Are Emerson Knives as Good as they say

As good as they say? Not even close.

The whole Emerson 'thing' seems to be about the man, not the knife. The man and his tough guy image. I saw EE at the last blade show, and I think his tough guy days are far behind him.

Sure, a super duper lifetime warranty, but that does not mean the knife will not fail, it only means it will be fixed or replaced.

Personally, I think Benchmade is far superior.

Ernie's abilities and his credentials will never be in question from me. Don't let his grey/white hair and his huge smile fool ya , if it is time to throw down , I am sure there is a ton of fight left in him.

I own/have owned: Auto Commander (Kershaw collaboration), CQC-7W, BM970, CQC-8, Super CQC-8, CQC-13, CQC-14, A-100, Combat Karambit. I have had nothing but positive experiences with every one of these knives.

I've had the unique privilege of having both the Benchmade CQC-7 (BM970) and the Emerson CQC-7 (mine is a 2010 model). In every aspect my Emerson is superior, IMO and experience.

I recommend Emerson, that's been my experience.

I only have one Emerson, and I dig it (the Horseman). Pretty solid blade.

However it perpetually makes a squeaky noise when opening and closing which I can't seem to remedy. I think it's from the detent making contact with the blade. That and I wish the detent was stronger.

I have a 2004 build CQC11 and it has everything good people say about an Emerson knife. After lurking for a while, and only registering recently, I would take STRs word as gospel.

I respect STR very much and he has many valuable insights. However, I am hesitant to take anyone's word as gospel and prefer to go with what I know for certain is true.

For the price, I'd have expected phosphor bronze instead of teflon washers.

many high-end knives have teflon washers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Rick Hinder and Tom Mayo both use teflon washers in their folders. I don't think I actually have any knives right now that don't have teflon washers, other than those with the PB bushing also.

My mistake. The Emersons are actually nylatron. For some reason though, they're nowhere near as smooth out of the box as my knives with PB washers. Guess it's all about tolerances.

I'm in Australia and wanted an Emerson 7 for the last couple of years. After reading about the problems I’m now very hesitant to pay out the (to me) big bucks to take a chance I get a good one , as its not so easy to send it in for work or repair because of the cost of shipping and our customs. Shore I can buy one here but at twice to cost but from what I’m reading I don't know if when I buy a new one that it will need to be sent for work even before I use it. That’s the feeling I'm getting from this thread and I do thank every one for being honest about it because who wants that kind of a problem with a new knife even if there is a chance of it happening .As one guy put it I don’t want to go into a lottery.

As I stated earlier, I bought a CQC-10 last year based upon a recommendation from a "professional" - seriously (Force Recon). For $150 I would like to see a little better steel and I will tell you I do not like a chisel grind - at all. It is heavy, fits my hand very well, the lock is solid, the blade is centered and tight, the wave works very well, it opens very smoothly, in fact, the smoothest I have ever owned, and the fit and finish is excellent. Its like we are talking about a different EKI or something. This is a hell of a nice knife. I am sorry some of my fellow knife brothers have had so many problems. Its starting to sound like the lottery reference is pretty accurate. I'm glad I "won" mine. Having said that, I have had all matter of Spydercos since the early 90's and love them. I am going to sell mine to fund a Manix 2 plain edge in XHP.

I purchased my first Emerson about 5 months ago, and now I have 5 of them with another one coming as we speak.

And I'm not blind.

Can anyone explain the implications here?

I started out with a CQC-15. I've had just about every production Emerson out there and my favorites are the ones I still have. CQC-15, 10, 7, Mini 7, 8, Commander, Raven SFS.
Yeah, I guess I am a fan..
