ARKANSAS and DANBO!

Darby--you mentioned you wanted to learn about digital photography. Take a look at the photography thread started by "Boink" in Gallery. Hopefully some of the info there will be of value.

Hey Darby,

Just for the record, I liked that Fisk shirt! I wish I had known it was you from the forums - I would have made a point of coming over to say hi. Glad you enjoyed the show - I know I sure did.

All the best,

Roger

Murray, thanks for the info. It looks like Roger could teach me and how to write too!

Roger, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! I asked Danbo who you were yesterday. Next year....

Sammy, same here.

Roger, did you get any pics of John Perry's knives. That guy is sooooooooooooooooo GOOD! Clean as Massey, Walker, etc.

Hey Darby,

I did get one pic of John Perry's work - unfortunateley, it's a bit blurry, out-of-focus and out-of-whack exposure-wise.

But here it is anyway:

I absolutely agree with your assessment of his knives, and this particular one was among the very nicest at the show. Great stag, super fit and finish, great feel. I found it really hard not to buy that knife (though running out of dough will tend to simplify these decisions:) )

All the best,

Roger

As Roger and Darby and a few others have noted, this was an awesome show! I will post my pics later tonight hopefully, and will try to condense my report here.

Friday afternoon, arrived in Little Rock and checked into the hotel(not the hotel that the show was at though), and had a little dinner with the Wife. Then, I went over to the Double Tree Hotel to see what was happening. Met Roger P. in the lobby and we were greeted by Jerry Fisk, Don Hanson III, Maurice and others. Jim Cook was just checking in, as was Paul Basch. Al Dippold and a few others were seated in the lounge, pickling their livers. ;)

After exchanging niceties with several makers, Roger P. and I went and had our little private knife show. Judging from Roger's dropped jaw, I would say that he liked some of my knives. :)

Friday night, I could not sleep, as I felt like a little kid on Christmas eve. Got to the show a half hour early, and was one of the first people in the door. Immediately, I was looking directly at Jerry Fisk's awesome bowie! It don't get much better than that! Behind him was Jim Cook, and to the left was Ron Newton. Jerry Fisk was already sold out(no surprise), and most of my money was already tied up with ordered knives. The Massey "S" guard, the Newton pearl inlayed hunter, and a new ebony handled Russ Andrews bowie left me with little to play with. I did, however, manage to pick up a sweet little forged 1084 clip point utility knife from Bailey Bradshaw with super nice matching stag slabs on a full tapered tang(tapered to almost nothing at the butt end!). Promptly put that one on my belt, where it stayed for the entire show. Sort of my little way of testing a potential carry knife is to see how well it is forgotten on your belt until you need it. This one passed with flying colors, as I literally forgot it was there until I wanted to show it to someone.

I was having so much fun at the show Saturday, that I didnt even leave for lunch! By the time I left Saturday, I was beat down from standing around on concrete all day, and famished. A nice dinner at the Macaroni Grill with the Wife, Roger P. and Russ Andrews, and a giant Latte at a local Starbucks, and I was back to semi-normal.

Sunday, I was almost as excited as Saturday, as I knew a maker/friend would be there set up on Sunday. I ended up getting 3 knives from this man, and wish I could have committed to more. The maker's name is Tom Krein. He is a very talented maker who worked for A.G. Russell(making the Morseth knives and others), and also worked for Bob Dozier. Tom showed up with a table full of awesome knives. Picture something similar to Bob Dozier's knives, only with a much finer grit finish. Blades were D2 and A2(both with Dozier heat treat). Grinds were as perfect as a human can get. Again, I will try to post pics later tonight. I missed a chance at a really sweet Michael Connor camp bowie(but, I couldnt afford it anyway) ;) Darby is a real hoot to be around!
Aside from placing an order or three, and buying some grinding belts for my own little knifemaking projects, my Sunday was spent running around and shooting the breeze with big name knifemakers and taking a few pics. I cannot wait for next year's show!

A pic of a few of Tom Krein's knives.

Edited, because I needed this pic elsewhere.

Guys I can testify that this one is even sweeter than it looks in the pic. I liked it so much that I ordered a copy with an oval guard. I predict that this maker will be making a name for himself. :D Racer Roy

KNOWLEDGE THAT IS NOT SHARED IS LOST.

got to hang out with paul and amy and met a bunch of people. of course i met up with danbo, fisk, raker, tom krein, and others, but also met a ton of new people. jerry schroeder, jim magee, tim foster, pete peterson, larry harley (crazy ole bastid ;) ), wes crawford, bob neal, don hanson,al dippold, hank knickmeyer, mark from knife world (sorry i cant remember your last name mark) and too many more to mention.

the show itself was exhausting. been home for more than 24 hours and am still exhausted. amy had me take a bunch of pic's so maybe she can get them posted for all to enjoy....just be sure not to look at the one of me and paul too long or youll go blind.

wishing someone would post danbo's ugly mug,
maurice

BAD DANBO!!!!!
Never, never pass on a mike conner.

I also think John Perry makes great knives. He has taught me the meaning of precision. He thinks in .001's. He has been very helpful to me and my knifemaking. I owe him big time.

MAURICE, don't you know that the forum has rules about posting obscene things? A picture of Danbo certainly falls in that category. That's how he gets all of those sweet blades from makers who have waiting lists that are years long. They can't stand looking at him any longer so they give him a knife hoping that he will go away.
P.S. If you ever meet him in person don't look him in the face or you will turn into stone. The only people that are safe are from Arkansas. Nothing scares them. ;) Racer Roy

Ayukyukyuk! :p

Hey Roy, whatever works! :)

Dan, there really wasn't much chance for me to actually pick up that Connor knife. It would have taken every penny I had(and then some), and it ended up being traded away anyway. I did get to fondle it a few times though.

You guys sound like you had a great time. Why are all the shows I want to go to over 2,000 miles from where I live?

That knife by John Perry is a beauty.

brings a tear to my eye reading this and knowing i missed out on another great Arkansas Show! Had a table ready and everything, but my son was in hospitalized thursday afternoon:(

I will be there next year, even if i have to just "spectate".

Yeah Matt, I was wondering where you where. Hope that boy is allright. See you in Atlanta, if not sooner.

i'll be at Batsons (performance testing for JS), then the Gulf Coast show we have here in MS, then Atlanta to sit for my JS.... FINALLY:D

Hey Matt,See you at Batsons..Good Luck.
I am also going to be at Blade to get my JS Judging done.
Bruce

Sounds like you guys had an incredible time..., very cool.., and thanks for some nice pictures...

"Hunters seek what they [WANT].., Seekers hunt what they [NEED]"

yeah i know about the rules... ;)
and actually me and danbo have met several times (little rock, tulsa and atlanta) but we both wear sunglasses so as to not go blind from each others ugliness. :p

STILL WAITING on amy to post those pics ;) :p

I would like to apologize for not including J.W Randall in the awards list.

J.W.Randall won "Best Damascus" for a bowie with beautiful mop inlays. J.W. is a talented maker and a stand-up guy. My oversite was simply that; an oversite. I edited this for mis-information.

Do any of you have a picture of the knife?
