Are "Rambo" type knives practical?

If by "Rambo Knife" you mean a large Bowie Knife...Well, they are more practical than a Tom Brown Tracker (which still gets stroke jobs on these and other boards, despite it being more useless than a pewter handled fantasy knife with Pakistan mystery steel)

Ah come on, they're cool blades. You ever use one? Or get shown how to use one by someone that knows?

Seen some impressive stuff done with tracker patterned knives:thumbup:

I like both HH's and Trackers:D

Sam is as cool as a cucumber in a refrigerator!

Thanks, Ron! It's not too difficult right now, though. It's 21 degress outside. :D

Hi all

This is a wonderful thread and I hope it never ends.

I love hollow handled knive and really don't understand all the hate directed at them.

Haters (like Leghog) always repeat the same thing again and again like a broken record:

1)They are weak at the blade to handle connection.
2)the saw doesn't work.
3)they are too big.
4)they are too expensive.

My answer is:

1)if the knife is a well constructed knife then it is not weak as we have seen proven by all the well known makers of old and by Mr Sam Wilson, I mean a knife that you can do chin ups on? What more do you want?!?

2)the saw is meant to be used on thin aircraft skin, poles of small diameter, and to make notches not cut down trees, and it does what it was designed for.

3)the size of a knife is a matter of personal prefrance and it also depends on what you expect to do with your knife.
to some they are big, to some they are not big enough.

4)a high quality custom piece is never cheap, be it a knife, a car, a watch, or even a pair of shoes.
So if one doesn't understand what quality is and what its worth then I guess I understand why they would think only the cheap or basic knives are practical.

Bottom line is
I think HH knives are practical, functional, and cool as hell

As for those that don't like them, I respect you're opinion...... But I can't help but feel sorry for all the hate you got in you.

Nice post, Nitro74. And glad to have you on Bladeforums! You've probably seen it already, but in my signature line, there's another thread on HH knives. Come on over and join the fun, we'd love to have you.

Uh-oh, I'm not touching a Tracker conversation. That's too controversial even for me, lol! :D

I love that Reeve, pvicenzi. Well, both of them, actually. Hollow handle tanto style blade. Awesome! I'm constantly saying this, but I'll say it again: Chris Reeve, his designs, his precision, and dedication to making knives that are built to work have all had an immeasurable influence in my outlook on knifemaking, and indeed, helped to motivate me to start making knives.

Uh-ohh, I can just see the new thread now: 'Are Tom Brown Tracker knives practical?':p

Don't you go stirring the pot, now BladeScout! :D

Thank you Sam, great to be here and it's been a pleasure reading your posts, you'll be hearing from about a knife soon my friend.

Hey Ron, I gotta ask. Have you decided if HH "Rambo" knives are practical or not? Heck, your opinion is the only one that matters since it was your original question. :D

I guess I need to start saving me coppers and get one then! :-)

I recently signed up man. Thought I'd check out the scenery. But I can stay outta here if you want that. No skin off my back.

Not at all I'm not trying to insult you. I am just giving advice that if a thread's last post is from 2103 it is probably better to start a new post.

But let's not get off on the wrong foot. You have a nice collection there. I didn't realize so many different makers produced Rambo knives.

I'd have to agree that the Rambo movies changed my life as well in terms of knives. My first "survival knives" were not Rambo knives, but they had a great deal of influence on my early choices as to what a "survival" knife is. I've changed, but it's fun looking back at things.

You can't imagine how many times I have picked up and handled one of the Rambo knives at shows. But, they were for the most part United Cutlery stuff and I passed (over and over again :D).

BAMA1ST, you just added your handmade collection to the big Rambo thread. Yeah, it's old, but it fits. Bama..... I just bought a new TN Vols cap today. ;) But I was rooting for the Tide in the championship.

My Buck 184 clone satisfies my John Rambo. I know buying clones is "bad", but I didn't have the $100 when Buck 184's were selling at the Army Navy stores and I wasn't about to shell out $400-500 for one, so I bought the best clone their was (about 8 years ago) and it gives me warm and fuzzies to use it.

Thanks Lapedog. Sorry for jumpin the gun on ya. Apologies.

Thanks also 22. I didn't even realize how old this post waz.

I find the flat head and Phillips screwdrivers on the guard a funny thing on the Rambo knives somehow. I never noticed those until recently :). I heard an interview with A. G. Russell where he said that when Lile made the first Rambo knife, he got the request to make a knife "like no other". I guess he managed that quite fine.
