribution through Apple or Android? You might find you hopes of a "homegrown" App are dead in the water before you begin.

If you need a spreadsheet for all your EDC items, you have too much crap. Pick a few that you you use the most, that are the most reliable and useful, and go from there. Carrying too much stuff that you will not use and takes up space is silly. Sleek and useful is the name of the game when it comes to practical EDC.

And if you are carrying a handcuff key at home because you are scared of bad guys, I'd highly recommend you fortify points of entry.

You know, I have nothing against technology, and I'm an Android junkie.

But we are all here because we are passionate about knives. For me, passionate enough to be able to pick out a knife I want in my pocket, or know when to play/tinker with my knives, or know if I don't like a knife I bought.

I don't need an app to tell me that. My passion for knives tells me that. Same reason we are here.

The app I use for tracking my EDC items is called "what's in the pockets of the pants I wore yesterday".app which in combination with "what knife will I carry today".app and "am I going someplace that doesn't allow knives".app covers my uses.

What can I say, I'm a simple man.

My thought.... who cares? If you care, write it down and keep a log. What possible use is the information other than some sort of response here on BF.

I track rainfall at my home. I actually have a use for this information. I write the information down on a wall calendar and summarize by month on my computer.

Sooo...As my EDC habits continue to spiral out of control, I decided that it might be beneficial and interesting to track my EDC carrying habits. However, when I jumped into the iTunes Store, I found nothing remotely related.

Does anyone else use an app to track this?

Am I crazy for even having an interest in monitoring my EDC habits?

Would you use a resource to track your EDC carrying habits? I can't be the only nut out there who would.

If you want to track it, the easy way would be to use something like Google Docs/Sheets to have a running spreadsheet you can update from the app.
