Anyway to tighten loose blade play besides tightening the pivot?

How are you adjusting the detent? Can you provide a brief explanation?

Take the knife apart, then with a flat head, doesnt take much effort, press it down so its flat with the liner and hold it there for 10 sec. That should be enough. Or press it down firmly a few times. Try not to do it to hard, otherwise you won't have a detent :)

maybe the type of steel used for pivot screws is too cheap..titanium would be more stycky so less play....juss my 2 cents

well I was just guessing...but really those screws arent doing what they are suppose to do...to keep it tight....

we inveted the M1 Garrand.....which gave you victory.....

According to the information I was able to find, Garand's family left quebec and moved to the States when he was a child. Besides that, how is Canada involved in the development of the M1?

Give credit where it's due, and don't claim more than what it is.

Nope ..Nope! ..Guns are illegal in canada. That's why he had to come to the states.
:D

but really ...what do you guys think about titatium for pivot screws?

Bad... Ti is softer than most if not all stainless steels. Whenever you're asking about "what if" for materials, I always think if there was a way to make it better, Chris Reeve would have incorporated it into his knives since they're always built upon the "cost is no object" philosophy.

It's just the cost of having a knife with a strong retention detent and a larger pivot so you get more friction which in turn, undoes the pivot. You just have to switch knives man...

WOW! I've been saving cash and looking into getting an Emerson for a while. This completely changes my mind. How can a knife be so popular and have these sort of problems?
I have many knives and most are under 60.00. Right now I'm carrying my sanrenmu ZB-T21. I've used it nearly everday for 10 months like it was a 10.00 knife...and it is. I've been pretty hard on it since the beginning. It still has no play in any direction.

I read most of the post in this thread and I'm still looking for an emerson guru to get upset and correct everyone about blade play and liner lock failures.
Oh yeah, is the best answer to buy one for 200.00 and then send it off to have it made into a framelock or take my new 200.00 knife and start tweaking it?

ive owned 12 emersons and carry on eeveryday. i know people have had issues, i haven't had any problems. i just love emersons. they have always worked well for me, i love how they look and work, and all arguments aside i just think they are flat cool! and im willing to spend 150 bucks for one because i think they are cool. and thats what i carry. u like yer 10 dollar and 60 dollar knife, great. i like my 150 or 180 or whatever knife.

Or you could buy a 200 dollar knife that works out of the box? Try a Bradley Alias, Benchmade Subrosa, Spyderco Military, or Zero Tolerance 0350 if you want hard use beater knives that won't fail you

Yep, I probably will look elsewhere. It seems that a good portion of the threads here are about troubles with them. Some are about fit, some about lock systems, some about finish...
I do some custom work on knives and was looking to start working with the emersons.
If I don't have faith in a model/brand then I don't mess with them. Whenever I work on a knife I like to know that "it must be something I did to it" to cause trouble if any problems arise. I like to rule out the manufacturer. It's hard to believe that I will most likely need to take it apart, reset the detent, ad some locktite and teflon tape then re-assemble.

My main point initially was how can a knife from 150-300+ need work out of the box because of bad fit, thumb studs falling off, locks failing....when I can buy a Junkyard dog for 40-50.00 and have ner a problem after handling a hundred of them?

Over the last week i have received a new stonewash persian and roadhouse. Both are very smooth to open with no blade play at all. Maybe Emerson only send the best to us Aussies :-)
