Apple question

I am not lying. I was talking about their towers. Nothing I said was untrue. But hey, why let reality get in the way of your fanboyism?

"I looked at mac PC's, and they Start at $2500 with no upgrades. You can get an equivalent windows machine for much less. There are lots of companies making windows based gaming rigs, and you can even make one yourself. That is the key difference- You can't buy a Mac from anyone but Mac. . . they sell based on lies ("Mac vs PC", etc.), and a carefully cultivated image, to a niche market. . . that is why they have such a tiny market share. They would not exist without the popularity of their iPods."

I rest my case. If that isn't fanboyism, what is?

Making personal attacks on people because they do not share your irrational love for the object(s) of your affection is the very definition of fanboyism.

My statement does not become less true just because you don't like it.

Let me guess. . . the Dell is running Vista? :barf:

Doesn't matter if you're running Vista or XP. Point is most applications (and I'm using Adobe apps as a baseline here) run faster under Apple OS then Windows.

Though I will agree with the :barf: Vista remark.

It is running Vista but so are most new PCs being sold right now. I could load up XP and I'm confident the Mac would still win albeit not by as much. The Mac OS X does a much better job of using the available hardware resources than any Microsoft OS to date. I do get annoyed with Macs in regards to everything after the sale being so expensive. Repairs and service for Macs approach levels of idiocy when put side by side to comparable PC repairs. I like Macs and I like PCs. Deciding on which one I wanted was too difficult so in the end I had to settle for one of each. :p

The rest of my family has been using Macs for years. After my Toshiba laptop bit the big one at the end of 2006, I bought a 24 inch iMac. It hasn't needed anything in the way of repair, etc for 2 1/2 years and hasn't skipped a beat. By contrast, we bought my son one of the hot rod Dell laptops because he wanted to play games, etc. He made the mistake of loading Vista a while back. He now has a Mac book and couldn't be happier. Linix may be the be all end all for you computer geeks, but for the vast majority of us poor schlubs who don;t know Linux from dryer lint, we expect the OS that comes with the computer to work as advertised, thank you very much!!!

I would argue that you can't get a comparable windows box because it's not from Apple.

I have had *zero* problems CS wise with Apple, and couldn't count on both hands and feet how many times I've been shuffled between Dell, Microsoft, and HP working out a software problem.

QUOTE]

I second the CS is great! I did not know much about Apple till my girlfriend bought one. Her causen had problems with the old plastic type laptop chipping and they fixed it, upgraded the software and did the same for my gf without charge. And you dicide what software you want to have on it when you buy it. On that I would recommend an apple for working and for visual (photo editing etc and movie making that my gf does as a hobby) as for games, don't know. As long as I can play my madden and rugby, no problem so far!)

Dang it! I thought I had it worked out then you threw me a curve.

Do you know what games your son plays and is he able to set all the graphics options to "Max" on his Mac book?

Adobe apps do have a bit of a learning curve, but once you get over that, they are pretty easy. iPhoto has some built in photo editing that should take care of whatever basic tasks you need done.

If you're going to play wow on a Mac, I'd recommend starting out with the tower (that $2.5k Mac Pro tower, yes) and sticking at least 8gb of ram in it. :D

Course, for simplicities sake, just get a Alienware box.

For $2,500 I can get a screamer from Alienware.

Thanks everyone, I was able to gain some useful info out this.

Off to comp specs.

I can only assume you are addressing the Apple Marketing team.

Total ignorance. You obviously have never used a Mac for any length of time. When I read comments such as yours, I just laugh. It's not about 'fanboyism' it's about truth. I've used PCs for much longer than Macs and Windows sucks - end of story. I'm sorry but Macs are superior in virtually every way. Apple designs great products. Look at the iPhone, Apple walked into an arena full of cell-phone players and they handed-their-asses-to-them overnight - with their first cell-phone product. Apple takes tremendous care when designing products - they want positive user experience - not frustration. The hardware is NOT identical ... sure there are similar parts and sources, but there are major differences. Especially in the quality department and with testing that hardware against the OS and 3rd party software.

I used a PC for the majority of my life [and at work], so I consider myself an authority on both. I used to think Windows was *awesome*. I'm not just an email/web user, I use my computer for CAD and graphics so I need a kick-ass machine. In 2003, I decided to switch to a Mac - whoa ... BIG difference. Within a week, I knew I would never touch Windows again - at least for my personal computing.

1] What makes the Mac so much different than a Windows box is this: the hardware and software work seamlessly together. All of Apple's Mac configurations are tested with the OS [OSX] so there is no BS. The Mac just works - period. Buy a new printer, camera, scanner or other peripheral - on a Mac, plug it in and go to work. On a PC - drivers baby ... and make sure you update them. It's impossible to test every possible config on a PC - because nothing is controlled.

2] Viruses - No one runs anti-virus software on Macs - no one. Why, there is no need. Someone mentioned a trojan worm for Macs above - where ... prove it. Macs aren't impervious to virus', but they aren't like the Swiss Cheese that Windows is. Perhaps someday we'll face one, but not yet. I know a lot of Mac users and I have never come across someone who's been affected ... this would be 'headline' news for sure. The backbone of the Mac OS is UNIX-based, which is very robust and tough to 'break into'. This is why UNIX is used the world over by banks and defense departments.

3] More expensive - you betcha. But you do get what you pay for. The reliability, incredible performance, and frustration-less computing is worth the added cost - to me. Plus, no one can argue that a Mac is a gorgeous piece of hardware. Take the beautiful aluminum unibody MacBook/MacBook Pro and compare that to the plastic Dell you paid $300 less for that's heavier than a cinder block - still think you got a good deal? Similarly spec'd Apple and Windows machines are often very close in price. Do your homework.

4] I have convinced at least 40+ people to switch, even some super die-hard Windows users - NONE have considered their move a mistake and NONE have gone back.

5] At work, I used a PC ... these were some supposedly sweet machines with tons of processing power etc. They were total garbage. Not only were we running Win.XP of 2001 vintage [b/c Vista is crap], but there were constantly problems. These so called 'workstations' were terrible - they maxed-out at 3GB for RAM whereas my 4 yo Mac could handle 16 GB. My PC's high-end graphics card would constantly distort the picture when pushing high-res graphics. It was a nightmare around every corner. There were even crazy problems like when I stuck a USB key into the USB port on the front, the machine would reboot [this was repeatable on other machines too]. I *hated* working on these PCs ... the hardware was beyond cheap crap, the OS was dated. I cannot believe the majority of the world still uses Windows - it's unfathomable. Mac OSX is so elegant and efficient and intuitive ... it's so sophisticated it's dead simple and your productivity will skyrocket.

6] Need PC programs from time to time? Or games that aren't on OSX yet. Run Windows from 'Boot-Camp' for zero performance hits or from 'Parallels' within OSX. Easy. In Parallels, Windows-based apps will load right into the OSX environment. Make sure you have anti-virus software when running Windows though!

Go to an Apple store and take a look for yourself - you WILL NOT look back.

Macs are simply better machines and they currently have a waaaaay better OS. They're not for everyone, but 98% of the computing public would be much better off on the Mac platform. Do believe the hype - it's legit.

Think of Windows as CRKT and Apple as Sebenza/Strider/Hinder/ZT. :D

Certainly a mixed message, per morrowj the Apple runs the same program faster even with similar spec'd equip, which is a perk. However it seemed like for gaming (only reason I need an upgrade) mostly the favor is towards Windows.

The hardware is apparently irrelevant since folks stated it mostly can be the same. Especially if I got rambunctious and built my own, I could have high grade equipment throughout a windows machine for less cost, but sans Apple customer service.

I was trying to put it in a bit of knife perspective. :o Guess it wasn't the best job.

The hardware isn't all the same. Intel Core 2 Duo is a far cry from AMD/Intel Celeron junk the put in most computers. All new (late 08/09) model Apple computers have NVIDIA GeForce 9400M cards for improved graphics and higher speed ram for faster processing.

Apple computers are more expensive from the baseline, but they're better. It's like having mandatory S30V and Ti on a Sebenza. You can't get one with Aluminum or AUS-8.

I have near identical laptops (hardware). One is dual-core Dell and the other a dual-core Macbook Pro. I won't bore with the spec details as they basically identical. You can compare hardware all day long..how the OS functions on the hardware is equally as important as the hardware itself. I can set my Dell next to my Macbook Pro running the same version of Photoshop (CS3) and run a resource intensive task (gaussian blur) against the exact same .tiff file. The Mac destroys the Dell. There is no comparison. Open up a movie file on your PC and drag it quickly around your desktop...does the video or audio start to chop? Try it on a Mac. To compare PCs to Macs based simply on hardware and not OS performance on said hardware is a bit like covering one eye when trying to look through binoculars.

This has been my exact experience with my Macbook and Dell. I would add that my Dell uses XP, and it has many more problems than Mac OS.

Also, both computers have broke in the past three years. I had to pay someone to fix my Dell, a lot of money. I brought my Macbook to the Apple store, where they fixed it, same day, for free.

My girlfriend and most of my family uses PC's. Personal preference, I guess, I don't try to change their minds. They like it, they prefer it, it works for them, why worry about it?

I don't have any issues with XP, once I figured out virus protection (step 1 kill symantec). From what everyone says, I have to buy a copy of windows anyhow for my number 1 reason to buy a new computer...i.e. online computer games, that and the fact that peripherals such as a good gaming mouse and keyboard won't work on a Mac will likely kill the deal. I wouldn't enjoy any of the benefits of the apple OS and suffer the retarded mouse and keyboard.

What keyboard/mouse combo isn't mac compatible? I've had great success with all Logitech hardware.

I don't think it is fair to compare a $400 laptop with lower-end processors to machines running high-end processors. It only makes the discussion even more confusing.

Zen,

If you're going to do some serious gaming, I wouldn't get a Mac. In the end, PCs do gaming better and with less hassle. Take a lot at www.cyberpowerpc.com.

I switched to Mac about a year ago. I had a pretty limited budget, so I went with the 13 inch macbook and 20 inch imac. I have been very happy with both. I run MS office for mac. I do not run a windows environment, but those that do seem please with the result.
I have noticed two things really; leopard is pretty intuitive and the system is more stable. I was an experienced PC user and able to manage patches, updates, etc. However, i did get tired of some of the battles.

There are fewer programs available for mac, so be prepared for that. The only MMO I play is WOW, so no help there.

Last time i read any figures, Apple had almost doubled their share of "personal computer" market over the last few years from around 6% to 11%. Now, a lot of that may have been because of customer's experience with other Apple products like iPod, but it does say that there are a lot of new Apple users who are not hardcore. long time "fanboys." I suspect a substantial portion of this growth might have been due to "Vista backlash"
