Are You Experienced? --- 2015 Seattle Knife Show

The Alaskans represented with some excellent tomahawk throwing skill. Mark Knapp in particular owned the target, big time. Eric Fritz and Mrs. Knapp are in the background, cheering Mark on.

Adam Desrosiers is pretty handy with a hawk. His nonchalant style and good form contrasted sharply with my more spazmodic approach :)

Not just 'Tomahawks Under the Turnpike'! Dan Keffler's Super Assassin suffered a substandard heat treatment, which left us with a $4K sword to throw! Dan had way better luck than I did. Or maybe it's skill. Whatever

Evan was the first to stick the Super Assassin, and was pretty damn handy with those hawks, too. I wish I'd taken some pictures of the bucket of hawks, it was quite the assortment of orphaned ball pein hammers, rasp hawks and roofing hatchets. I don't think there was an actual competition, but maybe next year I can help out by taking the load off Dave and helping organize the throwing competition.

Lorien, thanks for posting up the photos. Even though I was there I missed out on a lot of this. Excited to see more.

Hello Lorien!

Can't wait for your show report, my friend! Last year's outing is still my favourite show report ever and I expect this to be no less of a ride! ;) Next best thing to actually being there!

All the best,
Alex

Alex- This one's for you, buddy!

As if I didn't already regret missing the pre-funk enough! :D

Hello!

As great and fun to watch as I had hoped for! :) Love your coverage, Lorien! Seems like everyone was having loads of fun and a great time all around. I did look through last year's thread again before you uploaded the images here and I would not have recognized Salem at first glance...

Looking forward to what's still to come!

All the best,
Alex

PS: Lorien, you and Dan are killing me big-time.... ;) :)

Lorien thank you so much for doing this.

the guy in the green vest forging with Salem is Chuck Richards.

It's truly my pleasure, Bill.

I thought that was Chuck, but it seems when I'm not sure and try to guess, I crash and burn. Like, every time. I'm so bad when it comes to remembering names.

Thanks Lorien, you are both right. My bladeforums handle is AC Richards. My legal name is Alvin C. I go by Chuck. So either way, so long as I get to eat I'm good to go.

There were a great many highlights of the show for me, but none shone brighter than my initial meetup with Bruce Bingenheimer.

Bing and I worked together to develop a pattern that I drew up for him. We called it 'Bingalor', and we put together a WiP here

It was a good success for both of us, and from what I understand, Bing's gotten a fair number of orders for it. And so we started working on a new pattern, which came to be known as 'Icarus', (see original thread here).

Bing had mentioned he'd be bringing the Icarus prototype to the Seattle show, and I was really excited to actually see it. I've drawn up dozens of folder patterns, and this one would be the first I'd get a chance to check out physically.

Below is a photo of designer and maker, holding our collaboratively made piece;

In this photo, Bing had just informed me that he intended to give me this knife. I'm like, 'No way!' That is a look of happy incredulity on my face...

Another Jason Knight photobomb! Thanks for ruining the moment, buddy! Just kidding- Jason's presence always enhances a good time :)

I'm pretty sure I made a dirty joke. Always a safe bet. Especially when I'm trying to choke back tears of joy. Seriously, there was a lump in my throat when I found out what was happening. Bing's buddy, Jeremy, took a sequence of photos of the moment, which was pretty funny. Feel free to post em up:thumbup:

Thank you SO MUCH, Bing! I love you, man :)

My wife, daughter and me were travelling on a budget, which meant buying our food from grocery stores and the like. I used Icarus all weekend, cutting up and preparing food for my ladies. Of course, I had other knives that could do the job, but it just seemed right to use Icarus to nourish my family. There is a great depth of metaphorical material already attached to this particular knife, but one thing that can never be truly expressed through metaphor is friendship.

Bing- your friendship means a great deal to me. That is all :)

Great photos!

Looks like everyone had a superb time....hope to make it up there next year.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Wow, super cool about Bruce giving you the knife! It was a nice looking and working piece for sure. Bruce, both this year and last year, was one of the most strikingly friendly and genuine people I talked to.
I had a lot of good conversations over the weekend- mostly shoptalk of the indepth, nerdy variety. It was cool talking to Mike Q. and Bill F. on Sunday about eastern historical weapons, renaissance rapiers, and a bunch of other stuff. I never get to talk to folks that are so enthused about these things!
The amount of top-class kitchen knives at the show was nuts. The people that I expected to bring amazing cutlery did not disappoint, but I'd not seen Bhakti Sa's stuff before- very impressive work and a cool guy as well.
To say that Andrew Meer's art is inspiring is, at this point, almost cliche... the guy won maker's choice two years running and that is as it should be. Regardless, I stand fast by my choice of adjective there because I've been thinking about knives and art and where they meet since stopping by his table- and figuring out how to get where I want to go with my own work. If that's not the definition of inspiring, I don't know what is.
Dave Lisch's knife that won was super immaculate and technical. It really had a presence. As well, I'd like to thank him here for hosting that pre-funk, which is the true highlight of the show for me.

a LOT of people were missing Branson this year. Let's all make sure that Stuart makes it next year!

I had a fantastic time at the show and especially meeting so many great people and makers, including Lorien. And don't worry-I'm terrible with names, too ;). I got to have some great talks with Bing on the trip and knew what was coming in regards to Chiron (ETA: woops-this one was Icarus, not Chiron...) going to Lorien. So, I couldn't help but pull the phone out to capture the surprise. Here was Lorien handing the knife back to Bing after getting to play with it:

That's when the confusion started setting in for him-Bing told him the knife was his.

And the reality begins to set in :)

It was really great to be a "fly on the wall" at the show. I only knew a few people going in to the weekend and it was such a pleasure to get to know many more. So many put up with all kinds of questions and were very gracious with their time. Bing, thanks so much for taking me along. Lorien, thanks for posting up the review and enjoy that knife (glad I got to fondle it before it went to its new home ;)).

Jeremy, thanks for posting your photos.
It was a pleasure to meet you, your enthusiasm was contagious :)

Great moment captured in that series of photos. Lorien's facial expressions tells the entire story.
