Arkansas Custom Knife Show

Yep, mammoth ivory inlay in ebony with rattle snake scrim. Thanks for the look. Used mokume pin covers on the blue ivory hunter too. John

...and Rodrigo is just about to leapfrog right over JS to MS. Wow!

Two more from Ron Newton. The first is an intriguing piece - something different from Ron - an affordable field-grade utilty/hunter. As Ron describes:

" Belt satin finish, takedown stag slabs and a rope biting steel I've been experimenting with that I call Newt's Wootz. Thousands of carbides are brought to the steel surface that allows for continuous rope cutting by using a nontraditional heat treating method. I cut for 2 hours with this blade already slicing 5/8" sisal rope. After 500 slices I had to strop the blade on my blue jeans and the edge came back."

Next a really beautiful amber stag hunter with a 4" L6 blade and nickel silver fittings:

My last piece for the show. A prototype hunter that I have been playing around with. Steel is 1075 and the handle is blackwood. Blade length is 5" with the OAL at 10".

Thanks,
Brett

Brett, I think I would have to see that knife in person. I'm don't think I care for the guard. I'm sure it works just fine though.

Keith, my first thought also, I like everything else about the knife, especially the handle...so, Brett tell about the design of the guard. Thanks Preston

Keith,
The knife is 1 3/8 wide, wider than my usual hunter. I beefed up the handle considerably and my usual proportioned guard looked wimpy, so I experimented with a longer one. I have handled some of Clyde Fischer's knives and quickly appreciated the long guards. The photo does seem to skew it a bit from what I can tell. I appreciate your input on the design.

Okay, some of you bastids who were lucky enough to get to the show chime in and tell us not-so-lucky bastids all about it. :) Who won awards? Pics would be nice, too. :D I don't ask for much...

Saturday sales seemed strong from the makers that I talked to. Most anticipated that Sunday would be slow due to the Super Bowl, but that was not the case. Several makers were sold out by noon saturday.

Some awards received were J.W. Randall's best damascus and best of show, IIRC. Ron Newton garnered best art knife and another I can't recall. Uncle Al Lawrence won the Arkansas Knifemaker's Association award for his generous and unassuming nature of going above and beyond in promoting knifemaking. Uncle Al is always more than ready to donate items, time, and his equipment to any knifemaking cause. Also, Don McIntosh won the AG Russell best value award. He is from Texarkana and will probably be seen around in the future.

That's all I have time to post right now but hopefully someone more organized than I am can fill in the blanks.

This is a better pictuer of the folder I carried.I had a good show and a great time. I slept through the judging they had it early but I think that is good.I looked at most of the winning knives and they were outstanding.

Best Use Of Giraffe Bone: J.R. Cook
Huh? The red-headed stepchild of knife handles. It needs it's own category to get acclaim. :barf:

There is something mysterious about it that simply defies logic. You can sing the praises all day long, but just try to sell one.....

(That said, I congratulate Mr. Cook. I will tip my hat to the award-winner. )

I have seen some giraffe bone that looks surprisingly good, but for the most part I don't care for it at all. It's not cheap either.

Chuck Ward took the picture. When I said it was good that they had the judging early and that I had slept late and that was good I didn't mean I didn't want to enter only you can have the knives back on your table when the show opens.
