I couldn't agree more. Everyone got scared of thick handles all of the sudden. That's the number one question I get asked when selling a blade. Not how much has it been used, has it been abused etc. It's "how thick is the handle?"

I second this!!! Thin handles may look good, but are hard to work with. Thicker handles.....PLEASE!!!!

Martin

I'm gonna agree with this too. So far, all of the FBs I really like are the older models when Andy still made them with handles that would fill your hand. My newer Bushfinger isn't anything like my old one, it's much, much thinner and taller. I hope it's just a fad and all the knives don't stay this way.....

Thank you schmittie. That is my experience too.

Just picked up an early circa 2011 Fiddleback and I couldn't agree more......the handle fills the hand much better than current production knives the exception being the Bear Paw. Hopefully this will be a call out to Andy & Ken to offer fuller handles on some of the more popular models from time to time so we have options.

Hear! Hear!

One sweet Arête you have there! ;)

I feel very privileged to have this custom knife from Andy and custom sheath from Talfuchre. Andy made the knife specially for me and Talfuchre offered to complete the package by making a custom sheath to match the knife which is does perfectly. It is an awesome package from two incredibly talented individuals! The knife and the sheath speak to me of heirloom quality and will be passed on to my sons. So in reflection, I offer another heart felt thank you to Andy and Talfuchre for such a package! :)

No harm, no foul. My skin is thick, but I didn't even perceive a slight. Thanks for your consideration, though. And thanks for ALL your wonderful pics (especially the comparison threads) on this forum.

Michael

Thank you Michael. :)

This is one of the major reasons I picked up the Bear Paw. It being like a large Kephart and XL Wasp helped too.

I know I am in the minority but I love the thinner handles. These are the first, and only knives that I have picked up and had them fit me properly. I know that I am new around here but I already have around 12 of Andy's knives because of the way they fit in my hand.

Some beautiful Aretes in here englishrob, S4E, maw!

I think you guys know how I feel about thick handles.

Here are some Arete pics from the last year+ of having mine. It's 1/8" scandi, OD Green over white and natural (one of my favorite handle combinations ever). The Arete is one of my favorites due to it's very comfortable handle. The rounded butt means my big hands can overlap the end without discomfort.

Thank you Thurin! The handle combo on your Arete is one of my favorites. It really does the eyeballs well! Good show. :)

.....................uh.................I still want that Arête Nate..............just saying.......

:)

Mine. I'm not nearly as talented as many of the pro's who frequent this place...but I really like how that sheath came out. I made all kinds of attachments for it so I can add a firesteel, carry it in all different ways....

Man, that is some serious quality work!

Thanks man. Is appreciated. I find that the handle of the Arete to be really comfortable. Mine is full tang, and sits really well in the palm for me. Mine has a Heber leather jacket, in an antique brown (great aroma and a great combo). Am sure you guys have heard of Ray Mears, and it was mentioned to me that the Arete has a "Woodlore" look to it, which I think it has. I have never handled a Ray Mears/Alan Wood knife so cannot comment on actual feel of tht knife against the Arete. Perhaps others in the forum could add their thoughts here? What I do know is that the Arete, for me is a great looker, and should certainly be on your "to do list" if you havent had the opportunity to experience its delights.

I have a woodlore and it's a VERY different handle. I will say though that the blade profile is similar. The woodlore comes to a pretty aggressive point. The arete does as well. In all honesty, I prefer the arete handle over the 'coke-bottle' handle of the woodlore.

Would be great to see a photo comparison of the two if you can. Thanks.

A basket of Arete goodness including Super Ben's knife #1 in Box Elder Burl and a recent addition sporting double micarta bolsters with Cocobolo. The handle on the Bocote knife is noticeably fuller due to the 1/8" thickness of the micarta liner. A perfect example of how Andy offers different expressions of the same model.

Stunningly beautiful knives Peter! That Bocote with double bolsters really looks good to me. I like the cork background for the photos. Awesome.

Phil

Hey Phil.....appreciate your comments.....trying out different backgrounds to see what works. Your insights have been quite helpful.

I am grateful to have both knives in my collection of Fiddlebacks :)

Kosta Browne yummy. I'm still waiting to crack my 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot, but that's a different forum.
