Are knives a "hobby" or a "pastime?"

To me, although they have technically different definitions, they mean just about the same thing.

That is... What is it you do for enjoyment. I wish it became my vocation though.

I'd like to be Neil Ostroff of True North Knives and buy, sell, and handle knives all day. This would never become a chore, at least I don't think it will.

I remember racing on an amateur level, mountain bikes and managing a bike store. The work never became tedious, because it was around the gadgets, people, items, environment that I liked.

Yep, people like Neil Ostroff or AG Russel must live in heaven!
As for me, knives are not a pasttime or a hobby, they are a passion.

Yeah, I think it would. I bought my first "real" knife from a local...KNIFE SHOP! Guy had all sorts of knives and the Spyderco Native I bought was the first knife I ever owned that didn't come from a hardware store.

But...... next time I visited..... he was gone. Victim of the I-net and Walmart.

Too bad really.

I just bought another knife this weekend from a RETAILER.

Got a SAK "Rambler" that I had bought from an Internet dlr but it had issues with the file. Just not gritty like the Classic. Even returned to Victorinox and they sent me a new one, but it was the same.

It was worth retail to be able to SEE the knife.

But....back to the point. I don't think it would be fun at all to sell knives EXCEPT at the A.G. Russell level.

I think I'll call em a pastime fer myself. Most "hobbies" are done with after ya complete sumpin. Knives, on the other hand, you can modify, replace, switch, booger up, lose money on, and STILL not be pissed.

:D

I was amazed, I had to read 22 posts before I found the word PASSION. I have studied peoples reaction to knives for more than 40 years and they have described it to me as: passion, addiction, obcession, sickness, love affair, fever and other words used in this thread. I like PASSION much the best of all of them, it speaks of strong feelings but does not imply illness.

If it is an illness there is no cure so we do not want people to know that we are ill or how ill we are.

PASSION ....now that is a good word....I was wondering
what it was I had.......I hope it never fades.:D

Knives are a hobby for me. I have a very small collection compared to others on BF.com but it would be pretty difficult for me to claim that I actively use all my knives. Some get carried and used but most go into my knife roll and inspected every so often.

No other way to describe it.

I live it.

Best Regards,
