Are Busse knives the only high end production knives actually being used?

I have a Fehrman First Strike that has been used quite severely, but its a first generation and people lose their minds when they see it so no, no vids, but they do get used hard.

I've also had a few Striders through the used category, my AR is currently in the rotation and has been for quite some time. But again people tend to lose their minds so no vids.

The troll attracting properties of both those names is uncanny

oh, and while I'm here, batonning a knife through another knife proves nothing but that you now have a really expensive tool being destroyed by another really expensive tool.

WTF happened to all those? Very few are still on line.

I think someplace like alloutdoor.com acquired the rights to some of them. The others do appear to be MIA. There is also a very recent destruction test of a Nathan Carothers Field Knife. It's a tremendous knife and an incredible value at its price point.

post a pic of it. I'd love to see it.

Miller Brothers Blades has a YouTube channel.

They do great things with Zwear and 3V.

I asked once about their heat treat protocol, not for anything proprietary--more of a general question regarding the goals they strive for. I was emailed back that they "manufacture all their blades to withstand the most extreme conditions." I guess they don't want to give any hints...not that I blame them; some of the best knifemakers, including Busse and MBB, are very tight-lipped about heat treatment information. I was interested for intellectual reasons because I like learning about the subtle differences in the same steels from different makers.

So far, Busse and Miller Bros. are the only two blades that I currently own that can withstand the types of things I have seen them subjected to. And still fulfill their functions as knives after:D

If that is the video I am thinking of, I could not believe how far that blade was bent. I am almost wondering if someone didn't give him S7 instead. Nathan has a great HT to go with a great steel. His designs are also functional and beautiful.

Some people struggle with the concert of "value" of what it means, perhaps struggle is the wrong word, everyone's definition is perhaps different. I kind of saw it when I was away recently but I will get back to that. I will use my FFBM as an example. It cost me $700US plus a sheath and shipping to here, so well over $800US = over $1K Aussie at the time. What is the "value" of that $1K to me... the "on paper value" ? In that if I wanted I could convert it to $1K in cash money that could then become something else ??? Or, as it is in my case, the "value" of a tool that will not fail me when I need it, that can perform the tasks I require it to over and over again with negligible wear or damage ? I most certainly have more knives that I can EVER use up (or perhaps even use) but I like knives, just because they are knives. So it is then a case of each person striking that happy medium about what it is they value about the knife. I own few pretty knives, I happened into a couple of Busses that are pretty (and I got a deal on them) so I have them, I would not have generally sought them out. First and foremost their value to me is in their potential (realised or not) as tools.

So to my trip away.... for giggles I was splitting some wood at the fireplace with a Godson, he was grinning as I used the FFBM and took his turn, that look is precious I have to tell you. He then asked what it was worth and nearly dropped it when I told him. But I explained that like his tools (apprentice carpenter) the value was in the tasks it could perform over and over not the $ figure assigned to it, each time it successfully completed a task I had received a return on my investment....so get back to that wood splitting.... ;)

Ok, so I look around and all I see is videos and pics of Busses taking hard core use. Where are all the hard use videos of other high end production knives. Where are the videos of Randalls being used? Where are the videos of Strider and Mad dogs being used, ever? Hard use videos of Bark river? I am not talking about a little review video of someone fondling a knife. I am talking about actual hard use chopping and batoning. When was the last time you saw a video of a san mai trailmaster being used hard. Or how about a falkniven thor or any large nl series? So lets set a $300 or more value. Show me vids. Can we find vids.

Here's one by Rob Stanley beating on a FBM & a san mai Trailmaster. He had probs with Cold Steel's handle, but liked the blade...

First thing that jumped to mind for me was Kabar.... I have not looked for a clip though.

Busse would surely dominate here I reckon.

Saw a few Dan Keffeler videos out there and his blades as as expensive or more so than Busse

I have a Randall Mod 18 that I've carried hiking/backpacking/hunting since the 90's. I use it lightly, for cutting tasks, not for hacking stuff up. But I do know people who use Randalls. IMHO there are basic user models and fancier collector models not intended for use.

I once contacted Rick Bowles, the famous scrimshander. I asked if he would prefer people collect or actually use his knives. He said if someone used one of his art knives he'd never do another piece for them again. So yes, i think there are some really good knives that are not intended for use.

Dan Kefferler's blades are awesome and so is his youtube channel. He definitely puts them through rough use but not abuse in his vids. His Super Assassin vids are jaw dropping

I've said this before...

Busse knives and their warranty is like Deciding to buy a corvette with cash. You go to the dealership, pick out the one you want, pay the salesman, and right before you drive away, the dealership manager walks up and says...."if you like it and want to really test her out, there is a demolition derby right down the road...if you tear her up, we'll fix her for free or give you another, or what you spent towards a different one"

Then you win that derby, while only getting a few scratches in the paint.

I know right.

I do stupid stuff sometimes ;)

Put sometimes you just do it so others do not have to.

I think it's hard to find a direct competitor to busse combat. I mean for your question, which manufacturers have $300+ knives that are .25"- .33" thick?

There are a ton of videos of knives being used and abused but I don't think they're in the same class. Sorry I don't have links but I just watched a guy try to kill a cold steel Crk 3v and I'm a firm believer that no "use" will hurt that knife.

On the flip side, I don't chop with my knives. 90% of what I use them for seems to be fire prep. For that I have a lot of knives that I use and I generally use them more than busses.

The only knives I can think of where we might find some hard use in production models might be the .25" stuff from tops or BK
