talk about anything knife related. i thought this be a good idea to learn about stuff and to interact with others, so i will start off with one question and it will most likely turn into another subject as time goes on which is a good thing.

question 1:
do you like Gerber products ?

whats your favorite Gerber product and why? <YES/NO> why not? did you have a bad experience with them?

Answer 1: With a few exceptions, I despise Gerber products. I used to blame their poor quality on being made in china, but after using a few made-in-china Kershaws, I learned the truth. Gerber thinks that the consumer is an idiot and that he or she will blindly trust them at face value. Hence the "Legendary Blades" and Bear Grylis gimmicks.:barf: Gerber knives are consistently produced with 440A blade steel and plastic pivot washers. They are crap. The older made-in-usa gerbers were good knives.

Save yourself some money, take that $35 you were going to spend on a Gerber and buy a Kershaw. You will thank me later. :)

No, I'm not much of a Gerber fan. A few of their fixed blades are decent but most everything else they make is overpriced and overrated. A lot of people buying their knives know this, but it's funny to me how many people buy their knives and act like they got something really high quality. They are a mid to low quality manufacturer that somehow has the reputation (with certain people of course) of a higher quality brand. I strongly agree that there are knives made by companies like Kershaw, Ontario, and Buck that are in the same price range as Gerber knives but have far better quality materials and construction.

Gerber has the reputation they do for three reasons:
1. Past Performance: In the 1970 and 1980's their knives were great. Now not so much.
2. Majority Product Perception: If 75% of a display is Gerber, than the people think they must be good just because they are 75% of what retailers are offering.
3. Bait and Switch: The military Gerber folders are the real deal. S30V, Tactical, automatic, made-in-usa. The civilian "copy" of their military folder is chinese steel, made-in-china, crap. Soldiers get home and go buy the knife they think they had in the military and brag about it, not even knowing they have been fooled. Civilians then go buy Gerbers thinking they are "Tactical".

Most people do not sharpen their knives.

Even worse - most people think their knives are sharp.

Edge Pro

Most sushi chefs cant sharpen their own knives either.

I sharpened at least 3 knives today including a $1000 masamoto yanagi.

but holy mother of god, those that can afford it, get a konosuke fujiyama white steel 2 gyuto! Superb knife!!!

I do own a gerber, the paracord knife with Bear Grylls marking's on it. I don't like the knife. the ergos are bad.

I still do not understand why people buying fakes, or crappy knives. yes it is cheaper, but 10 of that and you could get a delica or izula or kershaw leeks here. BTW, Sanrenmu, Enlan, etc aren't crappy knives but it is kind of difficult getting them here. But people still buys those crappy knives... which could last them only a week (teflon washer, supersoft steel... etc)

Ugh my good buddy all of a sudden wants knives but will not spend more than 100, but wants high quality... but has thousand dollar kitchen knives.

He wants premium steel, Ti handles/scales and no blade play etc.

I recommended hinderer but scoffed at the price.

I think ZT should offer black wash on all their models! (i feel much better now i found a place to vent)

If you are friends with someone whom Hinderer will directly sell to, they aren't really any worse than a Sebenza or a Strider.

Very true. I don't really shop for knives in Walmart or Target but in recent years when I have casually looked at their selection I've noticed they are progressively carrying less Gerbers so they can sell more desirable brands at a similar price point such as Kershaw, Cold Steel, and SOG. It seems to me that if Gerber doesn't shape up soon they will start losing a good bit of business if they haven't already because some of their marketing ploys such as the ones you mentioned aren't working so well anymore.

Anyone here make a living using knives? Like chefs? I think I lucked out being a chef because I LOVE knives, more than most chefs.
