April 2023 Buck of the Month Granadillo Handled Brass Bolster 113 Skinner w/ S45VN Blade

When I first saw the picture I didn't get excited about it.
Tho when you read what it is, it's a nice knife.

First impression won out however.
If it were a Gen5 instead I'd have purchased one.

I like the sheath.
Is it a darker color than the typical distressed sheath.....?

I'm underwhelmed... it's really not THAT different from a customized regular 113. Better steel better wood, better sheath... But twice the price. No thanks.

My Tom Bullard fixed blade seems like basically the same thing but better, anyway!

Is s45 and s30 that important to buck collectors? I don't see anyone framing this 113 and mounting it on a wall. Not that it isn't a nice or high quality, but to the average eye, it looks like a wood handled knife. My point is, these will most likely be used, or stored under the bed. What was the need for s45, that would require the price jump? When I am outdoors, I like a carbon knife, that is easy to clean and sharpen. I have never had to strike a flint with a knife, but I use knives on ferrous rods all the time. Even my most abused knives don't have rust on them. What is the need for s45 when you offer all your knives in s30 or better? Seems to me like high end steels are more for the fidget spinner crowd.

Pretty sure a Vantage will be the next "stealth drop."
I hope they keep the price more in the $150 range or less. I don't know if it matters to them if they sell out immediately or not. They eventually will sell out, so they will get the money. So the cost will be storage space and time.

As a collector, I like to have different examples of the handle materials, steels, blade types, etc. So I'm not against offering a high premium steel to collectors. As a user, it seems the only thing I'm successful at is cutting myself. Yesterday, cut my pinky finger with a recent acquisition.

Edit: I actually don't hunt, fish, camp, prep, or do anything else that actually requires serious uses of knives besides eating. I do think knives are cool though.

I think that the BOTM offerings create a HUGE stir for their publicity. A growing number of people have been chasing the white horse that is BOTM. That will wear off after a few more of these slow burners. I've always been ok missing out on a fast seller. It puts a little pride and extra value behind the ones i do get.
Plus buck knows that a very good portion of the knives they sell are collectors items. A knife that sells fast shows demand. Knives that are in demand can be charged a premium, so I think that sellout time to them is just as important as price. At least it should be.

I don't think this one is a good 'flipper' unlike the best of the BOTM knives. No meat on this bone at all! But I'm not worried..I think Buck will come through with some really special BOTM later this year. Buck understands a lot of it's more expensive knives are bought by collectors and NOT Walmart shoppers and are a important part of the Buck brand. I believe a lot of management takes pride in a BOTM just flying out the door. Even the best hitters strike out, walk, or just get a single when they step up to the plate. But if this was around $150.00 it would be a double instead of a walk..

I don't even see for sale that often some of the older BOTM 112s. Seems like they're safely tucked away in people's collections.

The other thing I need to remind myself is that even with a limited run of 500 knives...

...they still have to make 500 of them!

I can't sit here and fairly make a comparison to a custom knife or something where only a handful were made.

It's got to be a tough balance between making a limited run or a unique knife, while still allowing it to be to scale.

Doesn't seem to be a limit on the amount of knives you can buy for the April BOTM ?

March BOTM shows "You are only allowed to order a maximum of 10 . . ." when adding a large quantity. April BOTM doesn't trigger any notification when adding various quantities up to 299 (the current number still for sale).
