Anyone try a Tilley T3 or Tarp Hat for hiking?

Good hat needed for a variety of conditions, from summers in Alabama and the attendant heat, humidity, sun, and rain, to winters in TN-NC (Smokies). Any suggestions?

I experimented last summer with a cotton Tilley-style souvenir hat from Gulf Shores while I was on the coast. It was poorly fitted - yet effective at keeping the sun off the back of my neck. Drooped excessively even in a lite shower. I was thinking now of a better fitting one from Tilley, like their T3, or even a Tarp Hat from 'Real Deal Brazil'. The latter was used in the current 'The Losers' movie and previously, 'Zombieland'. A zombie movie chapeaux - gotta be a good omen!

It's been many years since I 'had' to wear a hat - and that a silly looking white hat. I wouldn't wear a hat for years - but skin cancer is real - had close calls - need protection. This would aid survival, too, in an extended day hike, etc. Suggestions?

Kakadu makes a damn fine hat, but the 10 dollar GI issue boonie hats are pretty much unbeatable for daily wear.

I love my tarp hat! I treated mine with sno-seal (a wax based leather/boot waterproofer), now it not only keeps the sun off, but is completely waterproof too! Probably not as breathable as a Tilly, not sure never owned a Tilley, but it's better than any of the other hats I have right now.

+1 for the tarp hat

recently bought one, so haven't had a FULL go with it yet, but so far i am very happy.

+ 1 For the tarp hat as well...although when standing in direct hot sunlight, I think it could be more breathable...my noodle got a bit warm watching a parade one day, but for a hike in the more shaded, wooded areas, they are great! I can't speak for a Tilley, I've never owned one. -Matt-

The REI Explorer hat is similar to the Tilly. I have one and it's quality kit. The GI-style boonies are lighter though, which makes them better for hot weather, IMO.

Been having things burned off my skin for the last few years, so have gone to a hat lately. I'm not a hat guy, and particularly dislike baseball caps. After trying many I have to say I prefer the Real Deal tarp hat. Not too hot, not too cold, not littlekidish or oldmanish. I like the lower crown on this hat.

I have and wear one of the "Real Deal Brazil" hats and I really like it. Keeps the sun off me and looks great doing it.:D

+1 on the tarp hat. I've been using Tilleys for a few years now and they are cool, comfortable and efficient but ugly as hell. I just got a tarp hat and not only does it look good, I like the fit way better- that means I'm more likely to wear it and benefit from the sun protection it offers.:) Unfortunately for me, I have found out the hard way that I have reached, as my dermatologist put it, my "genetic limit" of sun exposure. I'll be ok, but I wish there was more info. on the dangers of sun exposure when I was growing up.:(

I wore a T3 for many years, but the last ten years or so i prefer a marpat boonie hat. White stands out too much, i prefer to hike unseen.

Out in the western part of the state, it might start a fight to wear that hat.:D Out there is cowboy country.;)

I think the Tilley T3's are ugly and that Tilley has much better hats than the T3. For summer sweat, the AirFlo style they have are pretty good. Mine is so light I can wear it all day with out any hat fatigue. It also looks much better than the T3. I've never tried the Tarp hats yet, but they look pretty neat.

I have both. Tilley is more functional and the Tarp hat is more aesthetics but they're both great and both stylish. If you're a hat man, you won't rest until you have both :D

Perhaps I'll take some photos of my hat "collection" tomorrow. A good selection of hats is an important part of the woodsmans wardrobe! Go ahead laugh at me! I know I am :D

I looked high and low for an Urban Sombrero from J. Peterman but ultimately settled on a T3. I like it.

I have a Tilley T5 that I wear hiking as well as off shore fishing in the Gulf...does everything its supposed to do and doesn't backtalk! It gets a little warm at times so I'm looking to get a Tilley airflow soon. I like the looks of the tarp hat but I personally prefer the confidence in Tilley's reputation...
