Are SAK's any good?

I am very fond of mine. They are decent knives for day to day lite chores. For the money, you can't go wrong. I would find it hard to believe that with the many different styles and configurations that a person could not find a SAK to meet their needs.

finding one that has what you need isn't the problem. it's finding one that has what you need that doesn't have a dozen things you DON'T need that's difficult and can sometimes even necessitate customization.

The Outrider is my choice in that regard. Great knife, like all SAKs.

I've been packing a Buck c.s.110.Though I might switch off with many others,I always have my Swiss tinker on me.

SAKs are no good at all. They are terrible. Worst knives I ever used. Send your SAKs to me and I will protect you from them.

Seriously, I EDC a SAK huntsman with a Buck 110. Great combination. Add a pliers and you have everything you need for household chores. Add a hatchet and you are set for the outdoors.

Where can I get a hatchet with pliers attached? :D

The only SAKs I never liked were the ones with pliers. They interfere with the adjacent knife blade.

A SAK is the one and only knife (specifically Victorinox) that I will take out of the box, use then and there and trust with my life. If all I was able to buy were Victorinox products I would not even be sad...

I agree with this. I love the idea of a SAK with pliers but find myself disappointed every time I've tried one out. I still might get a Workchamp someday though, or perhaps a Workchamp xl.

piece of friendly advise for anyone with the intention of buying any SAK as a temporary EDC...stick it in your pocket, as it's no bl@@&y good leaving it at home!
once in the habit of EDCing a SAK, you're guranteed to find every reason to buy yet another "temporary replacement" until a suitable choice is ever made....

Just got back after buying a one-handed trekker. I decided to go with a serrated blade and holy crap it's sharp! It cuts paper like there's nothing there and I now have a huge bald patch on my arm. I have a strong feeling that this won't be a "temporary" edc ;)

I also agree about SAK's being the worst knives ever...it's making my buck 110 seem kind of useless :grumpy:

Edit: would you guys reccomend filling off the serrations or are the serrations shallow enough that they will still allow for precision cutting? I've been searching around for a bit and apparently plain edges are better in almost all respects.
what do you guys think?

Yes, they are good knives.

I've tried a variety of different types, but no matter what else I'm carrying, I always have a SAK in my pocket. Just thought about it as I'm typing this, but in my pocket I have an Explorer Plus with attached photon. That combo means that I have on me at any given time a minimum of a couple of nice blades, a variety of screwdrivers, a nice pair of scissors, a magnifying glass, a pen, etc., not to mention the light. The combo is so light weight that it took this thread to make me remember it was in my pocket.:)

Amazon is a good place to get SAKs on the cheap.

Congrats on your OHT!

I'd suggest do not file off the serrations! I'm not a serrations fan either, normally I avoid serrations or combo edges but on Vics OHT they did it right and function nice.

Being forward (serrations) they do a nice job to jab and slash materials (boxes, tape etc) with good thickness to cut but not too thick to bind, try em out!

With the PE in the back you can do some nice carving and delicate work (your precision) with more control and grip (though smaller area than all PE).

You can also get a PE OHT now too, and nothing wrong with having 2!

They don't seem to get in the way of anything. I can whittle wood just fine although the plain edge works slightly better (not enough of a difference to justify filling the blade). I dunno if it's just me but the serrated edge seems to slice paper and shave better. Plus it apparently holds it's edge longer.

Many of the SAKs listed are very good choices, I would like to add, that they can get extremely sharp, here's my cadet that I whittled hair with(convex edge). The edge holding isn't bad at all, it's fine for everyday use.

I carry a Swiss champ plus on my side no matter were Im at in this world. Its like a best friend. I always feel I can handle just about anything with that knife by my side. I carry at least two knives on me all of the time but a Swiss Army knife is always with me no matter what else I have. Im having surgery this coming Tues. to take out my Kidney and I just wish I could have it in my hand while they operate on me, haha. I am gonna try to hold on to it until they put me asleep and then maybe my wife will get it and hold it till im out of there. I just gave my 2 nephews and Huntsman a piece. They love em. When I am well again I think Im gonna get the Swiss champ S.O.S set. I have always wanted one. Its kind of a get well present to myself. You just cant go wrong with a Victorinox SAK.

I agree  and I was

When I first got it I couldn't wait until a PE version came out,
but after using it awhile I found out it's fine just the way it is.
cuts everything sweet, wood to cardboard and drywall and plastic,
and more.

One thing I do like "a little" better is the new rounder hole over
the oval hole, the new hole is alittle easier to open with, but it's
not a big deal and I would like to get a new Soldier (OHT) and
get a feel for the grippier grips.

Good luck and god bless Wildone39. My wife donated a kidney to her brother three years ago and they both are doing well. Can never have too many Swiss Champs! I hope you get your new one soon!
