Apocalypse Chopper

Lotsa meat goes IN those Mastiffs. Laziest things on earth, this afternoon I had to drive around one asleep on the driveway......Randy

They ARE big dogs and big dogs tend to lie around a lot ;-)) and they're hard to move. I used to breed Dobermans of german bloodlines, seriously hyper dogs ;-(( German Dobes are pretty thin but that didn't stop the chinese guy from the local restaurant from telling me how good she would be to eat ;-)))
I really really like the things you make bud.

Nice looking package.....Good use of an old boot......Sweet chopper !

Hey Randy, what's the HT like on the kiridashi? Is there enough hardness to still use as a file, or is the whole thing too soft? I like the idea of having a mulituse tool. A file with a sharpened end sounds like it could be handy in a pinch, or for touching up a blade after a morning of Zombie chopping.

Thanks Dusty and Mr. Fancyman (Nice Gilly) It's one of my favorites also, I was chopping charcoal with it last night. Mr. Foxx, I anneal files a handful at a time and hot cut and hot file the bevel then quench the whole thing in water and temper it straw so if you drop it she will not shatter. It is hard enough to flint a spark on the side, I have used mine to start fires and straighten the edge on my big choppers. I suppose you could break a file and grind the bevel slowly, keeping it cool to retain the original hardness, but I don't use grinders ...Randy

Mr. Spartan Saint, this one has gone to to the swamps of Va., but I just acquired several sets of 1946 Diamond Reo leaf springs, I'm making more......Randy

How did you come by the bush-hog blade? Did you stop by a farm tractor store and ask?

I've been thinking about trying to turn an old lawn mower-blade into a knife but a bush-hog would be the ultimate.

Randy, you sound like many of the guys I grew up with in the Piedmont. Especially, the "I would eat the dog if I had to". Do you know where Randleman is?

Thanks Grim
PBJ, I restored houses for years and still stay in touch with the Historical people so if an old house or barn is being demolished for new plastic houses they call and I get the chance to look threw it. Plus as you said tractor stores and lawnmower stores usually throw away blades that are bent and will usually give them away by the boxful. They have to pay to get rid of them so everybody benefits. Useful steel is everywhere, machine shops and leaf spring shops always have piles around back, I carry a 'hawk and a knife in my car all the time just for trading. If you see machine shop guys throwing a 'hawk at lunchtime in central 'Carolina, I've been there. One thing, a bush hog blade is very thick, get your hammering arm ready.
HandAxeProMan, I'm about 8 miles away in Cedar Falls. I drive threw the "Kings" city twice a day........Randy
