Are there any decent Facebook/Instagram groups--or--I hate willfully ignorant people

Well, there is no meaning of life, it just is.

Brian will have to answer the other part.

Lol. The meaning of life is 42. Woot wot, more literary references inbound. Lol

BigIn, if you want to find out why I want to eat your dog, you are going to have to buy a copy of Atlas Shrugged. Be careful though, it's addictive.

Lol Ok will do.

I assume those folks who post that they have 20 files and what are they worth asre trying to sell you files.
You aren't their customer

You're trying to educate them on what good steel and good knives are,
They're not your customer either.

If you're going to spend internet time, may as well target it to knife uses and collectors
I think there are at least 8 or 10 knife related forums, probably more

There are undoubtedly hundreds of hunting, fishing, zombie slaying, survival, prepping, firearms, and cooking related forums too.
Maybe a smattering of those would be better

Plus
I think the value of Facebook lies in those you know than those who know them.
Post photos of your work on your page and let the ripples spread out from there to folks who may buy local in person.

Educating the general FB public is futile.
It's hard enough to do here and those folks are qualified as interested parties.

Look at those lawnmower blade videos, 500,000 views
that kind of crap strikes an nostalgic oldtymey chord with folks.

I gave up on Facebook a long time ago. Instagram is a much better format for knifemakers to associate with like-minded individuals. Since joining IG I've all but ignored FB. As far as advertising I'm not sure.

I saw some of the particular thread I think you're referencing, where lawnmower blades were described as "1075". I think our own James Terrio waded in with some logic and truth, but I'm with the OP, I think it's futile.

Like the count said, those guys aren't my customers, nor am I trying to buy things from them, so they are welcome to pass their ignorance around between them like mono at a high school dance. I'm staying out. Like has been said also, posting good pictures of your work on a website whose sole purpose is to spread stuff around doesn't seem like it could ever be a bad idea.

The Knife Makers closed group run by Aldo and Mace is decent for actual knifemaking knowledge, but it's still a FB group if you know what I mean.

I had a look at instagram, but as far as I can tell, it only works on a cell phone

Is that right ?

I like a big screen on a real computer
Those cell phone screens are so small.

Sam, Jason, good insight. I'm going to go make another slipjoint now. Might as well try to make a knife to actually sell to my customers. :)

Yeah i think your correct other than an iPad I think the phone app is the only way to use Instagram unless there's a way to pull it up on a PC.

I'm a thinker. We are a miserable breed be it a majority of our thoughts are just one distraction leading to a great many more... You have to turn the noise off and just "do"... I take great pleasure in the methodical process of making. It's very much like a crossword puzzle or sudoku are to others except things aren't adhering to an exact end result, and that end result is constantly being manipulated by my hands, mind, mistakes, and craft.

Idea here is to focus on bettering yourself first. Squash the frivolous pish-posh when you need a 5 minute break.

I am 28 years old and have never in my life had a facebook account, simply cant stand it. I do however use instagram. What blows my mind is some of the stuff on there that is selling, and the constant ass kissing. Makers i wont name, who have terrible reputations for one reason or another, whether its customer service, poor products etc, post a picture, and 1000 people run to the bathroom and lock the door, all while posting the most over the top praise and dribble. The ignorance is shocking on there as well. Its a great laugh sometimes just scrolling through the posts looking at crap however. A while back there was a "knife pimper" on there doing heat anodizing and getting customers. The problem is he was not doing Ti scales and such, he was heat coloring peoples blades! It not only shows huge ignorance on his part but also on the part of the knife owners, as one that he did was an Emerson, so not a cheap dollar store knife. The same guy was also doing filework and jimping, which basically looked like he just randomly jammed the spine into the belt edge at random intervals. With all that said there are still some great makers on there, and it does help with exposure, as i have sold probably 5 knives due to posting on instagram.

Its different for us teens. Facebook was a big thing for me when I was in middle school, and its just the way you are expected to talk to people. You want to go somewhere? tell someone on facebook. Calling is certainly falling out of style unless you are dating or talking to other adults. That being said, knifemaking groups on facebook are certainly hell. Its a bunch of 13 year olds who want to know how to make a sword with the piece of 20 gauge flashing they found.

OK, folks. I let this run a while because Brian needed to work off his meds.

This isn't Shop talk material, so I am moving it to ATG. It really should be in Whine and Cheese, but ATG will work.

ayn rand novels, man I have to chime in. I started with We The Living and went from there. love the imagination even for lack of humility...making knives and ayn rand go pretty well in hand. I wonder what kinda knives the characters in the books would carry? probably a jurgen steinau or maybe one of those neat daggers sheathed in wood

The great thing about the internet is, anyone can share their ideas, opinions, creations and research. The awful thing about the internet is, anyone can share their ideas, opinions, "creations" and "research".

What is Facebook? ;)

Don't sweat it; you're not missing much.

Look how much good it did anyone :D I recently un-joined a handful of "knifemaking" groups there, too. Each has a handful of people who are worth knowing... but I knew 90% of them already, anyway. The rest are just blowing smoke up each other's behinds. The same goes for pretty much any FB group... camping, survival, fitness, macrame, whatever.

I do post knives on there sometimes, but mostly I just use FB to keep in touch with friends and family, look at silly cat pictures, and stuff like that. It's marginally better than staring at the TV. :p
