Anyone use a Shemagh?

When I'm out in the sun all day, I wear a Buff. Lightweight UV model for summer, merino version for winter sports. I can wear it to just cover my neck in conjunction with a hat, pull it up over my ears/nose, whatever. A lot less bulky than a shemagh, and without the cultural baggage.

No shemaghs in my family. If someone wearing one walked up to talk to me, I'd walk away.

I've been carrying a Recon Wrap in my pocket like a handkerchief, for years. Same as a Buff, which I just got one of them too recently. Especially for dust, smoke, and wind, it stays in place, and is easy to shift for more or less coverage. Even in cold weather as thin as it is, it cuts wind chill a lot.

I also have a recon wrap (specops multicam), and love it. Lighter and more breathable than any shemagh or bandana. Lots of coverage options as you note. Easy to keep in a cargo pocket. Only thing I don't like is it accumulates stink a little to easy. I've had mine for only a short while, and already it smells...interesting.

The thing w Recon Wrap is you breathe through it. Garlic, salsa, cabbage, beer, it all gets trapped. :)

So when you get home and notice? Toss it in the sink with a little soap, blast hot water, rinse it out, hang it up. In a few hours it's clean again and dry.

Well, I tend to wear mine on the head, or neck. Not so much over the face. So it's mostly sweat-stink, which I find not so easy to get out of synthetic materials in general. I see there are some wool versions out, I may have to give one of those a try. I doubt they'd come in cool camo flavors, however...

Here is a cool way to turn a shemagh or bandana into a closable bag or for use as a basket...

I don't like being covered up, tried shemaghs, bandana's, etc. quite a few years ago, and just couldn't make them work for me.

With current events being what they are, I fully agree with the below statement. I guess I'm a redneck, I'm fine with that.

My buddy got me a shemagh while teaching in Iraq. I've gotta say I dig it in the winter up here in Alaska. Works well as a scarf despite being fairly light and can be used to cover the head and face to help mitigate wind when you are out and about. Not a substitute for a good balaclava but works well in a casual setting. Never tried it during the summer although I'm sure it has its utility.

I'm cool with that. I don't like talking to people who judge books by there cover. ;)

I keep one in my truck and pack. Used it as a scarf, sun shade, blanket for my daughter, towel, and camo to break up my outline.

No offense intended, brother...

Is there any particular brand which is considered better/best? I've been looking on Amazon as living in a very hot buggy state (Louisiana)I believe I could benefit from utilizing one.
 We reside in the same hellish swampland jungle state.

I usually carry a bandana and rags with me everywhere I go and after seeing this "super bandana" I'm going to be picking up one as I think it would have come in very handy keeping the skeeters off me earlier.

wore one for months, occasionally wear one now when I feel the situation calls for it, (dust, rain, cold) and don't much care what anybody thinks about it or my choice of pants, boots or hat, for that matter. I don't really understand why anyone would care, honestly.

I'd be glad to discuss their opinion of what I decide to wear when I'm out and about tho, as long as they don't mind me offering a retort.

I have and do find them useful. YMMV

I use one when doing big wall rock climbing and will be on a vertical wall all day or multiple days with no shade. Like someone above said I soak it with water and usually just wrap my neck with it but sometimes I wrap it over my head to get some shade on my eyes so I can stop squinting for a little while.

Well, to put it in perspective, I don't give a tinker's damn if a hipster doesn't approve of my jeans. But if something I wear is liable to incite a potentially violent confrontation, I steer clear. Just like I don't put controversial bumper stickers on my car, or put political signs on my lawn.

A large old army surplus scarf was 1\4 the price and does the same job outside.

Well guys, I've ordered one.

So we'll see how I like it when it comes in, it might be a twice folded bandana most the time until I wanna sit on river bank or something with enough room to fit the little lady as well , idk, time will tell.
