Fair warning all those who read further, I'm probably going to piss some people off with this rant, so put on your big girl panties if you keep reading.
I am getting completely fed up with Facebook Knifemaker groups. I haven't found a single one that isn't overrun with willfully ignorant people. Now, I don't want you to misunderstand, I'm ignorant about a lot of things. We all are. Ignorant means lacking knowledge, not unable to seek knowledge. But.....It seems I can't go a day without seeing five or ten Facebook posts in various groups with titles like "What should I make with these thirty files I bought for $5 each??!?!" or "how much are these ten files worth?" (Btw, they did not appreciate it when I asked how much scrap was worth) or "Yay! I just got a bunch of leaf springs, how do I take them apart so I can make zombie slayer knives?" or "what are lawnmower blades made from?" and then someone posts a completely errant chart that lists lawnmower blades as definitely being 1075 (or whatever) steel. One this morning was "what are portable bandsaw blades made from?" It said welded edge on the package. The question was not the issue. That was ignorance, no big deal. The issue was when he was told by more than one person, "it is low carbon with high carbon teeth welded to the edge, he ignored it completely. He had zero desire to understand why it wouldn't make a good knife. I'm about to just say screw Facebook altogether. It really is a time pit and I feel the worst thing to have been invented in the history of mankind. My frustration comes when these people have zero desire to want to learn why we say don't start with unknown steel, or why we need to get unknown steel analyzed, or why your awesome little chart is not awesome and incredibly damaging to a new maker. I know it's just the Internet, but damn people! Come on! Have some freaking pride in what you choose to spend your time doing and do it right! I'm not saying files can't make good knives, because we know they can, but there are much easier ways to learn.
Are there any Knifemaker groups that don't drift to the lowest common denominator? Maybe I'm pissing into the wind here, but it seems there have to be some out there? On a related note, any good maker groups/hashtags on IG to follow?
I've had a bunch of caffeine, some ADD meds, and I'm sitting in an ambulance in the rain holding down the street corner bored as heck, so forgive me if I sound grumpy.
