Anyone try a Tilley T3 or Tarp Hat for hiking?

USGI Boonie here. Really dig it. sometime i roll cowboy style...sometimes i roll shady style. Seems to work great for me.

Good hat needed for a variety of conditions, from summers in Alabama and the attendant heat, humidity, sun, and rain, to winters in TN-NC (Smokies). Any suggestions?

I think you need two hats.

The hemp hats are great in cooler temperatures.

But for the SE summers, I really love my LTM6 Airflo (it has larger brims). Helps me keep a lot cooler.

If you really like the Reel Brazil hats, get one for your cold weather forays and the AirFlo for summer.

I just got a T3 AirFlo. I haven't got much time under it but so far, its a great hat. I give it :thumbup:

Bought my Tillie hat from Tillie himself at the Annapolis sailboat show back in the late 70s. Great product, still intact.

Tilley T3 is a great hat. Also an excellent pot holder, fly swatter, etc. Ugly, yes; functional, totally.

Come to think of it, may have ben 83 when I returned from the PI. All I know is that the hat is indestructible

Well, I had already ordered the Tarp Hat - and it just came in - neat! I also ordered the T3 - it's on it's way. One should do for most needs. The Tarp hat, XXL for my 7 7/8 noggin, fits great. Heck, I even ordered the movie 'Zombieland' just to see Woody Harrelson wear it. Okay, that's just wrong... I like Zombie-movies!

Thanks for all of the help & suggestions.

I've wanted a beaver fur felt hat for quite a while, but the 100% beaver hats that I like are always around $600. I just can't justify the cost for the amount of wear it would get.

Cool hat Bernie.

I tried wearing hats , but I get to hot even in mild weather. I need one to roll up and put in my pocket.

I have a Tilley LT3 for hiking --- light nylon and light color. I also have a T5 in cotton canvas with a cobra braid paracord hatband.

Tilley makes very high quality hats with all the little features tweaked just right-- the way it sits on your head, the lanyards, sweatband.

If wearing one in town, you need to carry a stick to keep the women from rioting and tearing your clothes off :)

Well, the T3 came today - really well thought out - and a bit dressier, I think. My wife said she'd ravage me the next time I wore either one of the hats... they may be a 'good thing' afterall. My fever broke - from a sinus infection - maybe I'll wear one soon. Thanks for the help, guys.

i have a white T3 and a green T4 in hemp.

can't stand the T4. it's "too big" at least for me.

want to get another T3 in tan. i've known people who've died them... so if you want to get rid of the white you can. boonie hats are nice, but the brims are too short. the cords on the Tilley are nice if it's windy. it was designed as a sailing hat.... and you can't expect to stop the boat and run back if you lose your hat.

the Tilley is crushable. i can stick it in the tankbag on my motorcycle and it's fine when i pull it out. i don't think the wire brim on the tarp hat would be so happy, but they look cool.

locally, "Metro" (the Vegas SO) issues tan Tilley T3s to the officers doing traffic control at concerts, etc. don't know if all officers get them, but some do.

my 7 7/8 noggin

the hemp T4 that i have and can't stand is that size... and it's looking for a new home.

it's been washed a few times, has some dust on it and needs to be washed again. it's been sitting out in the garage collecting dust. only worn once or twice.
