Are you satisfied with the gear you have??

Are you satisfied with the gear you have??

Yes.
That doesn't mean there isn't 17483546739 things I'd like to try, but I'm not underequipped.

I don't do the end of the world stuff. But for actual real-world events, I'm fairly well set. There's no such thing as being set to live alone indefinitely.

Gear-wise, I'm pretty solid. I do want a higher loft down jacket, but it's not absolutley needed. I'd really like to learn more about gathering edible plants and actually give snaring a real go.

Well I have about 25 ducks and about 15 roosters that I need to put in the freezer this winter. I have laying hens, milk goats, woods full of deer a gas well I get gas from on my place, backup gas run lights and refrigerators, city water and a dug and drilled well and 85 acres of woods with various edibles. So I feel pretty good there.

My biggest want is more time at home so I can practice self sufficiency but I know how to can stuff, dry stuff butcher animals, process home produce etc.

The one thing I would like to have is a tractor so I can bale my own hay and also a PTO driven sorghum mill and wood splitter so I could sell molasses and firewood to the suburbs that my place sets on the edge of:thumbup:

You just made me jealous. My wife and I would like to move our family out to a more rural area and do exactly what you are doing, but with the housing market and the nature of my job, it is a bit difficult to live away from the city.

In regards to being prepared- I have no freakin clue. I have lived all over the place, from the Darien Jungle to downtown Denver, CO to St. Louis, MO. There are always more things that I would like- such as an AK and a grain mill - but I think I could make do with what I have.

I'd love more stuff, but in terms of what I 'need', I think i'm ok.

My skill level is much higher than my gear level. I did just get my first 3 Mora's though :D. Have to hold me over until I can get me a Koyote. Planning a primitive campout in two weekends. Go stay on the grandparents land for the weekend and rough it. Something I've tried to do every few months for the last few years. I'd love to have some ultralight gear and some nicer tech that some of you have. This place is wonderful for looking at things I wish I had, but when it comes down to what I "need", I do pretty darn good with what I have. Never had a problem with my shotgun, my stainless full-tang mall ninja hunting knife, a compass, poncho, lighter, water bottle and cup (now a stainless, seamless coffee can from some post I saw). Sometimes I think that a lot of this tech is just fluff. What my grandfather didn't teach me, I learned making my Eagle. The rest has come from practice.

So am I satisfied with the gear I have for myself...no, I want a Koyote knife . I have no problems going out for up to a week with my kit, done it plenty.

Am I satisfied with the gear I have to take care of my son in case of an emergency...no. A resounding no. Not in the wild. I don't have near what I would need to take care of my son in the wild in a survival situation. I have plenty for home survival and planned routes to get out and a packed trunk etc etc in a shtf scenario, but I had to dump the car and hoof it with Connor and Heather, I'm seriously lacking.

How do you take care of a 4 year old out in the woods? It must be in that manual I was supposed to get when the stork dropped him off ?

He can take care of the camp fire. Loves getting firewood. Knows how to watch for snakes and bugs. Knows how to help me set up a poncho-tent. Not sure what else I can show him now that would stick, though he's learning knife safety with his carved pine Mora

It was a priority to my wife and I that we have land. We sort of chose our degrees jobs and everything else so we could do it. We could make probably 2 or 3 times the money doing the exact same jobs (we both work for the gov't) somewhere else, but we wanted to be here because land was more affordable.

I could always learn more. I am really trying hard with wild edibles.

Gear I am pretty straight, but Fire arms I am lacking.

Gonna have to work on that.

I have plenty of camping and outdoor gear that has been upgraded gradually over time to stuff of decent quality.

My shortcoming, gearwise, is firearms. I have a Ruger 10/22  and a cheap, POS, Ram Line .22 pistol.:thumbdn: :barf:

I would like to add a shotgun and .357/.38 revolver to have a relatively inexpensive, practical, well-rounded arsenal.

-I want a savage in 30-06
-primitive fire
-traps and snares
-first aid
-get in shape again
-finally put together my mini kits, fire, first aid, food getting, sort all my kit up and store away all the excess. Gotta get organized!
-stock up more food and stuff, started that one just today, it felt good to shop around and buy a bunch of canned goods for a rainy day.

Satisfied with my gear, absolutely. There is not very much more stuff I wish I had.

I could definitely use more practice snaring animals, though. I am pretty good at making the traps and snares and tools, but I haven't spent much time actually using them to get food!

But other than that I feel quite well equipped for the wilderness. Of course it happens that I hate cooking, so when I am out, I don't try to snare anything because I don't want to have to cook it afterwards!
