ARK Neck Knife

I'm more drawn to the clipped bowie. Piercing ease rather than toughness would make sense to me as the grip wouldn't work for me to use with lots of force. The design might keep the fingers off the blade but it's still too small to get a big grip on so that ease of penetration would help.
yeah, what he said - especially for the intended purpose, pointy pointy is the way to go

Okay, I've had a chance to try some cutting on full water bottles and let my new female petty officer play with the ARK, as well.

She has no experience with using knives defensively. She said the ARK "felt very nice" and "had a good grip".

Cutting with the ARK is...unique. If you've done a lot of live cutting, typically just the last few inches of blade makes contact. When I cut at the bottles, it was easy to miss, since I've done so much cutting with longer blades. (This will be less an issue if you're cutting an arm that's holding you!) I think those of us who have done a lot of cutting will have to think about striking the target with our knuckles to get the right distancing, while making cuts will actually be easier for those who haven't done any knife training! Thrusts, on the other hand, are effortless. :D That little clip slips right in.

On slashes and on thrusts, the grip is absolutely secure. Wet hands didn't affect the grip. Even my inexperienced, 50ish female E5 automatically grabbed the little knife in a saber grip. "Your thumb just goes right there," she said.

Sal, that is high praise. Thank you!

They'll be on their way tomorrow!

Hi Sam, John,

Just got back from another marathon trip. Still sorting jet-lag.

Those look great. We'd like to purchase one of each.

We're going to make a short run of the Swick 3 (with the ring). We are aware that many might not like the ring for a variety of reasons, and your solution without the ring is qute elegant. Good job. Looking forward to receiving them.

I would love to see the micro-bowie available in H1, serrated if possible. A nice hollow saber gind would look absolutely awesome and retain strength through the blade til the tip. Maybe sort of machined texturing along the handle (An extra production step, I know) would help alleviate the need to wrap it. Not sure how irritating rubberized handles would be on a neck knife. The possibility of a glass break would interest me as well, but on such a small knife I don't really see the point, and it wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing. Very interested to see where this goes.

Well, I've discussed with Sam a way that might let us drop the weight to about what I think it should be, while still keeping the nice solid grip the ARK already has. :)

One of the German Federal Police here spent 15 minutes last night playing with the ARK, and talking about how dangerous it could be. Instead of the saber grip, he held the little knife with his thumb pressed against the flat of the blade, with barely more than the edge protruding past his fingers. It was completely invisible in dim light.

Spyderco has let us know they have received the ARK protos, and will let as many knife nuts play with them as possible.

Anyone get a chance to play with these at BLADE? Thoughts?

John

So that was what that prototype was. I saw one one the upper shelf, far left side of the prototype display. It looked good, but I didn't handle it.

"Looks good" is a start, thanks. :)

Yeah, sorry I was too focused on bugging Sal about the Starmate and Lum fixed blades. For what its worth, I like the first version of your prototype......looks like it would be a handy little utility/ small game blade. I wouldn't mind seeing some jimping added to the blade hole hump and on the tip like the Jester.

To briefly recap, on this deployment, I became aware that sexual assault is a major risk in theater. One especially dangerous situation is when service members go to the showers, since they do not take their weapons with them, the showers are communal, and the shower visits will often happen at night. A small, easily carried knife that can even be carried in the shower would give an option to those members.

can someone explain to me what "theater" is?

Not to dump on the thread, because I think this is a cool idea (BTW, Sam, I left you a visitor message re this), but I wonder if the Boker Vox Rhino Calf might stifle the ARK the way the SubComs stifled the Lava.

That Boker one is much smaller isn't it? It has like a one and a half finger handle. The grip on the ARK should be much better. Two different animals.

Well, the Vox Rhino Calf is a trim 1 oz, and rust-resistant 440C. The ARK handle, though- if any of you played with it- is surprisingly good for such a little knife. The Vox looks like a neat little blade, but I don't see that the two will necessarily compete that much.
