I watched ” The Book of Ely”, “2012″ and “The Day after Tomorrow” and they scared the crap out of me ’cause they all could happen, ANY DAY! So a couple of weeks ago I was out at the Redbud Forge wondering around, glad the winter was over when I thought of the ” Apocalypse”. I grabbed a chunk of old bush-hog blade, lit the fire and started hammering. This is what I came up with, no planning, not really thinking that much about it, I just made the most of what I had at the time.

This is what I ended up with that day, Socket handle so it could be used as a spear if need be, plus there is nothing to break. 17″ overall with 10″ sharpened x 2 1/4″ wide. 1/4″ thick at the spline would take some abuse if you had to beat on it. I quenched the cutting edge in salt water and drew the back and handle softer so it will bend instead of break.
To carry on with the Apocalypse theme I decided to make the sheath out of what was in my junk leather pile, a pair of yard sale ladies Justin boots.

So here is it and it’s little buddy in their new pants.

The handle is wrapped in hemp cord and dipped in varnish. The little buddy knife is chisel edged from a file.

Everything except the rawhide throat, some harness stitching cord and an old roller buckle came from the boots

A little workout in the charcoal pile. It weighs over two pounds, chops nicely and it will still work when the bullets run out. Apocalypse is looking brighter……..Randy

I like it! Super primitive with a nice touch of post-apocalyptic flair!

My wife said that the knife looked like a murder weapon and the sheath looked like human skin.
I think it looks ok :D

Looks like what the newest Rambo knife should have looked like. The little pocket looks like it was stiched by Eli himself.
Pretty cool blade!

That’s a beautiful piece of expressionist art. It has a lot of character. I think it would be right at home strapped to Mad Max’s back. I’d love to see a close up of that little buddy knife.

Whenever I see that you posted something on here, it feels like opening a present, when I click on your post, I’m always amazed and surprised.

P. S. that monster would make Rambo’s knife cry in fear

I love the black forged mark and the old used up leatherboot sheath Randy!

The little knife looks sharp!

Here's my coconut cleaver forged from spring steel:

I like it! I don't have the facilities to do work like that living in a city of 600,000. Therefore, I bought a Cold Steel Bushman which has most of the same attributes. I closed the bottom of the handle with part of a wine bottle cork and capped it with a cork I fashioned from a thermos cork. I carry survival supplies in the handle until I need to remove them to attach a shaft for a spear. I also wrapped 550 cord around the sheath.

That is very very ''cool'' LOL. one of those things that you just like on a primitive level... I bet you could sell the heck out of those if you wanted to, I even like the ''use what you got'' sheath.

Now those are some awesome pieces. The fact that you just came up with it on a whim is awesome as well. Great job.

Here's the little knife. It was a evolution one. I was thinking of adding a firesteel on a thong and I kept reaching for my pocket Kiridashi to make cuts on the leather so I stuck the firesteel in the vice and filed a chisel grind on it. Sort of a mini Ulu. Tough filing considering it was already hardened. Now you can start a fire, have a small slicer and sharpen the large chopper with the file edge.

I filed down a nail and used it as an awl and lashed the pouch to the sheath. Creech wrote " In the days after the rapture, desperation and ingenuity will be your savior "

Thanks Edwood, that one makes my millennium.
Appreciate all the responses, I have been heavily in to re-using for a long time and it still amazes me what can be made from stuff the masses throw away......Randy

Sheath made out of a boot. Awesome.
If this is the outcome of your terror, I say you should watch scary movies more often. At least watch the news.

Did you make that Kiridashi, and from a file? Looks a bit like the one I got from Scott Rousch...

Yes I made that one. I have been trading and giving them away for a couple of years. Probably got the idea from Scott, he is a great craftsman. I carry one in my pocket all the time. The guys at work throw worn out files on my bench instead of the trash so I make firestarters and pocket Kiradashi's out of them.
Scotts look a lot better than mine.......Randy

My wife told me to tell you see what fear can do,nice piece though oh and she also said the sheath does looks like somebody's skin.

Not fear Mr. Jamaljahda, just having the mindset of being prepared. I have muzzleloading guns, can make black powder and shot and would eat the dog if I had to. In America we live in the illusion of safety , but what will happen when the power goes off or the computer doesn't connect to the internet. Chaos. Most of the world has been living in fear for years, I merely choose not to......Be well.....Randy

Yur killin me Randy "and would eat the dog if I had to".
Have you got a good eatin breed??? ;-))))))))
That's a hell of a great looking primitive set you made, love the look, the sheath is killer. Cheers bud.
Regards

Robin

Mastiffs Robin, 350 lbs between two. But a three lb. Yorkshire Terrier rules the roost. Thanks for the kind words....Randy
