Atlanta Virtual Down this morning?

Mail is back for me, as is my site as of 3:06EST...

I can't explain the DNS thing, I've been out of IT work long enough that its a little fuzzy to me, I remember just enough to know that somewhere there is a technician trying his best not to beat the crap out of a server... ;)

Hopefully someone can explain it, it is actually quite interesting what is involved in making a website/mail sever work.

Sheesh.....glad i went the DIY route with .Mac:eek:

Near the end of day three.....still no working website or mail. Hope something comes around soon, this is getting aggravating. You never know just how much you depend on the internet until its not working!

maybe any minute now it will all come back up...get ready to swap some spam...who want's my Viagra emails?

Knifenetwork still down on my computer, so much for the 5 o'clock est reset.:grumpy:

who want's my Viagra emails?
Viagra? Is that the same as "Viagra Falls" ? Aren't those some kind of waterfalls around New York and Canadie? Seems like that movie star "Merlin Munrow" made a movie about those darned waterfalls. I might be interested if they have some good deals on motels.

You might as well "grin", cause it ain't gonna get no better till the fat lady sings.

just got off the phone with Alex. There are approx 250 AV sites left still down (naturally, both of mine are in this). Those he has managed to get up so far has been a manual process and he is working on those that are still down. Many had to be issued new IP addresses and from I know about that is it may take a couple days for those addresses to completely populate the net.
He still does not have his full bandwidth and his servers are still showing the wrong date but they haven't had a chance to fix that yet. He estimates there are 100,000 web sites down as his ISP is not the only one affected by what ever happened. He says he hopes to have the remaining ones up in the next few hours but wasn't too thrilled about saying even that since he has missed it a couple times already. He told me he would stay with it until all are up and running then when the dust settled he would tell every one in more detail what happened. He has been there 57 hours straight so he is making the effort. At this point, no data has been lost or is threatened as being lost. Big, tough thing to learn for me in this whole deal is to keep a current data set back up in my house or at least off the provider ISP. I have my knife web site data here since I use a WYSIWIG editor and I can move that in a snap but my supplier web site data is entirely on AV servers and reconstructing that from scratch would take months. I guess I'll need to get a little more techy and figure out how to back that up for a quick switch if there is a disaster at AV that simply can't be recovered from.
Alex said to keep checking over the next several hours...and so it goes...

find a linux (or Mac command line) geek, have them run a program called curl and and mirror your site into a folder periodically?, say once every 6 months if you have live backups of your photos and content on your hard drive.

Downside: that CAN be a big bandwidth hit, though most sites are small enough that it's a few hundred MB max (less than downloading a CD image).

There are other ways, but sometimes KISS rules.

Also, I recommend getting a gmail account both as a backup email (how you work that depends on a lot of things) and as a backup system- everything you posty to your site you email yourself at your gmail account. it's there forever, and you have something like a 2.5GB space limit. (Standard internet disclaimer of privacy and security applies. gmail is as safe as anything else, if you don't want someone to see it, don't put it online)

Google docs can also be used for word-type document storage (and you can edit it from your phone these days)

Sounds like Alex is having some trouble, and I feel it- I've been through 3 day outages before and it sucks. If I knew the guy I'd probably be helping out.

This is coming right as I'm looking at making myself a website, too. I was going to ask for recommendations! If alex is answering the phone, and working on the issues, then he's probably on the ball.

good to know that stuff...I've been getting by fairly ignorant but now it's time to dig in and learn some of this. I think the gmail back up is smart, i'll set that up. I have 90 or so gmail accounts to use up.

Atlanta Virtual has been rock solid for years and guess that is why this is so painful. Alex eats data bits for lunch so he's always been dependable. He took 10 minutes to talk to me tonight when his world is melting down. This wasn't his fault, he just got kicked in the nuts with it. I'll stay with but I'll ask more questions and have a disaster plan going forward for things like this that are beyone one guys control.

I called and Alex called me right back. No service here, and it's 9:40pm, monday eve. He blames himself, but it's really out of his hands. Another company is doing the chngeover and they aren't as reliable as they forecasted.

More importantly is my employer from my other full-time job, the Norwalk River Rowing Association. I had our service changed to AV, and it's been perfect. But today, my boss was bangin' off the rev limiter, as they do a LOT of communication with parents and events with email. New Winter programs, fees, applications, etc. Ugghhh.

I hope I have a boxful of spam and emails by morning.... Only this time. ;)

I was wondering what was going on with TKN the last few days.

For the last 2 days I've been getting nothing from the site but, "Could not find server." Tonight I get the site to load and all I get is an out of date notice saying that the site should be back up as of the 3rd.

I miss TKN. Without it, my internet knife fix is sorely lacking.

mine are still down..If Alex hadn't put in a lot of good will and support with me up front, I would be calling for Atlanta Virtual's head right now - but there are limits. This needs to get resolved.

Tuesday morning, 6:10am in Montana....still no website. Part of me wants to jump up and down in anguish, and the other part of me thinks how reliable and helpful AV has been over the last 5+ years that I've been with them. As much as I admire Alex and his crew, Trace is right.... This NEEDS to get resolved! I hate to say it, but if things aren't resolved very soon, this is going to put a huge "black mark" upon AV. I can see it now, in years to come we'll be talking about "The great AV blackout of 07".

Yep...I felt it yesterday...the phone was pretty quiet all day. Mondays, usually are very hectic with phone calls.

On the bright side...I was in the shop nearly all day and got a lot of work done.
