Are the BK5's still stamped and not etched?

My understanding is that ease of production was the biggest factor.

making a stamp, and running the press is somewhat expensive compared to the laser as well.

less potential damage too from warping, even stress risers...

plus, laser, we gots a laser, how do we use it? :D on everything...

"do not look into laser with remaining eye"

lasers!

It is real and is very rare.

MY PRECIOUS!

why is rick not posting anymore?
and that's a bad thing?

;)

I read that the BK5 is going the way of the BK15, and it's pretty heavily discounted on most sites right now, so naturally I had to buy one.
How come the 5 & 15 gets 'heavily discounted' (I know about the package deal)? - I realize the Model 9 cult it large but are the two not popular Beckers?
My 5 and 15 are amongst my favorites for the rake of the blade for how practical they are round camp. I like them both A LOT.

Anyone know why they ever switched from stamped to laser ???

Ease of production makes the most sense from a manufacturing standpoint, but it really does yield a stronger knife. Not that the stamped versions are weak, but stamping just creates stress risers and can cause micro-fractures that weaken the blade slightly and can propogate over a very long time. Not a big issue, I'm just picky and a bit of a perfectionist.

The 5 and 15 have been discontinued - hence the discounts. Have you been hiding under a rock, lol? (Just in case you have, the 4 has been discontinued, as well.)

Lol, Ive LIKED Beckers for a while but only got my first Becker recently.

I wasnt aware, that I'd committed a Becker subforum social faux pas. I havent been that active in here as compared to else where on the forum.

Further more, maybe you should reread my post above: Im not mentioning the knives being discontinued or not with even a word. My post was more in the lines of "
How come these knives are more popular?" I think them just dandy.

Now that you mention the word discontinued (I didnt at all), that begs the question, why these where not in the taste of Beckerheads as compared to wildly popular 9.

As mentioned, Im actually more fond of these for my use than the 9. Yes thats heresy here, but I have a fine chopper better suited to my needs than the 9. YMMV.

I forgot the smiley to indicate jest...but at least I threw in a lol.
I miss news of new and/or discontinued knives all the time.

Wait... the 5 is discontinued???

:p

There's no accounting for tastes. Actually, I understand how the khukuri shape (the 4) doesn't appeal more widely, but apparent reception of the 5/15 puzzles me a little more.

I agree.

In regards to for example the 9, Im not a huge fan or that one, so clearly in the minority as Im also over the moon with the (maybe not quite so popular) 5 & 15. Those I could not be happier with.

Maybe the 'apparent reception' is indeed because the 5 and 15 look like no other in the Becker range.

Plus - and Im on thin ice here - wasnt there something about the 15 being designed by Ethan in conjunction with Mr. Fisk (and what could be better than THAT!)?

And the 5 not being designed by either but more a derivative of the 15?

Asking, not telling.

Because that would make the 5 the red headed step child of the Becker range. Maybe thats why. I get the impression the 5 is not looked upon as fondly as other Beckers and indeed the 15.

I avoided the 5 for a long time...simply because I didn't think I had a use for an 8" blade in that shape. Seemed like a fighting knife style to me, I guess; and, now that I'm older, that just doesn't have the same appeal as it would have in my early-mid 20s. It also seemed very different from other Beckers, in that it didn't seem very versatile (to me). Now that I have one, I regret waiting so long...except for the fact that I got a better deal on it. I still use mine primarily for kitchen duty - I've used it for the past few turkeys and pork loins, and it makes an easy job of watermelon.

Vice versa. The 5's blade was designed by Jerry, and the handles, of course, by Uncle Ethan.

DOH! Thats of course what I meant. Not what I wrote but what I meant, lol. Thx:p I switched them around and I even have both knives... (insert head-banging-against-brick wall emoticon here)

Oh they are bud. Believe me. Ask almost anyone of the Beckerheads in here and they'll tell you, not only how great the 5 and 15 are, but that they also have multiples of both. Seriously, ask SALTY how much he likes the 5, or TRAVISH how much he likes the 15. Unfortunately, whilst we all have a $#!+ton of those blades, we couldn't buy them in the quantity that KA-BAR would've liked ergo, they are now the way of the Disco ("Freak out!") a.k.a. Studio54 knives..

My feelings are the 5/15 don't get used quite as often in general and thus break less (?) resulting in less replacement blades. Pair that with a less do-everything blade shape and you'll get more folks opting for the 7/9/16 instead.

Great design, competes for usage with other great designs and loses more often than the others.
