Are neck knives safe?

The knife is not the issue, other than to consider whether or not it is of a size that is practical and convenient to you. (And that doesn't set you up for a vacation in the local dungeon).

The sheath is the issue, and how you attach the sheath to you is another issue, as has been stated.

I quite like my Izula, and I quite like the sheath I made for it, as I make custom sheaths... And I quite like the new handles on it...

So, then the decision becomes....

Do you think you will like the knife? Does it meet your needs?

If so, then after you have purchased it, with the help of those who carry their knives, you can find a way to carry it that you will find convenient and practical.

This thread, to which I made a small contribution or three, should help you out...

This is a minority opinion, but neck carry is my preferred method of small fixed blade carry. Frequently in the backcountry, I am wearing shorts or ski pants that do not have belt loops, or I am adding and shedding pants layers throughout the day. I don't like packstrap carry because sometimes you get away from your pack.

Once, jumping over a log, I jarred a BRKT Mini Northstar out of an inverted kydex neck sheath. It was scary but ended fine. The kydex maker had warned me that he was not happy with the retention but it had felt good to me, until I watched my MNS bouncing down a steep trail ahead of me. He was right and that was that.

Other than that, I have lots of days and lots of trail miles with neck carry and it is good to go.

The recommendations above are good ones: get the Izula and neck carry it when it is not in your pocket.

Another fan of the neck knife carry. I always carry one under my shirts w/o any issues (if I had one, I couldn't type this), but I prefer the little ones that just give me a little option for small tasks when I can't carry a pocket carry. I like the new CRKT minimalist, because it is very handy sized.
BTW, I don't carry it for Self Defense6or the slow draw issue, but just to have a blade handy when needed.

This thread is going to be like a broken record. A neck knife is safe provided the sheath secures the knife well. I have only had one knife fall out of its sheath but it did not cut me. You shouldn't get impaled unless you have an uber thin sheath and you land with the knife perpendicular to your chest point first. The choking hazard can be alleviated with a simple break away chain.

Improvised retention strap:
Here is what I do when neck carrying the Izula. This method means that it will be slightly harder to draw the knife from the sheath, but you can rest assured that it will not fall out even if you pull on it. By using these two pieces of paracord it is also easy to transition to horizontal belt carry.

The Izula and Becker Necker have been mentioned a few times. Is there a devoted thread to the comparison of these two knives? If so can someone provide a link?

Thanks.

I have not seen such a thread or review....

What would you like to see in that regard? I am always looking for small photo reviews to do, so I might tackle this one, after I have bested a couple others...

I found one about the Izula and Bravo necker but haven't found one specifically between the Izula and Becker necker yet. I'll keep looking.

A little tip, if you don't have the search feature, you can google it and find Bladeforums hits.

I'm not mikellen but I would love to see that comparo if you can!
Specially if you could show photos of both of them in your hand, comparing overall size and blade length, the sheaths, etc. Well, the regular stuff :p.

Well, I am not promising anything real soon, as I am behind on sheaths, and I owe 4 reviews, and I am working on my shop.... But, I will be getting the handles for the Becker Necker next week probably... And after I have those, then I will think up a photo review, knife to knife, with and without handles, etc... And, I might even be able to get the Bravo Necker into the mix, though that is a pretty far fetch... And if lightning should strike, maybe the new Becker/RAT will be out by then....

Just sayin'

I think that is an innovative solution, and well-imagined.

But, with a well made sheath, like a good kydex sheath, such is not necessary.

Not to say that it is, or that it is not necessary with the standard sheath, as I have no knowledge of them.

It's not necessary on the factory sheath although, I can see the factory nubs wearing down enough over time to lose retention. Kydex is just more user friendly also.

Here's my current favorite neck knife. BRKT bravo necker and my first attempt at kydex for it. I'm liking this set-up a lot.
