Or are they not undercutting the true valuation of their knives?!

Which is the same thing because the "value" (you are really referring to "price") is always determined by supply and demand. There's no such thing as a "false price." There is just a price. Pay it or don't.

This is nonsense on so many levels it's terrific.

The knife enthusiasts who are the only purchasers of sprint-run knives are able to differentiate between common and rare steels. They are not:

  • Going to be fooled into thinking that VG-10 is "worth" more because Spyderco produces a different knife in REX45.
  • Going to be fooled into thinking that a few sprint runs means that Spyderco is the only source for rare steels.
  • Going to use the words "penultimate resource" when they mean "ultimate source."

Again, this is entirely mistaken.

A big part of why Spyderco succeeds is because they serve different market segments equally well. The sale of a sprint-run PM2 is going to have no bearing on the sale of a Smock, a Tenacious, a Santoku, a Cara Cara, or even a vanilla PM2. However, putting out quality knives of a multitude of designs and various price points IS what has built their brand reputation. That is what they are known for -- not for putting out a few sprints. Sprints are only a small part of a big Spyderco puzzle and probably the least important.

Ok I was with you for the tenacious, smock, santoku and caracara....but a vanilla PM2? You sir have gone too far.

Syyderco fans strike me more as the modern version of traditional pocketknife collectors. Those Strider folks, on the other hand......whew. That requires a level of willing suspension of disbelief rarely seen outside of modern American politics. :p How many people on here got banned from that "green forum" for merely responding to a thread about Strider somewhere else? With Busse, The seem like decent folks, but I still can't figure out what they have been cheering about at the booth at Blade for all of these years.
As for the Instagram knife cults, who are these guys and how do they do it? i could use a bit of cult like following. :D

I will continue my "cult like" behavior either way, and pursue Spyderco sprints all the same.

BTW.. We need an Amalgum sprint in smooth CF and M390.

I read an interesting business article once that said Harley Davidson was one of the first successful companies to boost demand by purposely limiting supply. Since then it is a common business practice. I do not see any ethical issues with it... just smart business utilizing a specific marketing style.

Studying a business model is not negative. Propping up the value of your entire inventory over 5 to 10 products that your fan base wants and sells out in a matter of hrs to days is smart.

The "Just-In Time" Business model is the "Custom Shop." Excess inventory is no good, and a lot of knife companies are opening JIT Custom Knife Shops. If they can do it, so can Spyderco. All we are talking abt here is creating two blades instead of one, and two grip types, instead of one. THAT IS ALL THAT SPYDERCO IS DOING, but they are not filling all of the possible orders, they are creating scarcity, false demand, and a lot of unfulfilled potential customers.

My degree is a BS in the College of Business is from a Big 12 University, Management Information Systems and I have minors in Internetworking (Cisco Networking AAS), Architecture(AA), General(AS). I am also a Jr in EE Computer Engineering. I was dual listed / dual degree seeking but I packed it in and headed to Silicon Valley for work. School is OK, but I'd rather make money. I'm no genius and the degrees got me interviews.
With all of that book learning' I'd have thought that you'd have learned that "penultimate" means "next to last."

What will all of these current release sprints be worth in 10-20 years when today’s supersteel is tomorrow’s entry level garbage?

Serious question as I am fairly new to knives and sprints.

Guys has anyone else got this email from Spyderco about draining our bank accounts buying all their knives (already did that),

Then writing Spyderco into our will and taking out a large life insurance policy then faking our deaths in a mass suicide?

Apparently we get unlimited sprint runs of any Spyderco in any steel in the next life.

No,
Good marketing/sales practice does not equal forming a cult.

Great philosophical question. One can look back on auction sites and look at some older sprint runs that were in steels like AUS-8 and ATS-55 and such. But I would think that the steel wouldn't make as much difference as the design as far as demand goes.

Those little Baby Jess Horn knives in micarta and AUS-8 still command a pile of cash.

"Today's Supersteel" is still going to be pretty good stuff, so I don't see it being a big factor in what the price ultimately does.

Don't worry about what they'll be worth. Use 'em and take pride that you have a knife like not that many other folks do.

Could there be someone Trouling this thread?

Within hours of my first post here on BladeForums I was verbally attacked. I've created threads with meaningful content only to be attacked.

What I've come to use quite often is the IGNORE or mute function. Works quite well. Left click on the name of the persons account, then click on IGNORE and you will not see their posts anymore.

I just wish that I could have the opportunity one day to pick up a sprint before all the flippers buy them up, but who has time for that when you have to adult? Haha

It doesn’t bother me though, sprint runs are fun and give you the opportunity to own something different in whatever flavor it may be.
