just picked up a pair of troy industries flip up sights for my ar15. i love them but i think id like a red dot too. i like the eotech but theres a bunch of different modles what do you guys think?

Everytime I start looking at new red dots I end up thinking how many more knives I can buy with the money. So I'm still just using irons too. lol.

I will be interested in seeing whats suggested.

I am no help on this one......I'm an iron sight/AK-47 kinda guy.

I do have an AR......but I use the iron sights with that too. My shootin buddy just bought a pretty nice red dot sight the other day.....it looked and functioned nice....I'll ask what it is and let you know.

picked up one of the Trijicon Reflex for my AR. Recommended by my Bro in laws...like the idea of never farting around with batteries again. Did the 25 yard sight-in, and banging on out to 200 yards so far. Only issue is it's a 1x, and my eyesight ain't what it used to be past that range. But with a 16" barrel, don't expect to be ranging more than 300 yards for my plinking.

Here is what I've used: Acog TA01 good, TA31 Better. Great for clear optics, good night sight and on the TA31, you have the BAC system which always keeps your chevron bright red very $$$$$$$$$$$$
EOTECH 512 always get the AA battery model for availability and longevity works great, super rugged
AIMPOINT M68, new technology has allowed this AA battery model to actually work for 80,000 hours, .. even on regular level it can go for a longer time that any other options,
The ACOG Reflex2 is also tritium, and is a great heads up optic in a small package
one that I am wanting to pick up and try out is the Vortex strikefire or sparc. these are a bit cheaper and yet I've heard very good feedback on both...
good luck on your pick, go for the bit high quality, there are a lot of cheapies on the market, but reliability is the key, especially if you are staking your life on your optics. .also> get quick release mounts. Vortex makes a good one, as well as ARMS, Larue

i looked at a vortex, they dont look bad but ive read mixed reviews. but for the price compaired to EOtech and Acog i guess i cant complain.

Aimpoint micro is the only way to go. Eotechs (when ran hard) fall of the gun... Yep fall off, not all of them but more than should. They also only run about 900 hours, so forget to turn it off and they day your life is on the line.....its battery is out. My friend has left his micro on high for 2 and a half years now and its still on and running like a champ. Aimpoint also works with your natural tunnel vision (you will have it) Acogs are to much power for cqb...

Another vote for the Aimpoint Micto T-1:thumbup: Two of the great features for me are the ruggedness, and the extreme weather resistance. Had one and sold it with one of my pea shooters, but I to am in the market for another and I'm going after the Micro T-1...

Have you checked out "Sight Mark"? A buddy of mine got one for around $100 and he loves it! I can't recommend it myself (i don't recommend any sight that requires batteries) but thought I'd throw it out there as an option for you.

I set mine up with an EOTech and Flip up Irons I havent had any problems hitting targets...Fast target aquisition, looks to be built like a tank. Then again im only shooting at paint cans and saw blades

I've got the standard BUIS flip up irons, but also a Nightforce 2.5-10 in a LaRue QD mount that I really like. I might also consider some form of Trijicon ACOG or Aimpoint in the future.

I run an Aimpoint M3 with the ARMS M68 quick release mount, I owned an EOTech 512 and sold it, they are good it just wasnt for me, also owned Aimpoint Micro T1, awesome red dot for its size.
One other thing to remember is most red dots have different MOA (minute of angle) sized dots, ex. 1 MOA is 1" covered of your target at 100 yards.
The Aimpoint I got is 2 MOA so it only covers 2" of the target at 100 yards, It is awesome for pinpoint accuracy. You really have to check some out to get a feel for what works for you.
Trijicons are expensive but worth every penny. A friend of mine runs one on his ACR and it was the best optic I have ever shot through, it is bright and the clarity was amazing.
I highly recommend quick release rings incase your optics fail so you can switch to irons fast.
You will want to get a good name for the rings/mount like ARMS or Larue or others, only because they pretty much guarantee repeat zero after you remove the optics.
I have tested it with the larue and arms mounts I own and they are both dead on after removal/reinstall.
Best of luck on your search Beef and get the best optics you can.

Nightforce are top of the line.. but pricey.. a 1-4 with a dot is nice on an AR. You can get quick hits and also precision to about 500yds. Look at the Vortex PST. As far as Eotech.. I would go with one of the XPS2 versions.. the XPS3 is if you plan to use nightvision.

Also, Nightforce scopes is heavy.

The new(ish) Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic is worth looking at. Around $400 for what basically amounts to a Comp M2 (NV compatible) with an included mount.

The EOTechs are much better now. Haven't heard anything about the newer models falling off of rails. Also, they automatically shut off after 4 or 8 hours, depending on which button you hit, to save the battery.

I have mine set up with an LMT rear sight: complete functionality of an A2 carry handle sight, very robust, don't have to worry about popping anything up, NOT a back-up sight...and an EOTech EXPS2 - has one CR123 battery (you can get them in 711s nowadays) mounted transversely to prevent another former EOTech issue - compression of the battery contact spring.
