Haven't previously noticed Council Tool's "Apocalaxe", maybe it's new?

From the product description:
"This versatile tool can be used like an axe or a hatchet and also features both a hammer head for general striking and a gut hook for skinning. The forged high carbon steel blade is super sharp, and an opening behind the blade allows for a sure hold when you’re doing detailed cutting work. The end of the handle features a bottle opener, and the molded polymer grip ensures excellent control and slip prevention."

Looks like the hammer (and bottle opener, no comment) can be used while the sheath is on the head.

Man another tool company making toys for mall ninjas. It's kind of a shame to see respected companies like Council or Estwing buy into/ sell this kind of thing.

Not such a bad idea. Remember, only for use after shtf when you need one tool to do it all. This one weighs only two pounds, and you won't have to add a sak, opinel or mora to your load. And, you can breach a door and open a soda with this implement.

I advised Margo more than a year ago that they needed to make a basic machete to provide a USA-made alternative to Ontarios...but I guess things like this are more important. :p

I don't see anything wrong with companies trying new things.....There's a market out there for this type of product and there is money to be made.

When Estwing made the Black Eagle Tomahawks a lot of folks talked negative about it but there is just a big market out there and a lot of consumers are spending money on these particular type of tools.......How cool is it that you could walk in to your local Home Depot and pick up a USA made tomahawk built by a reputable company that has been making great hammers for generations.

You really know that established companies are hurting badly for business and 'fishing for sales' when they leave their realm of expertise and start catering to the 'fashion' market. Can't blame them either if it allows for continued manufacture of tools of theirs that are known and are good. But in trying to make a satisfactory gizmo that defies the odds of living up to durable engineering standards would give me nightmares.
At the moment I am driving a school bus. The older buses feature specific Council Tools hatchets that are fully tempered and have intentionally dulled and serrated blades whereas the newer buses have red-painted 'made in China' crowbars on hand instead. Could be some gung-ho younger guy in this business gets the go ahead to equip new-purchase buses with 'survival hatchets' somewhere down the road but I'm not going to wait for this. And if it does happen I will be hiding an old 'boy's axe' somewhere onboard in case of real emergencies.

my my.. all thats missing from this thread are the boards of the old folks' home's porch creaking under a bunch of rocking chairs....

looks like a pretty interesting combination tool to me.. and it hardly looks like it would replace a (real) axe for dedicated wood chopping, so i dont understand bemoaning the choice of the manufacture to offer it.. its not like they are going to stop producing normal axes to concentrate on this thing. it has a good appeal to a growing niche of outdoor recreatorians who like to carry combination tools instead of an array of ideally suited ones. if they have the money to branch out, you should appreciate that because they are that much further from shutting down and not providing any tools at all.

That's the first time that I have seen the term "mall ninja". I love it.

I agree that it's a mall ninja tool. But I'm glad they're making it and I hope they sell a bajillion of them. If tools like this and Estwings tomahawks keep these companies in business making tools in America then I'm all for it. I would hate to lose Estwing or Council Tools. I applaud them for branching out.

Seeing that thing makes me want to buy the Gerber tomahawk. Ack! I'm sure the Council will be made well, if my experience means anything in this project. However, it doesn't have a single feature I find remotely useful other than a sharpened edge.

I've never found gut hooks to be helpful.

I can choke up and use a "normal" profile axe just fine, probably better than that steel handle with long tail on that thing.

No belly to the edge to be seen.

Other than the fact that I can open a bottle with any number of other things, I can't see it being convenient to use this.

That sheath though... looks amazing. If the price is ok, I may get one just for that 😆

Really?
It's been the "go to" phrase around here for many years to denigrate the choices of everyone who has taste different than yours.

It all began with good old Gecko45:

Yeah but I only recently found this forum. Glad to learn that there is so much comedy gold out there.

I read about halfway down, my gut feeling is that Gecko45 was playing along, no way anybody could write that stuff and expect to be taken seriously. Right? Right?!

I had wondered where the term originated. You have made my night :)

On the subject of the thread. Am I wrong in thinking it's probably a good thing if a product like this helps a reputable company do well in times where the economy and market aren't as strong as they were and where there is a lot of competition from companies who can compete on cost?

If it's a solid product it might even find a place beyond what they envisage.
