Are you a seller or a keeper?

Seller & gifter. In my house, they come and they go. Can remember online buy/sell/trade all the way back to the ancient Usenet Group days. For a long time was on the bay until fees and policies got out of hand. Really enjoy this platform. Had more than 75 at one point. Now, I try to keep collection to around 25. Particularly like knowing there is always something new in the works or on its way. Enjoy buying a “platform,“ knife like Bugout, PM2, Para 3, Deka, etc. and adding hardware, scales, clips, then gifting / selling and starting over. Tastes evolve over time. Yes, there are 3 or 4 I use a lot and 20 or so that I don’t carry very much, enjoy looking at, and will probably pass along to someone else. My knife hobby has brought much enjoyment - definitely worth the investment of time & money…

Moved half of these CRK along to other BF members recently. Plan to have Inkosi modified by a pro - stay tuned :)

Original Goat and a Lynch clip really improves a MagnaCut Deka. Time to sell and start over - what’s next?

I am a keeper, mainly because I’m far too unmotivated (ok, lazy) to go about selling something online. In my 45+ years on this planet, I’ve not yet done a person to person transaction over the internet, and I likely never will.

I think that pretty much describes me also... 🤔😕

I like most of the knives I have, but I don't have near enough time to use them all.

I have sold a few to local friends when the knives became redundant. Selling on the Internet seems like too much hassle. I have wondered about sending some to places like A.G. Russell or Arizona Custom Knives that sell knives on consignment.

I also give away some knives as tokens of appreciation for a job well done.

The minimalist in me is at constant odds with my tendency to be a gear nut, but for the most part I like to let anything that doesn't see use move along as I experience something new. I was the same with watches and other hobbies throughout my life. You'd be surprised to know that my first Rolex (that I've also parted with now) was actually funded by the sale of some limited edition G-Shocks. It's not even necessarily that I need the funds from the sale of items to purchase new things, it's just something that I've always done. My first hobby of collecting was baseball cards when I was a kid, which turned into my first business when I was just in middle school. That's not to say I sell my knives as any kind of business, and I'm not a flipper (insofar as I don't buy up new scarce knives to instantly turn a profit on 🤢), but it's just a way to enjoy a hobby without things getting out of hand. I guess I'm just lucky that I tend to be in to things that hold their value.

Looking back, my dad was the same way with his toys, and as a kid I used to get mad when he sold things I had an attachment to. My favorite boat, his Jeep, Bronco, Big Red 3-wheeler to get a 4-wheeler  , the VW bug/chopped-buggy that I learned to drive in and was given free reign with on the old dirt roads when I was only in the second grade (as you can see I'm still a bit salty about those last two I reckon ;)); all sold as he purchased new things. I guess now I understand.

Sell what I no longer need / want to help facilitate the next purchase. These are typically ones I have not really used much if at all. The ones I still have are all used as the tools they are.

Same with car parts, stock or aftermarket.

I sell knives to buy more knives and I generally only keep about 7-10 at once. I get rid of the ones I don’t like to use. I don’t have any that just get looked at. Sometimes I mod them just cus I like making them unique, then I pass them along. I’ve pretty much honed in on my exact preferences after a few years. But they could change!

When I first got into knives, I should’ve ran the other way. Er, I mean, I used to sell a knife for every 5 or so I bought.

Over time my tastes have been honed and I know what I’ll like and not like. I’m usually right. I also have a few regrets on some I sold. I make a few purchase mistakes every now and then, but for the most part I love most knives I buy.

So much so, I cannot seem to part with any of them. This has been a horrible financial decision and it just does not stop.

I’ve amassed quite a number of knives with no signs of slowing down. I’ve run out of room multipl times and I just seem to make more.

Sure there’s 3 or 4 knives I wouldn’t mind parting with - mainly a few cheapies that were dumb buys. It’s almost not worth the hassle to make the $20-$30 I might get selling them.

Anybody else a keeper?

Or do flip knives on the regular?
I never sell, I am definitely a keeper. I’ll buy some knives just because they are interesting. I don’t always have a particular knife in my rotation. There’s a couple that I would never carry. I have a couple hundred knive at this point. I have given some away but that’s the only way mine ever leave my possession. I have mine displayed in my office. I will look at the whole collection and choose knives that I am going to carry for what I am going to be doing.

I'm definitely a hoarder keeper. I've been meaning to sell off some knives for the last half decade or so, but can never bring myself to go through with it. I always find some justification for hanging on to them, even if I haven't carried a knife in years.. "because it's cool!".. perfectly valid reason to keep one around. Fortunatlely, knife boxes are small.. it's going to take a lot of years still before my hallways become too narrow to navigate through..

I sell what I don't use, and more often than not I'll throw extra gear in the box with knives I've sold. Multitools, aftermarket pocket clips, additional blades, sunglasses that are too small for my head, etc.

I give away way more than I sell...

And I still have too much...but it doesn't hurt anything, so the impact is nil.

Keeper here. I just can't bear to part with any of my knives. Hopefully my sons will enjoy them when I am gone.

In 2021 I bought 23 knives and sold ten. Last year I bought only four and sold two. This year I placed a pre-order for a Barkie Kephart and might buy a Strider PT later on, and I sold one knife so far. So even though I am buying and selling less and less knives each year as my collection is stabilizing, my buy/sell ratio seems to be at constant ~0.5. Interesting.

I'm way more of a keeper than a seller although I have on occasion sold, traded and gifted away a relatively small number of knives.

Now that I'm getting older, I probably should take a hard look at my total accumulated knife inventory over these many years and make a real concerted effort to reduce and sell off parts of my collection.

In the past I've also gone through periods of time where I've taken a "hiatus" from the whole "knife scene" but I usually come back and start buying more knives.

Another issue with regards to knife collecting has also been the struggle over deciding which knives become users (which I separate into two classes: heavy and light use) and those knives that remain in unused/like new or near like new condition.

Mostly (99.9%) Keeper/Gifter. The last one I sold was an original Hinderer XM-18, which to this day I count as one of my more idiotic blunders😡. Since then I have vowed never to sell, not sure it will last but for now I haven't sold for years.
