are high end watches really worth it?

i think a good watch is worth it. i mean its usually a lifetime watch. i got a rado diamaster. its made from tungsten carbide a truly uniqe design, heavy (they ´have to be heavy imo) shiny and and as scratchresistant as tungstencarbide gets. first time i saw it i knew i had to have it. havent regreted it since. i love watches. there is only approximately 3 or 4 in the world just like mine (pink/copper) wish i knew how to post pictures from my computer here but i dont. when i get the money i will buy a vacheron constantin "overseas" the 2001 model. yummy yummy

My cell phone tells time and that's all I need. "Need" can only be defined by the person in need. If YOU "need" it ( for your reasons ) than buy it. If you're weighing the desision, I'd say you've already made it. Go with your gut . I collect WWII vehicles and spend more than what you'd probably concider wise on them . But that's my "need". If your's is watches, then dive right in. Ask yourself. Will I regret my decision, if I don't get it. Have you regreted such decisions in the past ?
We're men. WE "need" our stuff.

Rolex are over-hyped by their own marketing system."Superlative Chronometer", just does not exist! It either is a chronometer or it is'nt. A bit of " in house" self stature. Do not get me wrong a rolex is a fine piece of "jewellery" but it is just not in the same league as a Ulysse Nardin or IWC when it comes to accuracy when telling the time.In fact as the owner of both the above I quite proudly smile to myself when wearing my Omega Speedmaster Pro,when seeing someone wearing a rolex, that I think to myself, why was a rolex not chosen to be the MOONWATCH ! I wonder why? Maybe it was the rolex daytona- the chronograph-. Its hands warped and melted under stress! cool what a great £10000 watch!

Sure, Rolex suck at watch making. They are overpriced and not worth the asking price :jerkit:

For me, my Tag Heuer was worth EVERY penny I paid for it. It was a dream watch for me; I had always wanted one. I hunted and looked for ages to find THE watch, and I did. It has a green face (green is MY favorite color.), and stainless steel & gold bracelet. AND it is an automatic!! Watch bliss for me! It is THE watch for me!

I've been doing fine with Freestyle Shark watches since I was ten years old. 50 bucks was a lot of money when I was a kid, but I can handle that better now ;). Other than the batteries running low in my almost brand new Shark watch recently, they've been enough for me. I am looking at Casio and Victorinox now though for special wear.

Personally, I think they are worth it! I like having "nice" (hate that word!) things, and the sort of customers I deal with in my job notice if youre well-turned-out & wearing a good watch. More than that I like the watch for myself.
I have a 6-7 yr old Omega Seamaster that cost me about £800.00 & still looks like new, as my EDC (or EDW!!)
As a dress watch, slightly different variation of same watch, a Special Edition James Bond Chronometer (i think, made for Tomorrow Never Dies), that cost about £1300.00 but I believe theyre worth about £2000.00 these days!

Do you have any pix of that Special Edition James Bond watch? I am a fan! I would love to see what it looks like.

Heres the "mini-poster" advertising the watch. It is a beauty.

YES they're worth it and NO they aren't.

Bulova (esp Marine Star and Accutron models), Seiko, and Citizen all make watches that are well beyond Wal-mart quality and price but still reasonable and can perform or out-perform anytime made in Switzerland (and yes I know accutrons are Swiss-made before some smartass corrects me on that one). I've got plenty of watches from all 3 of these brands and ALL of them work, period, with nothing done other than changing a battery for the models that use them. Most watches are like cars in that they are a terrible investment, you can spend a fortune on many of the high-end brands and in a few years many are only worth slightly more than a seiko of the same model year. Not to mention QC has never been a problem with Japanese production watches.

Having said that nothing beats a ROLEX:D and they never really lose much value.

i just love the "old " omega seamasters heavy robust all you could ask for really, i need one of those too, it has to be the classic design, the largest model. i prefer the seamaster over any rolex or breitling any day

I was in the same position a # of yrs. ago.I got a Brietling SHARK(now discontinued).Didn't like the band so got a metal link band for $250(with extra links).Few yrs.ago link broke & I was told,I needed a new band(extra links wouldn't help)Band NOW would cost more than $250.Needed watch cleaned & sealed $225 ,they appraised my Brietling at $1100.NO,they wouldn't buy it for that.Got a rubber dive band for it.Wear it at night but mostly wear a G-SHOCK!

People buy expensive watches for the same reason people buy expensive knives. Because they can.

A point that's been made and overlooked is that "expensive" Swiss watches are bought primarily as pieces of jewelry and secondarily as timepieces. If one is looking for a super accurate wristwatch, they should get a quality quartz watch. If someone wishes to have a watch that is exclusive, expensive, intricate, and exceedingly beautiful, then they go to exclusive Swiss (and a few other places, such as Germany) automatics.

Yes, a parallel is custom knives. VERY expensive, TOO expensive for just a simple tool that cuts.

Also, for someone just wanting to transport people, they buy a Dodge minivan. For someone who appreciates the experience of driving an exotic automobile which is made of the best materials to exacting standards, they buy cars from companies such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, Rolls, etc.

let me see,
knives
guns
cars
flashlights
watches
gadgets (general)
electronics
gadgets (kitchen)

in each case, it is exactly as Ron said. You can buy a functional itme for a fraction of the price of the high end stuff. It may even work better. It will cenrtainly be lower-maintenence.

In each of these cases, you either have the gene, or not. Some folks just don't have the knife gene. If they need a knife, any ol' thang'll do, long as it cuts well. If they need a watch, Timex or Casio will do just as well as a Breguet, IWC, or Zenith.

I love very fine, mechanical gadgets. I can look at them all the dingdong day. I have the gadget gene, and the watch gene, in a big way. On the other hand, the wife has the black leather shoe gene. Now, I am completely indifferent when I walk past a shoe store--but not her (or any other XX Homo sapiens that I know).

EVERYBODY has some weirdass obsession with SOMETHING. And if you don't have it, it is very difficult to understand. You just gotta be tolerant.

Did I just see another Freestyle shark owner?
I just bought a bunch of them at 10.00 each, both men's and ladies styles as gifts to nieces and nephews. (they've since gone up to 15.00)
I wear the grey/black one with the nylon strap and small fastex type buckle.
