The secondary hardening response observed in many high-speed steel alloys is due to the precipitation of fine alloy carbides during tempering. In order to accomplish this precipitation process, the alloying elements must be dissolved back into the austenite during the austenitization step. This is one of the reasons why very high austenitizing temperatures are required for these particular grades of steel (M4 is a good example). They are needed to dissolve the Mo-W-V alloy carbides back into solution.
