Are bayonets supposed to be sharp?

Generally the "rules" around a bayonet revolve around adding serrations or other changes that increase injury or wounds.

Military leadership doesn't always like soldiers modifying their equipment as that leads to a lack of uniformity and there are aa couple soldiers who wind up sharpening the bayonets down to a wafer since they found out the motor pool has a bench grinder.

Zulu, What reference are you using to say "Rule of war-bayonets cannot be sharpened"? Urban legend, and not true. Look at the M9 and the USMC bayonet which come sharp, and do not for an instance think this was not vetted by the JAG (Judge Advocate General) the military lawyers. John

Maybe this one goes back to officers of cavalry units considering it ungentlemanly to sharpen their sabers, but for all I know that's a myth too.
