Are Emerson Knives geting heavier?

Cool. Good to know. Edited that out to keep my facts straight!

Pilots, yep, good to have them. Weight might be more of an issue there, too. But overgeneralized opinions preached as expertise from the pulpit of youtube, well, there's the real problem. ;)

Cool.

Well in any event I think we've hijacked this thread enough. LOL.

So, to that end,

Are Emerson Knives geting heavier?

I have no idea, and don't really care. Mine all weigh just the right amount for what I need them to do, and are perfectly weighted for their roles in my life, and that's all that matters to me.

I just check the weight on my 2012 CQC7 and it came in at 5oz.

I think the OP's point was he bought the knife thinking it was 3.5 oz and got a knife 5oz. If he spent the time to call EKI to verify it must have been important to him. I personally dont care about the weight, I usually only care about the length and design. I love my CQC 7, its an awesome knife. But if I bought a kinfe thinking it was 8in and a 9.5in knife showed up I would be upset. So I understand were the OP is coming from. EKI should know the weight of their knives. It could be possible the lady weighed a different knife or the scale was off.

My 2005 cqc 7 comes in at 3.8 oz, no wave. One of the best knives I have ever owned. Never thought to weight it until now........it gets the job done bottom line

Aren't there variations within the cqc7 line? Couldn't these variations account for differences in weights? I do realize EKI swapped to titanium lock only. Is that still the case?

The only newer EKI I own.

Weight is 5.394 ounce.

Does anyone have an earlier copy of this knife and an accurate calibrated scale?

Thanks for any info,

Kevin

Find a drill press, drill/mill out the stainless steel liner, be happy

If you are really concerned you could do this, should drop at least an ounce.

My 2012 CQC7AW, plain edge, satin finish(just picked it up today:D) listed at 3.8oz by Emerson, came in at 5.0oz, or 144g on my scale.

My 2007 CQC11, plain edge, black blade, came in at 5.9oz, or 169 grams on my scale. Emersons website lists the CQC11 at 5.1oz, though the picture is of a stone wash blade, so not really an accurate comparison, and there could be other variances from over the years.

I'm going to guess Emerson just uses the same weight for each basic model, rather than putting up the weight for each variant. At least given that Ernie1980's cqc7 comes in at the listed weight.

Weights dont bother me as long as its a decent size. The cqc7 carries nicely in my jeans pocket, while I find the -11 is too big, at least for daily carry. The hefty feeling is nice in hand, very confidence inspiring.

As much as nutnfancys a tool, his shot show interview with Mr. Emerson was a great watch, and Ernest said it himself, "if you've ever had to hump a ruck, you know a couple ounces makes a difference...". (not a direct quote). While I don't share the OP's annoyance with the weight, I do feel he has a valid point.

6shooter, I'm going to try to find my cqc11 and weigh it for comparison to yours.

Found it and its 2005 marked on the blade. Sharpened lightly with UF diamond and strop. Not enough to ever lower the weight.

My CQC-10 got about an ounce heavier after I had a framelock conversion done to it. I like it a lot better now, and carry it more. Does that count?

Probably my least favorite EKI. I did carry and use it, but IMHO there is a reason EKI stopped making them.

fwiw, my cqc7bw (tanto stonewashed and waved) is 4.88 ounces of pure american made goodness.

I don't think you should have a problem. A lot of people complain about weight but really you can't tell the difference when it's in your pocket. I have a Mini Commander and there are plenty of times where I forget it is in my pocket.

The easiest way to reduce weight is to drill out the liners. (In my humble opinion, that is.)

My CQC-10 (made in 2007) comes in at 4.7 oz. The scales were mod'd by a previous owner, and I'll be drilling out the liners early next year, when I get my shop area fixed up. My goal is to reduce weight by maybe 1/2-to-3/4 oz.
