Are looks important to your purchase decision?

I know this is going to sound reeeeaallly shallow, but if I don't like the way a knife looks, I won't consider buying it. Granted, if I got to use a blade I didn't like the looks of, and it was very useful, I would revise my opinion and consider making that purchase.

Does anyone else go about it the same way, or are you all much more open-minded than me?

If I dimly like the looks, I dont buy it. There are so many options, you may as well get what floats your boat.

That doesn't sound shallow at all. For most of us, form is definitely put over function, but of course, form and function together are what we all look for. I'm right there with you. I don't care if it's the best reviewed knife on the market. If it looks like hell, I probably won't want it. Same goes for buying a car, house, bike, clothing, etc.

Nope, never.. Won't buy a knife if I don't like how it looks.

In a knife, looks are secondary to function, but yes, they matter.

Absolutely looks matter for me. I tend not to like sheepsfoot-shaped blades, excessive recurves, handles that taper dramatically toward the rear, "Persian"-type curved blades and anything that seems out of proportion. Those kinds of knives don't get a second look from me. But I'm a sucker for smooth lines and spear- and drop-points.

Heck yea looks matter. But if it only looks good and is it's a piece of junk of a knife I wouldn't buy it. There are a lot of "cool" looking sub $60 knives out there, but I wouldn't buy it because I want a good quality knife.

big time. if it doesn't appeal to me, no chance i'm buying it. i won't use a knife i don't like.
once i like the looks of a knife, quality dictates whether i'm getting it or not.

if everyone raves about a knife, and i take a look at it and it doesn't speak to me, i'm not interested.

gotta like your tool.... (that sounds way dirtier than i meant it)

I tend to see knives as functional art. They should look good and be useful at the same time. I don't see the point of having to settle for one or the other with so many options available to me. That said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people like clean, simple designs while others prefer things with a bit of flair to them. They are all good, just different.

Now if my circumstances were different, such as having very limited funds or choices I probably wouldn't care as much. I would just want something that works.

Absolutely. I seek out knives that have a good 'flow', and am often lured by attractive handle materials.

a knife's looks are first on my list, functionality is second.

i know that sounds odd and bass ackwards but i figure every knife out there has an edge and can cut so the function is a given, so i might as well pick the best looking cutter.

Generally, looks have at least some influence over my purchases. Still, three of my favourite knives are, imho, pretty ugly, but I couldn't be happier with them and wouldn't change a thing about them - Kershaw's Cyclone and Ram and Hogue's EX-01 aren't exactly easy on the eyes imho but they're undoubtedly fantastic blades.

I'm mainly for performance. Look at Spyderco's lineup. Their knives are butt-ugly, but they sell like hotcakes. Why? Because they are more for performance, not looks. That is why I buy many many Spyderco's. :D But, if I find a knife that looks nice, I may buy it, depending on the steel, company reputation, etc.

You can get looks and function, as well. There are a whole bunch of production knives out there, not to mention custom, that can fit the bill.

looks for me are very important.
if i don't like the looks of it i never buy it.
spyderco was a brand, at first, that i didn't like at all but with time it started to grow on me:)
because i always have to import my stuff, looks is, probably, the first thing i go for.
bought one like this based on that:)

Looks are a little important to my purchase, the last few knives i've purchased have been functional (BM 551 SBKSN and a CRKT Apache II) and they look cool, so it was just a plus to have them look cool.
