Arrogance mistaken for competence

That's the risk anyone takes when they study under someone, for some folks it becomes blind faith which is not what a good instructor would want...mere automatons.

You can usually see right away from the students whether or not the master is a good instructor or not.

An instructor that teaches you his system and an instructor that teaches you to teach yourself. Then again, there are some that are there to learn the "system" and recieve that piece of paper. I suspect though, that many will not admit so.

This is a great thought. It is one thing that leads me to continue to practice FMA, and 'the flow'. I believe that as you practice the basics and what you've learned, more is revealed to you.

My other comment is related to footwork. Of all the 'styles' I've studied, my first instructor who emphasized moving and sliding and pivoting and good stances has served me very well. Although I may not be the best 'fighter' there is, I can generally keep others from engaging me if I desire to escape and evade. This 'skill' seems to be natural, now, and the only part I continue to work on, is an "active evade", where I'm in a good, in-range position to deliver a valid 'reply', should that be appropriate. If you're not in good position, relative to the opponent with good footwork and balance, and timing, all the devastating kicks, punches, throws and grapples in the world will not work.
