Are you taken in by "overbuilt" marketing?

Ugh I get what your saying but trying to remove personal taste and or style and label it fashion isn't exactly honest. A Casio may tell time just fine but man its huge and ugly.

The bottom line is different strokes for different folks.

Everyone has their different tastes in knives. Its just funny how some people get soo upset at people who like crusader forge or medford knives. I mean whether or not something is practical for edc or cutting tasks is subjective. No one has the right to say "oh thats totally not necessary when it comes to anything you buy". Its all about what you like. If you want to buy an overbuilt tank folder and thats what you like and it makes you happy screw what anyone thinks buy it. Remember everyone is entitled to their opinion and its just that "their opinion". You don't have to justify anything you buy to anyone. Why should anyone judge me for what I like? I could argue the same exact thing for people who like light gentleman carry type knives. If you like overbuilt buy it.

Yes basically buy what you want but this overbuilt trend goes full circle where these hardcore extreme hammer knife buyers criticize knives geared for what knives are supposed to do as weak, insufficient... See where Im getting at? Also, the knife makers listen and have to cater to them with grinds thicker than a hull of an icebreaker and impressive slabs of titanium with a paper thin framelock cutout anyway. Instead makers can focus on cutting tools. How about that? In the end yes, please get what you want but it Ive read a lot of ignorant crap about how nice slicer/cutting knives that arent uberbuilt are weak and lacking.

Lol I must be one of the "stupid people" then since I like crusader forge, medford and Dalibor knives. I said "upset" to put it mildly, but my point has been made. Let me rephrase it and instead of "upset" to "pissed".

OVERBUILT is a FAD.
It will soon pass.

Hi guys,

It's difficult for me to tell which replies might be to me or not without direct quotes in the replies... for some reason I don't get email updates even on threads I create. But anyways, I think people are getting a little too aggressive in their zeal to denounce overbuilt knives (far be it from me to tell you how to express yourselves, however).

Let me just say that my thread title "taken in by" was a poor choice of words. By taken in I didn't mean to imply whether anyone was fooled, duped, tricked, or so dumb that the overbuilt marketing hype parted them from their money, and I hope for my part, posters on this thread know that isn't what I meant. I was just trying to think of a title and hopefully as my OP suggests, I really just wonder if marketing has turned you onto an overbuilt knife or even turned you off of one you might otherwise buy.

A lot of marketing for these knives (and many other types) rests in a form of hyperbole of which I know everyone here is aware. So if any of the non-quoted replies were for me, I hope I haven't offended anyone's sensitivities here. I own a few overbuilt folders myself, not too embarrassed to admit. They aren't always my primary users, but I like them just the same.

Are you guys kidding me? WTF? if you don't like it don't buy it!
I think slippies are pieces of crap but you'd never catch me starting a thread about my feelings about them.
And if an 8oz knife is too heavy for you to carry around than you need to put some weight on because you are too lite in the ass.

This thread wasn't really started (I'm the author) to vent any personal feelings about overbuilt knives. I just wanted some thoughts on the marketing which often seems to involve great hyperbole. As I say above, I have a few of these types of knives myself. Some have chosen to use it that way (venting) and although it's kinda getting out of hand, there's nothing inherently wrong with venting, within reason.

All sorts of people won't buy knives under $30 that I consider wonderful workhorses that are cheap and let me own more of them. I love a good bargain knife. It's actually my favorite type. But lots of people prefer the higher quality. Again, within reason, it's okay to say so.

Are you guys kidding me? WTF? if you don't like it don't buy it!

Over built folders are much safer than proper folders. It is harder to cut oneself. Many people choose to pay a premium for this very tangible safety factor.

Is this a knife discussion or a rant on personal taste?
Whine & Cheese doesn't need it, either.
