I hit the scales at 264 lbs the last week of January, I was shocked and resolved to do something about it. This morning the scale smiled 214 lbs at me.

That means I can carry more guns and knives :) The full blown physical came back perfect, the Doctors couldn't believe I was on no medication. I'll be 57 in a couple of months and retired at 59. I'm determined to get down to 185 lbs. and stay there.

In a week and a half I'm meeting up with some friends in northern Tenn. for a week of camping and hunting. I wanted to be in better shape for this hunt and have been working towards that as a goal. I feel pretty good and am excited about a week in the forest with friends, guns and whitetail. Not to mention I want to look good in a kilt again :)

A huge congrats! That's great, and I'm sure it feels great. Not a single thing you can do for your health better than exercise and diet.

Now go buy yourself a new sharp toy. :)

Congratulations!! Any secrets or tips for us other "full figured" outdoorsmen?

Congrats man! Thats teriffic.

Heres to your health!!!

Kinda crazy when you pick up 50lbs and realize thats what you were packin around with ya.

People always get in a tiff about the weight of their gear, when the quickest way to shed the weight is by eating smart and excersize. Kinda silly when people complain about ounces of a pack, when their packin 50 extra pounds on the gut.:D

Im with Will....

Something sharp is in order.

Congratulations!

Was it diet and exercise? - or one of those "miracle" pills as shown on late night TV? ;)

That's awesome!! Congrats!

I need to do something like this myself but it seems something always comes up

Actually when I was near this mile stone a few weeks ago I bought myself a Blaser R93 Professional in .270 win. along with a used Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10 X 50mm scope. I know a little over board but I had the cash.

Sure, I knew going into it that if I let myself get hungry my resolve and will power would weaken, I cut my portions in half, I wasn't full when I finished my meal but I knew that in 10 to 15 minutes I would feel fine. This meant that I had to eat three meals a day so I started eating oatmeal in the morning and occasionally a bowl of cereal. A light lunch and the same half portions for diner.

No junk or sugar stuff but I worked into this slowly, after I started loosing weight it was easier to continue to cut out the junk.

There where a couple times when I fell behind a scheduled meal but I was actively engaged in something and it was easy to take my mind off the pangs of hunger. I occasionally measured out a half cup of mixed nuts or made up another bowl of oatmeal if I got hungry between a meal.

No magic pills, but you knew that didn't you :)

Thanks for your encouragement.

Man ! You're on it !
I weighed 265 or so when I first moved down here
I don't eat white bread or flour and haven't had a soda in years. I have game meat but munch a whole lot more salad and green beans and beans and rice than ever before.
the meat is 4 or 5 ounces at a time.
I hold about 195 now and do 5 minutes of push ups every day....... about 85 on average.
NO. I'm 56. I do 40...then 15 and 10 and, with luck and teeth grittin attitude,, another 10.

Yeah, I don't know what weight I'll settle at. My wife was reading to me from her Weight Watchers book and it stated my range from 135 to 175 lbs, no freaking way. Used to be 6' but I've shrunk to 5' 11", the bones in my wrist are so wide I can't find a watch band that fits and have to make my own "o)

 Right on! You smoked right past me! (But I actually got back on the bike today for the first time in over a month!)

Hey Felix, it's a trail and sometimes we stop to to take in life, build a fire, putz around then back on coarse. :) At least that's how I'm looking at it.

I don't want to know about the kilt:D

The Blaser with that glass on it is one sweet set-up! I have the same glass and haven't found a rifle yet that I want to put it on yet.

Congrats and enjoy!

Congratulations, hushnel! Fifty Freaking Pounds! Good work.

I've been quietly trying to do the same thing. I started back in January by just watching what I ate and walking more. I went from 214 down to 183 (31 pounds), but I put six of it back on: now I'm working at getting that back off.

I'm in my mid sixties, and I'd been sedentary for quite awhile. I spent all day behind a computer getting no exercise at all. I'd had several heart attacks, so I should have been exercising more just because of that, but I didn't. Then it got to the point where I couldn't walk around the block without taking a break, so I knew it was time to do something about it. Now I'm up to a couple of miles a day, and can't wait to get out in the bush again. On a side note, I have two garbage knees — which didn't make it any easier — but by the time I could walk a mile, my knees started hurting less, too.

Like you, I want to lose even more weight. Keep at it, sir, keep at it.

Way to go Hushnel !! Keep on it. I bet you feel a lot better !

I'm 47, and I've lost 37 since Jan. this year. 242 down to 205. My goal is 170, so still a ways to go. Atkins is my lifestyle choice and it's working great.

Now I can actually see my belt buckle ( and my sheath knife) :D

Keep up the good work.

Pete.

Being left handed the Blaser is perfect, almost any caliber I need is just a barrel away and I won't have to search for a left handed rifle.

Hey dawsonbob, I'm with you brother, though my ticker is fine I've trashed my knees falling off a 6 story building, broke my neck in a car accident and broke my back hanging iron and I ain't even going to list motorcycle accidents and my wrists and ankles :)

Thanks Pete. Part of my motivation was finding this sub forum and remembering how much I love the wild places, it kind of forced me to realize my responsibility to approach it in the best shape I can. Reading about all these guys living life as it was meant to be and enjoying God's amazing creation was the greatest motivation imaginable.

Hopefully, my ticker will get better because of the exercise. As for the other stuff, you sound a lot like me; the things I haven't broken aren't worth mentioning. I had way too much fun when I was young, and now my body's reminding me of it all. During nine years in the Marine Corps I was injured a number of times, but when the knees went (on a jump) it ended my career. Still, life is just so much damn fun, and it will be even better after we lose more weight!

:) absolutely, Life is good.

My propensity to damage my person fell off dramatically 15 years ago when I stopped drinking alcohol and doing recreational drugs. I still thank and bless the cop who arrested me for DUI that last night of my old life.
