Anyone Wanna do the Grand Canyon

HDW,
I am down in Tucson and am very seriously considering your offer. I would love to do something like this, and as it turns out, have to burn almost 25 days of vacation before the end of the year. I am going to get about 10 of those out of the way pretty quickly here, but as for the rest???

Let's chat soon. PM inbound!

PM received. Responding soon.

HDW,
I'd love to do it, but I work weekends. I'm pretty close actually, only about 6 hours away from the north rim, 8 or so from the south. It's been on my to do list, but I'm just having too much fun in the Utah canyon country to have made it down to the Strip this year. Had to turn down a free ride on a 16-day trip down the Canyon this summer, cuz I gotta work! That really hurt.

If you're that close it's only a matter of time before you'll make it. Utah's not too shabby itself. :D Passed on a 16 day trip? Yikes! Don't overdo the work man. ;)

I wish I lived close enough to get up and go. I've been there once and hiked the rim, but I want to go down inside.

I tell my wife all the time that I WILL hike the canyon before I die.

Have a blast and post plenty of pics.

Plenty of pics guaranteed. Don't wait too long. (It gets harder. :D)

I've done it twice to the Phantom ranch - Kalib trail down and Bright Angel trail up.
November is a good time to do it.
There is an RV park in a great location in walking distance to the rim.

That's the route we would follow. Makes sense to climb out on Bright Angel because it is not as steep and has water available (usually). Kaibab offers the best views and adds variety to the trek.

what would the nearest airport be ?

Not sure how flexible the flight schedule is in and out of Flagstaff, so here's another option. I also go through Albuquerque on the way to the GC, so I could pick you up at the ALB SunPort on the way out and return you there after the trek. Either way I can save you the expense of a rental car on this end of your trip.

P.S. If you would like to come a few days early you could stay with us in Los Alamos to recover from the initial stage of your trip.

Looks like "on the edge" will be joining me from Tucson. How about it Hollowdweller? A party of 4 would be just right.

Thanks Bill. Talking to the wife about it now. Will get back w/you. Have to run it thru the farmsitter also.

Thanks silent hunter.

I've submitted a request for hiking information and a hiking/camping application form on line. Now I'll have to wait 'til they mail the application to me. Then I fill it out and mail it back. When I get the application I will need a little info about all participants. I think we will be early enough with our application to be successful.

The planning stage of the trek has begun.

I'd like to do IT in the grand canyon...LOL

Seriously, I wish I could even consider this Bill. Unfortunately. Aint happenin.

How many days would it be HDW??? The actual hike? Trying to get a good handle on this.

Three days in the canyon. One day to hike down and two days to climb back out. Last year I spent a day in a motel at GC Village both before and after the hike. The restaurants are really good.

Okay, I got the Permit Request Form in the mail today. I will be leaving for a two week vacation in Texas on Monday, three days from now. I should mail the application back to Reservations on that day so it doesn't get lost in the vacation shuffle and we have a good chance of getting the dates we want.

Turns out the only information I need from other participants is:

1. State/Lic Plate of second vehicle: Do you plan to drive "on the edge"?

2. Number of people: Hope you and the missus can make it "hollowdweller".

Lodging at Grand Canyon Village before and after the trek is optional and reservations can be made separately. I will reserve a room the day before and after the trek, and I don't mind sharing the room if someone wants to save a few bucks.

The itinerary will be: CORRECTION

Monday, Nov. 3: Arrive at Grand Canyon Village and spend the night. I can provide transportation from the airport in either Flagstaff or Albuquerque.

Tuesday, Nov. 4: Hike from South Kaibab Trail head to Bright Angel Campground on the North side of the Colorado River. There is a shuttle bus service to take you from the Village to the Trailhead.

Wednesday, Nov. 5: Hike from Bright Angel Campground to Indian Garden Campground. This is an easy hike.

Thursday, Nov. 6: Hike out of the canyon on the Bright Angel Trail. Spend the night in the Village.

Friday, Nov. 7: Return home. I will be driving through Flagstaff and Albuquerque and would be glad to provide transportation to either airport for anyone who needs it.

The park fee is $10 plus $5 per person per night. Meals and lodging are separate, but reservations should be made as early as possible to ensure having a room.

Looking forward to the trek folks.

Cheers, :)
