Tsukumogami, 付喪神, means "tool spirits" in Japanese. The folk belief refers to everyday objects that are in use for 99 years or more and develop or acquire a spirit or consciousness. In the process, of course, they will also show use, age, repair marks, dings, and so forth. Just like people! Compare this to The Velveteen Rabbit, who comes to life only after years of loving attention by the child who plays with him, only after his eyes have been pulled off and reattached, his stuffing reinserted and sewn up, and his velvet finish worn smooth. Every culture has reverence for well used yet cared for objects. This is the start of yours. On its 100th birthday it will have become self aware. May we all experience the same!
