are high end watches really worth it?

Go for what you wont.
as for worth I have been wearing the same Rolax for 37 years.
was it worth the price i payed YES.

I wear an O&W automatic, mechanical, wristwatch that gives me + or _ 2 seconds per day accuracy. They are great Swiss watches that cost a whole lot less than a Rolex. I like a mechanical watch because of the link to the past. One of the most accurate watches I ever owned was a $19.00 Timex Quartz. You have to decide why you wear a watch. If it is just for time keeping than any good quartz watch will do.

I have several mechanical auto's, 2 Oris, 1 Zodiac Red Point and a Rolex SS Submariner. I enjoy them all and they are worth what I paid for them to me. By the way, I bought them all on the secondary market. Buy what you like and enjoy it.

Amen to the secondary market comment. Just like certain production knives, wait for the hot buyers to move on to the next new thing. At some point the prices get reasonable.

I've owned a Rolex Sub for 17 years and I also own a Timex Expedition. I love them both. :)

If you do buy on the secondary market, be VERY careful. There are lots and lots of very good fakes out there. You need to know exactly what you should be looking for, especially with the names that are commonly copied (Rolex, Omega, etc.)
