Apocalypto & Mel Gibson

again, lots of artists (actors, directors, etc.) are nuts. so be it.

Apocalypto was awesome. drops you into an alien world and you feel right at home. very glad for the subtitles. i'd see it again w/o subtitles, you wouldn't lose much at all. nice to see the use of the body modification/tattoos/piercings that were common to the culture. some have complained about the violence in the film. i laughed out loud at this. the body count is pretty darn low compared to most 'action' movies and if people had been killed with guns instead of bows/knives/spears, no one would have a problem, and that's what's sad.

one thing i talked over with friends was that the movie -really- makes you feel out of shape. makes you want to get out and RUN! :)
 
My take exactly above about violence in film. Just like a bad radio station, don't watch or listen to it, but for those of us who see it contextually and for what it is, a visual art form that one person has made, leave us/me out of it.

Take Private Ryan for example. Lots of violence, but appropriate. A great movie.
 
good bit of man ass and discovery channel style tits tho... i agree gibson may be a kook but most of those hollywood boys are and he does make a fine film in my opinion with the exception of the passion. that was just a bloodbath, woulda done better to center more on Jesus' teachings rather than beatings.

i think if apocolypto was dubbed it woulda came out like crap, modern Mexican accents in english just wouldn't have had that feel and wouldn't be as immersed in the culture.

I think the point of that film was to help the viewer to more appreciate Christ's suffering and the brutality of it was necessary to that task. There are other films of excellent quality done over the years that have centered on His teachings, but none have ever offered quite the perspective of 'The Passion of the Christ.' The blood and brutality are part of His story and, although terribly difficult to view, do not go away by ignoring it.

Same here, I had Kung Fu Hustle in both dubbed and non-dubbed version and I liked the Chinese version better w/ subtitles. The English dub sounded like some bored people reading a script.

When I was pre teen boy, I saw the undubbed Das Boot (The Boat) a German movie about a German WWII submarine crew. It was subtitled, well made and even I was able to handle reading it. Like some have said before, it takes a couple minutes, but the mind adapts and you don't even notice you are reading subtitles after a bit. Oh yeah, they re-released some years later in dubbed English and it sucked...dubbing usually does. :grumpy:

The only time subtitles suck is when they use white letters during a snow storm for example...:rolleyes:

That is the ONLY way to see Das Boot!!!! When the director's cut came out on VHS, it was in English, but what my brother and I discovered was that the alternate German language track on the DVD was the original dialogue track, including the addtional scenes......never watched it in English!!!!:thumbup: :D The only good thing about the dubbed version was that the actors all spoke English so they used them to dub it. I can't imagine watching Kung Fu Hustle dubbed. I never even tried to watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragonin anything other than Mandarin. Now the BEST joke dubbing, etc I have seen was that crazy comedy movie where the cut Gary Cole into scenes from bad kung fu movies...can't remember the name of the film right now.
 
After having watched so many subtitled movies over the past 25 years, I prefer them to dubbed versions every time. I have family members who have seen some of my DVDs that are subtitled and many of them say although they like the film(s), they hate it being subtitled, "because when I'm reading I'm missing the action"! But then the same people who say that will guffaw and criticize if the movie were dubbed over ("hey, his mouth isn't in sync with what he's saying!").

It's true; after awhile, you become so used to subtitles that you forget you're reading them and don't miss anything in the movie. Plus, these types of movies give the opportunity to watch something different from the typical, formulaic crap turned out by Hollywood. A lot of people put down movies because they don't have "big stars", but to me, if I see people that are too famous and too much in the news, like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise in a film, I don't see them as the character, I just see them as Pitt or Cruise pretending for a scene, then retiring to their air-conditioned, fully-stocked set trailer. It's true of every film, but oftentimes for myself, talented unknowns (at least in the U.S.) at acting can be more convincing than most prima donna celebs.
 
Subtitles are going to be the norm in america soon, as more people here don't speak or understand english, but Gibson seems to do it well, at least it is not obtrusive.
 
Yep, I saw it over the weekend and it was an incredible moive. Way better than all of the garbage that's been seeping out of Hollywood recently. It was well-acted, well-directed, and it didn't have over-the-top special effects. I honestly didn't even consider the fact that I hadn't heard an English voice during the movie nor the fact that I was reading subtitles. It was so much more believable because of the subtitles (as opposed to having the actors speak in English or dubbing the movie).
 
Basically another Last of the Mohicans. Hollywood people still have no brains or original thinking. Thats why they go into politics. Isn't saying much for us cause we go ahead and vote for them.

It is not remotely similar- I take it you did not watch the film?

Exactly. I like LOTM and I've watched it maybe five times, now, but this movie has absolutely nothing in common with LOTM. Well, the folks were running around in the woods a lot.:rolleyes: Strange take, huh?

And there was a waterfall in each movie. :D I also like LOTM a lot.
 
It's still not on theaters in Mexico, should come out soon though.

As I mentioned I was there at the time they were filming, I took these pictures of the waterfall, the whole area is very nice.
